2 Before the Lesson: IMPORTANT: Print the 4 box SQUILT sheet or the Draw What You Hear sheet. I will be teaching the children how to do these sheets in our lesson. Choose the sheet most appropriate for your child s ability - or print both and let them choose when the lesson time comes. Print the Eras of Music sheet from this packet. I will be referencing the Elements of Music Posters - it is not necessary to have these, but it might be helpful for your children as we work through our SQUILT sheet. Use your 20% MEMBERS discount. If your children are keeping a notebook, these are a wonderful reference tool! Are you using the listening calendar for January? Children will benefit from listening to Mozart all month long! Have you read a little about Mozart? There is a list of books on the SQUILT blog that is helpful. Include some in your read aloud time!
3 Le s son Objectives: 1. Learn about Mozart s Musical Joke - Mvmt. 4 - Presto. 2. Become familiar with the terms Dynamics, Rhythm, Tempo, Instrumentation, and Mood. Use appropriate music vocabulary to describe the music. 3. Recognize the joke in this music - identify ways Mozart was poking fun of other composers and how this piece actually looked forward to the Modern Era of music. 4. Lear n about the Classical Era and its characteristics. Review the 4 eras of music.
4 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( ) Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart WOLFIE We learned a lot about Mozart in the previous lesson. If you missed the lesson, you can reference that material in the SQUILT LIVE! member area. This week we want to emphasize that Mozart was solidly from the Classical Era - and we will talk about what that means. We are striving to give our children an overall context for Mozart s music in the grand scheme of music history! Characteristics of Classical Music a very hummable tune that sits nicely in the music - we refer to this as the MELODY. piano was used more, and more orchestra instruments were being developed the delicate order of the Baroque period is being taken over by more indulgence and passion - which will lead to the Romantic Era

6 Dynamics: Louds and softs in music Rhythm: Patterns of longs and shorts in music - how long the notes last Tempo: The speed of the beat Instrumentation: The instruments used in a piece Mood: How does the piece make you feel?
7 A Musical Joke (Presto) Dynamics: Children may hear a lot of echoes in this piece - which means lots of loud (forte) and soft (piano). Any other things they hear in relation to louds and softs is appropriate - we want them to think and express what they hear! Rhythm/Tempo: Let s talk about the Rhythm first: The rhythms in this piece are playful and very repetitive. Almost all of the rhythms move quickly and are quite lively. The Tempo of the piece is PRESTO which means fast! Children can draw or write in the box to express rhythm and tempo. Instrumentation: Mozart s instrumentation was one of the ways he made this a joke using the heavy French Horns on top of the light strings wasn t common practice in the Classical Era. In fact, it sounds clumsy. Children should identify brass (French Horn) and string instruments (Violin, Viola, Cello). Mood: Encourage your children to write adjectives to describe how the music makes them feel.
