1 THE EN CHAMADE Newsletter of the American Guild of Organists, Memphis Chapter October 2016 From the Dean: The monthly meeting in September at Grace-St. Luke s Episcopal was a great way to begin the year of the AGO- Memphis Chapter. Thanks to Wesley Emerson and Debbie Smith for hosting our dinner and program. It was a treat to hear the new antiphonal organ, played so beautifully by Debbie Smith and to hear from Wesley about the renovations to the worship space. No doubt the work that was done will indeed enhance the worship experience. Monday, October 2 is the date for our next meeting, which will be held at a slightly different time to accommodate the students from Colonial Middle School who will be attending. St. Brigid s Catholic church will host Pipes, Pedals and Pizza. Students will assemble at 4:00 to learn all about the pipe organ, have a chance to play the organ and ask questions of presenters Greg Koziel and Jim Walsmith. Members are encouraged to attend this session with the students. Following the demonstration and exploration, the students will eat a dinner of pizza. The AGO members will have their regular meal at 6:30 followed by a business meeting and fellowship. At the August Executive Committee meeting, there was much discussion about advertising our events more effectively. Look up AGO Memphis on Facebook and like us. Look for listing programs in the Commercial Appeal, Memphis Flyer, Go Memphis and others. Other ways to advertise is for you to personally send a copy of this newsletter to members of your church who like the pipe organ. In addition, in coming months, attractive, colorful flyers will be available for you to download and print for your choir/church family. We have great programs planned for the year. Please make a concerted effort to invite friends to our programs. Hope to see you in a few weeks at St. Brigid s. Waiting for cooler temps, Sincerely, Carolyn Mason 1

7 Enhancements Made to the Idlewild Organ Site of our January programs with Dr. Walter Hilse. For two weeks in August the Bedient Pipe Organ Company worked 10 hours a day, including weekends, to make repairs and enhancements to the Idlewild organ. The work included mending damaged pipes, cleaning, re-voicing and tuning. The results of the work include a greater singing quality and enhanced character to individual voices of the organ and a more unified ensemble of combined voices. Promptness of speech was also improved. During September, under the supervision of the Bedient Company, the Walker Digital Organ Company added three new voices to the organ. Soubasse 32, Montre 32, and Contre Trompette 32 were added to the pedal division and provide significant depth and cohesion to the ensemble of voices, particularly for the accompaniment of congregational song.
