2 BYU Hawaii Curriculum Proposal Number [16-27] Summary: Section 2 Overview (Support) The Music Department wishes to implement a minor in piano performance. Students will take introductory music theory (Music 111/L) to prepare for an advanced history or repertoire course (chosen from Music 385, 386, 464, or 465). Additionally, they will select one skillsbased course from introductory technique (Music 161) or keyboard harmony (Music 191 or Music 291). Three semesters of piano lessons (Music 160R/260R) are required. The minor overall may be completed within one calendar year. No new courses are needed as these have been taught for some time within the piano-performance major. As such, students will be accepted by audition to ensure sufficient background. With the potential advent of the new GE model, this allows non-music-major students the opportunity for university-level study as they prepare for future service in their communities and the church. The proposal also makes it possible for the music department to add another offering within the general education program. If the modular GE proposal does not advance then we hope to offer the piano-performance minor for elective credit. This new curriculum will not affect the course load of Scott McCarrey, but will require additional private teaching from the adjunct faculties, Stacy McCarrey and Jennifer Duerden.

These prerequisites will stay in place for music majors. Students in the piano performance minor will be allowed to register for the history and literature courses with Music 111/L and in 291 by audition. Catalogue statement: (placed directly underneath the Music Minor requirements listed below) Piano Performance Minor (15 hours) A minor in piano performance includes four hours of music theory, two hours of skills electives, three hours of music history or keyboard literature, and six hours of private lessons, taken over the course of three semesters. Entrance into this minor is by audition with the piano-area coordinator, Dr. Scott McCarrey (Auditorium 164). Introduction to Music Literature (3) (F, W, S) Designed to acquaint the student with concepts of form and style in music as exemplified in masterworks from the Middle Ages to the present World Music Cultures (3) (F, W, S) A survey of the musical traditions of selected representative world cultures: Oceania, East Asia, Indonesia, India, Africa, the Middle East and North America Music Fundamentals (3) (F, W, S) Students are introduced to the rudiments of western musical notation and are given foundational training in music theory and ear training. This course is designed for students with a limited background in music. Those interested in pursuing more advanced studies will be able to enroll in MUSC 111 and MUSC 111L after successful completion of this course. 105R. Group Performance Instruction (2) (S) Class instruction for beginners in voice, piano, and instrumental music. Special fee for piano and instrumental instruction. (Piano section only: music majors needing to pass piano proficiency will be given preference. Non music majors may contact instructor the first day of class.) Fee required. 110R. University Chorale (1-2) (F,W,S) Open to all students who desire an opportunity to participate in a singing organization. May be repeated up to four semesters for credit. Fee required Music Theory I (3) (F, W) A study of the essentials of music for beginning musicians. Three class sessions per week with two accompanying laboratory sessions. MUSC 111L is the lab portion of this class and must be taken concurrently. (Prerequisite: Pre-theory test.) 111L. Elementary Musicianship I (1) (F, W) Group instruction for music majors to provide basic musicianship skills for beginning theory, sight singing and ear training. This course is the lab portion of MUSC 111. (Prerequisite: Pre-theory test.) 112. Music Theory II (3) (W, S) An in-depth study of the harmonic techniques of the eighteenth century with emphasis on diatonic choral writing through the seventh chord. Class meets three days per week with a required laboratory session two days per week. MUSC 112L is the lab portion of this class and must be taken concurrently. (Prerequisite: MUSC 111 and MUSC 111L.)

8 112L. Elementary Musicianship II (1) (W, S) Group instruction for music majors to provide basic musicianship skills for beginning theory, sight singing and ear training. This course is the lab portion of MUSC R. Individual Instruction (1-2) (F, W, S) Private Instruction for non-music majors, or for music majors in World Music Studies track. Consists of twelve 1/2-hour lessons and may include Master class attendance. (Prerequisite: Instructor's consent.) Fee required. 160R. Individual Instruction (1-3) (F, W, S) Private instruction for freshman-level music majors. Consists of 12 one-hour lessons. The student participates in a recital and jury. Music History III: Music since 1900 (3) (S) The history of Western art music with emphasis on analysis and the interconnection of music with religion, philosophy and economics from 1900 to the present. (Prerequisites: MUSC 112 and 112L) 390R. Special Topics in Music (1-3) (Variable). 399R. Internship in Music (1-12) (F, W, S) Credit for applied experience in music. Prior approval must be obtained and coordinated by a faculty member and on-site supervisor Careers in Music (2) (Fall Even) Information on bridging the gap between graduation and securing a living as a musician. Focus on individualized career development, business skills including marketing, and career self-management. In addition, students will create a professional portfolio including a website, resume, and headshot. (Prerequisites: Music Major) 402. Seminar in Ethnomusicology (3) (Variable) Examines ethnomusicology as academic discipline. Survey of history, theory, and methodology. Relations between musicology, anthropology, folklore and cultural studies. (Prerequisite: MUSC 102) 430. Computer Music Technology (2) (Variable) A survey of current computer applications relating to the field of music. Includes a study of software relating to composition, performance, analysis, teaching and research. (Prerequisite: Pre-certification major) 460R. Individual Instruction (1-4) (F, W, S) Private instruction for senior-level music majors. Consists of 12 sixty-minute lessons. The student participates in a recital and jury. Instructor's
