2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement Ensemble Ibérica performs the music of Ibéria (Spain and Portugal) and the colonial Americas while educating the public about Iberian cultural influence. Programs explore diverse time periods, styles and locations including the Spanish baroque, Portuguese fado and Argentine tango. The Ensemble features extraordinary musicians from classical, jazz and folk traditions both locally and from around the world. Background Statement Founded in February of 2014 by Artistic Director Beau Bledsoe, a guitarist with a Master of Music from UMKC Conservatory of Music, Ensemble Ibérica is the culmination of his years studying and performing the music of Spain, Portugal, Mexico and Argentina.Ensemble Ibérica currently operates through volunteer efforts of our board and generous patrons from the Kansas City area. It is our goal to represent and serve the communities in Kansas City that are related to the international diaspora from the Iberian peninsula to the Latin Americas. We received tax exempt status from the IRS on June 11, Impact Statement Ensemble Ibérica has sold 6,739 individual tickets for our concert series, and over two thirds of our events have sold out. Ticket sales have increased 25% over the past two years. In addition to performances, the ensemble has produced three recordings.we have organized four successful cultural trips for patrons to Portugal and Spain every June. These trips have provided more than 40 patrons with a unique cultural experience. In 2018, the trip to Portugal, branded as Food, Fado, & Wine, focused on Fado music, a Portuguese urban folk music that grew out of the streets and taverns of Lisbon in the 19th Century. The Spain trip in 2017 was focused on Flamenco music and dance in the Andalusia region. Our educational outreach program was greatly expanded thanks to the work of our educational outreach coordinator and board member, rma Pacheco O'Neil. To date we've performed at 26 schools for over 4000 students. In addition to our "Introduction to Spain through Dance and Music" program, we've added "Mexico Lindo - an introduction to Mexico through Music, Song and Dance" featuring Ensemble Ibérica vocalist, Fedra Cooper Barrera. We co-produced the "Carnaval Room," a Latin music showcase room at the 2018 Folk Alliance International Conference where we were also selected as Official Showcase Artists. Our program Guitarras Flamenca has been invited to perform at The Wurzburg Flamenco Festival in Southern Germany April of 2019.Most recently we ve been awarded two performances at Open Spaces Kansas City in September Needs Statement The performing arts landscape in Kansas City is diverse, rich, and growing. However, there is a notable lack of Latino music and culture represented in the performing arts, despite the Kansas City area having a significant Latino population. Ensemble Ibérica is focused on sharing and celebrating Latino music traditions across genres, including classical, jazz, and folk. Our annual concert series is the main avenue for these performances, which include music from cultures that are underrepresented or non-existent in the Kansas City area. The series has presented traditional music from the Andean indigenous people of South American, prerevolution Cuban music from the 1950s and the Roma (gypsy) people from Spain, Turkey and Belgium. Ensemble Ibérica has set a public support goal of $14,000 for These funds will be used for administrative, venue and marketing costs in pursuit of our mission. These funds may also cover production, management, and administration for our 2018 Concert Series and Educational Outreach programs. Ticket revenue and other earned income will provide 85% of our total budget, and provides all funds needed for artist fees. 2

3 CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement For several years, I had been going to various performances by our artistic director Beau Bledsoe, and was impressed by his skills both as an instrumentalist and interpreter of a broad range of musical styles. My candid comments and suggestions about his performances led him to ask if I would serve on a group setting up Ensemble Iberica. My experience in the non-profit world made this a good fit, and it has been a fantastic journey. Each of our seasons has been more successful as we reach new audiences, bring in exciting outside performers, and develop our educational programs. Kansas City's music culture has been open to receiving and participating in our new venture. Like many fledging non-profits, we had limited financial resources, and organized first under the Group Exemption option under Folk Alliance International, allowing us to begin to collect tax deductible donations. Even though this structure is encouraged by the IRS, many foundations and donors are wary of it, and we finally invested the time and money into a full 501.c.3 incorporation. Making the public more aware of our existence without a large advertising budget continues to be a challenge but helpful media relations and free social media use continue to help us develop. Our Board is currently 5 members, with our artistic director, a restaurateur, a self-employed computer specialist, our education/outreach coordinator, and myself. All are volunteers. We enjoy the ease of working with a small board, but will be exploring expanding it to increase diversity and bring in additional skills and relationships. 4 Programs Programs Concert Series Description Category Our primary activity is a concert series that operates annually from April to December. We employ international and local talent that best represent the cultures that we feature in our series. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Musical Performances Population Served General/Unspecified,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success We want to instill trust in our patrons that an Ensemble Ibérica concert will be an adventurous experience. It is our goal that patrons become appreciative aficionados of musical genres that they might have not been familiar with before. We frequently feature pre-concert lectures and educational outreach that is relevant to specific concerts in our series and we publish content related to these programs via social media and our website. After each performance there is a meet and greet in which the board and artists of Ensemble Ibérica interact with patrons to get feedback and useful ideas. It is our goal that our patrons become educated about Iberian cultural influence and leave our performances with a much broader global perspective. By regularly collaborating with international artists that are authorities within their own genres, both the audience and collaborating musicians gain heightened knowledge from sources that are unavailable locally. Often times our collaborations are cross-discipline employing musicians from jazz, classical and folkloric traditions. We run our own box office and have accurate numbers from tickets sales. We are also regularly reviewed by the local arts press and we often receive patron feedback through our website and newsletter. Ensemble Ibérica has currently sold 5,306 individual tickets and over two thirds of our venues sell out. The majority of our patrons are age 50 and over and Caucasian. Approximately 20 percent are Latino (Brazilian, Argentine, Colombian and Mexican). 4

5 Outreach Program Description Category The Ensemble Ibérica educational outreach program is led by our board member rma Pacheco O'Neil and is meant to reach schools in the Kansas City area by giving presentations about the history of Spain and its relationship to Kansas City, various regional dance styles, the relationship between guitar and dance and how they evolved throughout Spain and the Americas. We maintain a special fund from specific donors so that we may perform these programs at underserved schools. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Cultural & Ethnic Awareness Population Served K-12 (5-19 years),, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success The changes and attitudes we wish our clients to experience are a heightened sensitivity to Iberian colonial influence on both a larger historical scale and in their personal lives on a local scale. During these programs we impart specific knowledge regarding rhythm, tempo, mood and timing between dancers and musicians. With the use of props, the program introduces the audience to many culturally specific items such as the Spanish guitar, fans, flamenco shoes and indigenous textiles. We always end each presentation with a question and answer session and a chance for students to briefly speak with us as well as see and touch props. We have two highly engaging programs focusing on Spain and Mexico that incorporate elements from various school subjects including: Spanish, music, art, geography, world history, drama and dance. By using a multimedia presentation with live music and dance our goal is to integrate our performance with subjects that students have already encountered in their own studies. We utilize web-based surveys and we regularly receive feedback from educators that are employed at the schools we visit. Ensemble Ibérica has had a rigorous outreach program since its founding in We have performed for over 1500 students and had numerous school bookings scheduled for our 2017 Season. CEO Comments Kansas City was recently designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as part of its Creative Cities Network for music. Kansas City is the only U.S. city ever named a music city by UNESCO. This recognition is a great honor and also focuses international attention on the city s musical culture. We are an international city ascendant in all aspects. This makes the mission of Ensemble Iberica that more pertinent. 5
