1 2018/2019 Penn Manor High School Manor Singers Handbook Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines for the School Year Mrs. Lauren Ciemiewicz Director One can live without music; one hardly does Max Kaplan

2 Course Description This is an auditioned ensemble for students in grades Manor Singers meets on days 2, 4 & 6 during block 1 for the entire school year. Singing repertoire will include music from all genres and time periods. The majority of the repertoire is a cappella, with occasional accompanied pieces. To be a member of Manor singers requires a great commitment of time and participation. This ensemble performs a winter concert in December and a spring concert in May, along with many other performances throughout the school year. You will find some of these dates listed under the calendar portion of this syllabus. Please note, there will be more performances in addition to what is listed on the calendar. Please keep your schedule open the first two weekends in December, as these dates will likely fill up will performances. Participation and attendance is expected at all rehearsals during school, outside of school, and all concerts. Failure to participate or attend these rehearsals and concerts will negatively affect your grade and you will no longer be considered for this ensemble in future years. Your participation and attendance at performances and rehearsals is critical to the success of the entire ensemble. Course Objectives STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: Recognize and perform various musical styles and genres with authenticity and accuracy Develop performance and vocal technique skills as an individual and as an ensemble Read and interpret musical notation rhythmically, melodically, and harmonically Develop skills to analyze, critique, and evaluate music from a theoretical perspective Enhance ear-training and sight-singing skills through knowledge and practice of solfege Page 2

5 Classroom Expectations Exhibit Positive and Effective Behavior in Class and on Stage Respect: Take pride in respecting classmates, director, and property. Refrain from gum-chewing, disruptive talking, texting, and other disruptive behaviors. No food in the choral rehearsal. No drinks are permitted unless they are in a sealed container. All drinks besides water should be sealed in your bag for the duration of the rehearsal. There will be student leaders from time to time. You must show them the same respect you show the teacher. Do not talk during National Anthem, announcements, or while the teacher is talking. Tardiness will not be tolerated. You will be marked late if you enter after the 7:40 bell. It will show up on your attendance record, which can result in multiple detentions. Unexcused tardies will also result in a grade deduction. Harassment: Music is internationally understood as an art form that brings people of diverse backgrounds and opinions together. Harassment in the choral program is unacceptable. You are expected to do your best to resolve simple disagreements on your own. If it is impossible to resolve disagreements without assistance, the officers will help to find a resolution. Serious issues that remain unresolved by the officers should be referred to Mrs. Ciemiewicz. Manor Singers Folders and Music: Each member will be responsible for a choir folder. This folder will be used for the entire year and must be brought to class each day. You will also be issued music throughout the year. This music should be kept in your folder. You will be charged replacement costs for any lost or damaged music and/or folder. Music= approx. $2.50 per song; Folder= approx. $12 per folder. You will be assigned an unsecured slot in the choir room for folder storage. If you choose to keep it in your slot, you are still responsible for the contents. Please keep a pencil in your choir folder. You will be instructed to mark your music scores frequently. Music will be checked from time to time for required markings, so please make sure you always have a pencil to mark your score. Do not use pen! Page 5

6 Grading Policy The next two pages are very important in understanding the grade your student will receive. If there are any questions, please contact Mrs. Ciemiewicz. Participation 30% Performances 35% Assignments 25% Solo work - 10% Participation 30% You will be given 25 points a week for rehearsal participation. You may lose points for the following behaviors exhibited during rehearsal: Failure to mark music scores Unexcused tardy Food or gum during rehearsal Texting or using cell phone during rehearsal Missing folder and/or music Disruptive behavior Inability to follow directions Lack of participation--rehearsal/warm-ups Lack of participation in sectional rehearsals -3 points -3 points -5 points -5 points -5 points -10 points -10 points -15 points -15 points Performances 35% Performance Attendance Students will receive up to 100 points per performance. Points will be deducted in the following manner: Unexcused tardy Student lacks appropriate dress Improper concert etiquette -10 points -20 points -20 points Absences Unexcused: Work, sports, and other events are not an excuse to miss a concert. You know the dates for these commitments well in advance. You are expected to make the proper arrangements to be in attendance. It is understood that attendance at these functions is mandatory. Failure to attend a performance will result in an unexcused absence and total loss of points. The only exceptions to this mandatory policy are as follows: Religious holidays Documented illness Family emergencies approved by the school Admin. **In the case of an excused absence falling under one of the categories listed above, an alternate assignment will be provided on a case-by-case basis. In order to have an excused absence, you must let Mrs. Ciemiewicz know one month in advance of the concert. Failure to do so will result in loss of points. Page 6

7 Assignments 25% Written Work Quizzes, tests, and self-reflections may be utilized during any given quarter. Assignments may be administered through google classroom or verbally during class. Each assignment will be given a point value ranging from 10 points to 50 points. In addition, students are expected to put rehearsal markings in their music as instructed during rehearsals. Performance Quizzes You are responsible for reviewing and rehearsing all music in the ensemble repertoire on your own time in addition to our scheduled rehearsals. You will be tested on your performance of your vocal line intermittently throughout the year. Be prepared to sing in quartets, in your voice section, and individually. Any music that we have rehearsed in class is fair game for performance quizzes. You may also be asked to record yourself and send the clip to Mrs. Ciemiewicz via google classroom for a grade. Each assignment will be given a point value ranging from 10 points to 50 points. You will also be responsible for completing sight-reading exercises as rehearsed in class. You will be graded in groups and individually. Solo Work 10% We will have Manor Singer Solos twice throughout the school year. Students will be responsible for preparing a piece to sing in front of the class. Students will be graded on preparation and performance. Concert Attire All members are required to follow the concert attire dress code. Failure to do so will result in a point deduction and possible dismissal from the concert. Concert Dress Code Manor Singer Uniforms: Girls: Black Formal Gown, Black shoes NO necklaces!! Guys: Tux outfits, Black shoes, Black socks, Bow tie Longer hair should be pulled back from the face by ponytail etc. Dress violations will be dealt with by grade deductions. You are representing Penn Manor High School, your director, your parents, yourselves, the ensemble, and the community. Take pride in the appearance of the group.
