2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement The mission of the Chorus is to foster the singing talents of its members and share the art of choral performance with the community through the pursuit of choral excellence in both the rehearsal and performance of diverse musical styles. Background Statement Founded in 2003, the Liberty Community Chorus is an 80-voice chorus open to singers 16 years of age and older. The Chorus consists of non-auditioned singers from throughout the greater Kansas City area who prepare, rehearse, and perform modern and ancient choral works from the world s great composers. The chorus typically performs three concerts each year. Concerts have included selections sung in Latin, German, Russian, Hebrew, Estonian, Gaelic, and Chinese. Throughout its history, the Liberty Community Chorus has featured the music of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff, as well as more recent works. In Spring 2015, the Liberty Community Chorus performed James Whitbourn s Son of God Mass for the first time in the greater Kansas City area as part of the Dome and Spire Concert Series at the Community of Christ Temple in Independence, MO. The Chorus also has performed with the Liberty Symphony at the Liberty Heritage Festival, as well as at the Jewish Community Center and rthwest Missouri State University. In 2006, the Liberty Community Chorus received designation as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, charitable organization by the Internal Revenue Service. Impact Statement Accomplishments: The concert season kicked off on vember 5th with "Songs from the Cinema," in partnership with B&B Theaters. The concert featured works from the Harry Potter, Star Wars, and James Bond films, as well as music from Schindler's List, Carousel, The Sound of Music, and Amistad. Approximately 450 audience members attended the fall 2017 concert.the season concluded with an April performance at the Community of Christ Temple in Independence, Missouri. The church s organist-in-residence, Jan Kraybill, accompanied the Chorus at these concerts. This concert attracted approximately 550 audience members.in addition to regular season concerts, 18 members of the Liberty Community Chorus participated in The National Memorial Day Choral Festival in This is a choral workshop directed by Craig Jessup in Washington, D.C., culminating in a performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and at the Opening Ceremonies of the National Memorial Day Parade. Goals: Establish a planned schedule of commissioned works, so we premiere a new work by a known composer every other year.increase singer and audience participation through a broader range of concert themes, without sacrificing artistic value.improve data tracking to better understand the Chorus s audience and membership to provide relevant programming that serves the artistic needs of both constituencies. Needs Statement The Chorus s primary need is to establish a reliable financial basis beyond dues and ticket sales to allow for more expansive programming, outfitting the Chorus in more professional manner, establishing a schedule for the commission of new works, and additional storage space for our growing library. Estimated cost for the preliminary outfitting of the Chorus (100 members) is $8,000 to $10,000. Estimated maintenance and replenishment expenses are estimated at $800 to $1,000 per year. Buying and performing larger works with their related instrumental requirements ranges from $3,000 to $10,000, depending upon the piece, the instrumentation required, and the chosen performance venue. Commissioned works cost approximately $1,000 per performance minute resulting in an average cost of $5,000 Basic additional music storage supplies are estimated at $400 per year. This could increase dramatically should we lose our current space donated by a local church. 2

3 CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement The Liberty Community Chorus is made up of volunteer singers who donate their time and talent, are dedicated to choral excellence, and are committed to sharing this with not only Liberty but the entire metro. Given the dedication of all these volunteers, the Chorus continues in its efforts to grow its member base, expand performance locales, increase concert attendance and stablize funding. The Chorus has been blessed to be under the direction of multi-gifted Director, Bryan Taylor, whose dedication to the Liberty Community Chorus, and belief in its mission are unfailing. Taylor has been able to touch the Chorus, and its audience, by giving back to the community, though his directing and teaching, the knowledge and experience he has acquired over his years in the choral music industry. The Board of Directors is made up of up to 15 volunteer members, including four officers,an executive director and committee chairs. The Board of Directors governs the administrative operations of the Chorus by performing various duties such as budget planning, assisting in concert season planning, marketing, website building and maintenance, and fundraising. In their second decade, the Chorus continues to seek stable long term funding sources beyond member dues and ticket sales. A major long term goal is to increase our community outreach by hosting a choral festival in the Kansas City Metro led by a nationally known director and open to singers from throughout the region. This will raise our profile, bringing in more singers and audience members. Additionally it offers the opportunity to perform larger works with a chorus of greater than 100 members. The Chorus defines success as repeatedly connecting with and leaving an impact on Liberty, and surrounding communities, through sharing our musical gifts. Increases in funding will allow the Chorus to sustain artistic excellence while expanding our outreach. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Musical Performances Population Served General/Unspecified,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By We hope to change attitudes towards choral music from only a medium for classical music lovers to something that can be appreciated by all music lovers through increasing knowledge and understanding of the art form. We also want to more fully engage our community and increase understanding on how music can bring help and hope whether you participate as a singer or audience member. Liberty Community Chorus is committed to enriching the lives of both attendees and choir members. To achieve this goal, the Chorus seeks to achieve the following outcomes. - At least 90% of audience members will report being inspired by the concert experience. - At least 90% of choir members will report concert participation as a gratifying experience. It is the mission of the Liberty Community Chorus to foster the singing talents of the choir and share the art of choral music with our community through the pursuit of choral excellence and the rehearsal and performance of varied and diverse music. Additionally, the artistic director s goal is to continue to find exciting and poignant choral literature that inspires our singers and audience and to present programs that are musically fulfilling to the singers and serve as a tool to teach and allow artistic growth for our community and audience. To measure audience outcomes, Liberty Community Chorus will include a paper survey in each concert program. The choir director will bring attention to the paper survey through an announcement made during the concert s intermission. Volunteers will collect surveys in the lobby as attendees exit the concert, as well as during the concert reception. The Chorus s website will also have a response page. This resource will allow concert-goers to share impressions regarding the concert once they have had time to reflect on its impact. The board of directors will an online survey link to all participating singers to measure choir member outcomes. 4

The Chorus s role in the community is clear from its designation as the City of Liberty s official community chorus by official proclamation of the mayor and city council. William Jewell College has been a generous partner, offering its facilities as both a rehearsal and concert space. The Liberty Symphony and the Liberty Community Chorus partner in a joint concert at least once every three years. The Liberty Symphony is led by Dr. Tony Brandolino of William Jewell College. Liberty s historic Belvoir Winery and Inn generously provides the Chorus with space for fundraising events, board meetings, and even rehearsals if a conflict arises with the Chorus s regular rehearsal space. The Chorus has also had the honor of performing with guest musicians from across the Kansas City metro, including soloists from the Kansas City Chorale and organist Jan Kraybill of the Community of Christ Temple in Independence.
