1 Church Music Notes F E B R UA R Y 2014 Pedals, Pipes & Pizza 2014 Celebrate Spring and the (belated) birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach! On Saturday, March 29, young pianists will have an opportunity to meet the King of Instruments, the pipe organ! This event, entitled Pedals, Pipes & Pizza 2014, is sponsored by the Association of Church Musicians, which includes the Madison Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Pedals, Pipes & Pizza 2014 will begin at 9:00 a.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1609 University Avenue, Madison WI ( The opening session, led by ACM/AGO members, Linda Krueger and John Krueger, will feature a video from the American Guild of Organists entitled Pulling Out All the Stops. Then students will be able to see, hear, and play the three-manual Holtkamp pipe organ, installed in Our host will be ACM/AGO member and Director of Music, Don DeBruin. Students will then travel a few blocks away to St. Andrew s Episcopal Church, 1833 Regent Street, Madison, WI ( Following a pizza lunch (maybe from Extreme Pizza), students will have the opportunity to see, hear, and play the Taylor & Boody two-manual pipe organ, installed in ACM/AGO member Ken Stancer, Director of Music at St. Andrew s, will be our host. We will then travel to St. James Catholic Church (part of Good Shepherd Parish), 1128 St. James Court, Madison, WI ( and have the opportunity to see, hear, and play the Wadsworth three-manual pipe organ, originally built in Our host will be ACM/AGO member and Director of Music, Mark Miller. Pedals, Pipes & Pizza 2014 will conclude at 3:00 p.m. Piano students, ages 9-16 (grades three and up), who would like to take part in Pedals, Pipes & Pizza 2014 can contact John Krueger (phone: ; j.krueger@att.net). Registration is required. The deadline for registration is March 22. A registration form and detailed schedule appear in this newsletter. Pedals, Pipes & Pizza 2014 (including lunch) is free to all participants. Parents and guardians are welcome and are encouraged to join us. Students are encouraged to bring a piece of piano music to play on the three pipe organs. See pages five and six of this newsletter for schedule and registration information.
2 Two Noon-time Recital Series Continue in Madison Wednesdays at noon, from 12:00 12:30pm, come to Luther Memorial Church, 1021 University Avenue, Madison, to hear a weekly organ recital by Director of Music Bruce Bengtson. Our Frank Lloyd Wright designed Meeting House hosts talented area musicians every Friday, October through May, from 12:15 to 1:00 p.m. Bring your lunch and enjoy complimentary coffee, tea and live music. The concerts are free of charge. St. Andrew s Episcopal Concert Series Continues: Friday, March 28 at 7:30pm: MADISON FLUTE ENSEMBLE The Madison Flute Club, directed by Danielle Breisach, uses the standard C, alto and bass flutes and piccolo to make a unique and beguiling musical experience. Friday, May 9 at 7:30pm: ORGAN RECITAL Kathrine Hanford, professor of organ at Lawrence University, is the recipient of numerous awards, an advocate for new music for organ, and a frequent recitalist in America, Canada, and Scandinavia. The Ruth Pilger Andrews investment portfolio posted a modest increase. President s Report The Capitol Caroling event on December 27 had about 40 participants, a success meriting consideration of a second annual event next Christmas season. Membership Committee We have 67 churches and 11 non-affiliated individuals (a total of 56 AGO members) with a mailing list of about 210, which is near last year s levels. We should ponder ways to more aggressively gain memberships for the coming year. An updated directory anticipated by the end of the month. Scholarship Committee One new application for support recently received. The committee (Bruce Bengtson, Julie Shipe McClain, John Daane) next meets at the Verona Public Library on January 30 at 10:30 a.m. Other Business Digital images of the portable banner made for events at Bethel Lutheran presented; we will discuss cost, design and content ideas for our own banner at the next board meeting. Capitol rotunda summer performance of a multi-part piece suggested, possibly in connection with the Early Music Festival. Next meeting scheduled for Monday, February 10, 2014, at noon. Church Worship Band Director. All Saints Lutheran Church, Fitchburg, WI, seeks a worship band director for the 10:45 Sunday worship service. The band has percussion, guitar, bass and vocals. 3xs per month, one Thursday practice per month. The band does contemporary Christian music and some solos.
