1 RIAM Teaching Network Conference 3 & 4 July 2014
2 Director s Welcome You are most welcome to the inaugural RIAM Teaching Network Conference. The Royal Irish Academy of Music was created over 160 years ago by music practitioners who were committed to nurturing music making and enjoyment in Ireland. Across this span of almost two centuries the RIAM has engaged with over 1,000,000 musicians, and we have seen the music teaching profession grow across the island of Ireland to include many thousands of practitioners who are working at nurturing a love for music in enthusiasts of all ages. The RIAM Teaching Network was founded to support these professionals, to create a community of learning where the music teacher could connect with, and learn from, their peers. This new conference is one example of how we envisage reaching out and connecting with you, and we plan to roll out other opportunities across a range of media. I hope that you enjoy the conference and I look forward to meeting you. Please keep checking for new initiatives. Deborah Kelleher Director, Royal Irish Academy of Music Teaching Network Welcome I would like to welcome you all to the Royal Irish Academy of Music for the first RIAM Teaching Network conference. The Teaching Network website, teachingnetwork.riam.ie, has been live now for just four months, and already it has allowed the RIAM to reach out and connect with teachers, all over Ireland. I hope that you are finding it useful so far and that you will continue to find it beneficial and engaging as it develops further in the coming months. Today s conference is an event we are very proud of, because it brings together the RIAM faculties, along with staff from the Library and the Local Centre, to provide you with, what we hope, will be an interesting, educational and thought-provoking two days. We are also delighted to have Finghin Collins with us to give the keynote address on his journey with the piano. My hope is that you will leave the conference full of new ideas and enthusiam for the next academic year! This event would not be possible without the help of so many people and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them. In the Local Centre Office Dorothy McCauley, Ruth Milligan-Moody, Claire O Callaghan and Bernadette O Sullivan; In the General Office Frances Hogan, Elizabeth Pink, Roisin Murphy and Ellen Inwood; In reception - Bernard Fox, Darina Marks and Maurice Slater; The Senior Examiners Lorna Horan, Jennifer McCay and Hilda Milner; Kevin Kelleher, Ruth Meehan and Sinéad Heyenga; In the Library Philip Shields and Laoise Doherty; and from the RIAM Faculties Jean Archibald, Anthony Byrne, William Dowdall, Kim Fallen Bailey, Réamonn Keary, Miriam Roycorft, Maureen V. Ward and Anne Woodworth. Special recognition is due to Theresa Doyle, the Local Centre Manager, for her unwavering dedication to making this event a success. I would also like to thank Deborah Kelleher for her constant enthusiasm and support throughout the planning for today s conference. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you, the teachers, who have been so positive and encouraging about the RIAM Teaching Network. I look forward to talking to you all over the course of the two days and I hope you enjoy the conference. Jennifer O Connor-Madsen Conference Organiser and Project Manager, RIAM Teaching Network

5 RIAM Information TEACHING Technology NETWORK Solutions PRESENTS The RIAM Teaching Network teachingnetwork.riam.ie In March 2014 the RIAM was delighted to go live, with Ireland s first Virtual Learning Envoirnment(VLE) for music teachers, the RIAM Teaching Netowork. Throught the website the RIAM will facilitate the development of an active community of music teachers in Ireland, as well as creating a space for virtual learning and networking. The RIAM Teaching Network is updated regularly with contributions from RIAM staff, with videos, articles and PDFs on all aspects of music teaching. We are constantly working towards creating new and exciting content, to benefit music teachers of all disciplines. Some highlights so far are the notes from Réamonn Keary s Key Skills workshop in 2013, an article from the RIAM Librarian, Philp Shields, on sourcing the music you need, a video with Anthony Byrne on preparing scales and a video with Bill Dowdall on the melodic exercises for Flute. As we move towards the new syllabus for 2015, we will have lots of new videos and articles on aspects of the syllabus for all instruments. Our Online Community The RIAM Teaching Network has several areas dedicated to the members - the Groups Section and the Teaching Directory. The groups allow users to connect with other teachers in the same field. Each group has a built-in forum to allow teachers to discuss aspects of teaching, the syllabus and the exams. The teaching directory allows members of the public to search for teachers in their area. If they find a suitable candidate, they can send them a private message through the Teaching Network. The Network allows teachers to create their own profile, adding as much information as they like. If you have any questions or would like any further information, you can jenniferoconnor@riam.ie or teachingnetwork@riam.ie. You will also find us on Facebook and Twitter.
