one lght openng pece, one post-world War composton, and one romantc warhorse from the concert lterature n ths case, the peces were JC Bach's Symphony n E for double orchestra, A Symphony of Three Orchestras by Ellot Carter, and Brahms' Pano Concerto No 2; featurng panst -Peter Serkn The Bach was wrtten n the 1770's whle JS Bach's eldest son was n ondon Ths work s that of a mature JC Bach, contemporary wth some of Mozart's earler work t s scored for wo strng orchestras, the frst accompaned by oboes, horns and bassoons, the second joned by two flutes The work, as played by the BSO, rests on BSO opens season wth Bach, BrahmVs Klaver the strength of the strngs The BSO has axn excellent strng secton, and ths pecee served as a showcase for ther ablty tc play wth unty and clarty The choce of the pece tself seems nap proprate; perhaps the management or conductor/musc drector Sej Ozawa hmself feels that he should conduct 7th and 18th1 century musc to mantan hs credentals nf the muscal world However, the 60-odd strng players totally overwhelmed the 2 flutes, 2 oboes and harpschord durng the tutt passages, allowngthe wnds to be heard dstnctly only when the strng s exhbted great self-restrant durng a few wnd solos And there s no wvay that the 17 Voln l's could smultaneously execute a trll wth the precson of 8 or 10 equally talented volnsts Ellot Carter (1908-), a student of Walter Pston and Nada Boulanger, has to rank as one of ths country's best-known lvng composers Best known for hs Strng Quartet No 1, Carter was one of sx composers commssoned n 1976 by the Natonal Endowment for the Arts to Wrte ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~,U1 lb C-- ~ '1- la~1l~-an -, '1 -- lac ~ F ~_! f r d! < - - ^lj~f ~~~~~~~~~~~~~- " S k~~~~ewt works for the New York, Boston, Phladelpha, Cleveland, Chcago, and os Angeles orchestras ke most twenteth century composers, Carter makes lberal use of percusson - vbraphone, chmes, xylophone, marmaba, anvl, tam-tams, and trangle are but a few of the varous nstruments played by the three percussonsts The performance of such a contemporary work-must be crtczed sde-by-sde wth the work tself Begnnng wth the sheen of the hgh volns,, Carter shows hmself a master of orchestral texture and color However, n terms of structure and form, Carter's pece left the audence desrng somethng more easly comprehended;
