2 SCHOOL AND GROUP PROGRAMS Registration for school programs and concerts opens the first week of September 2018! Check our website for details. PRE-SCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN WEE ONES AT THE WINSPEAR: OPPOSITES Bring your group of little ones to the Winspear Centre for hands-on musical fun! During this 50-minute program your children will learn all about the concept of opposites through music and movement, peer inside the majestic Davis Concert Organ, and be introduced to various percussion instruments! COST: $150 FOR A 50-MINUTE PROGRAM Maximum 25 children per group. One adult per five children required. Dates are limited; book soon to avoid disappointment. GRADE 3 SCIENCE OF SOUND During this full-day program, students have the unique opportunity to tour the Winspear Centre from top to bottom, learning about sound through hands-on inquiry. Students work together to discover how various instruments make sound and explore the amazing acoustics of the Winspear Centre. As part of this jam-packed program, classes spend time with a professional musician, and may even get to sit in on an Edmonton Symphony Orchestra rehearsal! Program specifics will be determined based on your needs in consultation with the Program Coordinator. COST: $450 FOR A FULL-DAY PROGRAM Maximum 28 children with one supervisor per 7 students. Additional fees apply for larger classes. Dates are limited; book soon to avoid disappointment. GRADES 2-6 WINSPEAR SOUND SCHOOL During this Inquiring Minds site-based experience, the Winspear Centre will become your classroom for a week. Students learn about all aspects of a performance venue including lighting, acoustics, instruments, philanthropy, and more through hands-on inquiry. You ll work with our Program Coordinator to customize your week to suit your curricular goals, and we ll provide resources to incorporate your Sound School learning throughout the school year. WE RE FULLY REGISTERED FOR THIS YEAR check our website in March to apply for 2019/2020 dates! GRADES 4-6 ESO ADOPT-A-PLAYER Students explore the joys of creating and performing their own musical work, led by an ESO musician! Your adopted musician will visit your school and collaborate with teaching staff to guide students through the process of creating an original piece of music. Students then perform their composition on-stage at the Winspear Centre in April. PARTICIPATION IS FREE OF CHARGE Open to all Gr. 4-6 classes who attend an Education Concert in February. Program runs from January to April Up to ten classes are selected per year. Application deadline: December 1, 2018 Showcase Concert: April 28, 2019 GRADES ALL GRADES YOUNG COMPOSERS PROJECT CUSTOMIZED PROGRAMMING We offer programs to fit into your schedule. Contact us and we ll be happy to customize a visit to your unique needs. From tours to choir workshops to band clinics to instrument demonstrations, we can develop a plan that will work for your group. One student will: receive a $1,250 bursary towards post-secondary studies; participate in a mentorship with an ESO Composer; compose a new work; and hear it performed by the ESO in front of a live audience. Students gain an inside view of the rehearsal process through a live blog feed broadcast in the hall and through a Q&A with composers, conductors, or other special guests. Students will be engaged in directed listening and gain an introduction to the historical context of great contemporary and classical symphonic works. This is the ultimate experience for both orchestral newbies and die-hard musicians! BRAHMS, SCHUMANN & STRAUSS PRIOR CONDUCTS BEETHOVEN Enjoy the rich harmonies of three composers from the romantic era as we welcome back two favourite guests of the ESO; conductor Jose-Luis Gomez, and violin soloist Karen Gomyo. A rare opportunity to witness a rehearsal for the world premiere of our Chief Conductor Alexander Prior s violin concerto, performed by the ESO and his talented friend Simone Porter! RAVEL, SHOSTAKOVICH & STRAVINSKY THE GOLDEN AGE OF BROADWAY THE MUSIC OF ROGERS & HAMMERSTEIN Friday, November 16 SEASONAL SOUNDSCAPES WALL-TO-WALL PERCUSSION Blustery winds, fall colours, crisp winter snow, spring showers music can sound like all this and more! Join the ESO as they play their way through seasons, storms, and sunshine. Features excerpts from Vivaldi s Four Seasons, Beethoven s Pastorale Symphony, and more. Klang, klang, prattle bong bang! Make your noise all day with wall to wall percussion. Special guest Vern Griffiths will play everything, including the kitchen sink! Hear orchestral classics by Tchaikovsky and Bizet while learning all about the amazing instruments found in the percussion family. AGES 0-4 YEARS MUSIC BOX BABIES Parents, do know that your baby has memories of the music they heard before they were even born? YONA-SISTEMA* YONA-Sistema (Youth Orchestra of Northern Alberta) is an inclusive, community-focused afterschool program which uses music education as a vehicle for social change in Edmonton s under-served neighbourhoods. The program is free for participating students thanks to generous funding support from partners and donors. YONA-Sistema offers the joys and benefits of music to students who otherwise would not have access to music lessons. ADULT PROGRAMS AGES 22 + Our Rusty Musicians programs are a wonderful professional development opportunity for music specialists. RUSTY MUSICIANS: B-SIDES This is your chance to sit B-Side a musician from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra as you work through favourite pieces from the classical repertoire. You ll get a unique behind the scenes glimpse of a real orchestra at work while playing music along with the pros! If you re a nonprofessional instrumental musician or you used to play and thought those days were behind you it s time to dust off your orchestral instrument. Join the ESO on stage at the Winspear Centre for an evening rehearsal, led by Chief Conductor Alexander Prior. Dates: March 27, 2019 Fee: $100/person RUSTY MUSICIANS: SUMMER CAMP Spend five days with us in the summer and immerse yourself in music and performance. Summer Academy is designed for adult non-professional musicians. With expert instruction from members of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and other professional musicians, this camp provides a unique opportunity for classes, rehearsals, and sectional instruction all leading up to a performance on the stage of the Winspear Centre! Join your fellow non-pros for five days of intense and fun orchestral study and fall in love with making music all over again. Opportunities for private lessons and masterclasses are also provided, as well as an optional chamber music track for even more music-making and performance opportunities.
