1 April 2012 President s Message Dear Parents, Since our last newsletter much has been accomplished by the Friends of Hanover Music and it's members. The January fundraiser, Aloha Hanover, was a great success! We earned approximately $5,000. The sheer magnitude of this event ensured it could not have been accomplished without our collective energy. My sincere thanks to each person who contributed to the evening. The month of March was Music in Our Schools month. It certainly was a busy time for the Friends of Hanover Music, as well as our dedicated music faculty. The High School hosted Sr. SEMSBA and got the opportunity to showcase and share our wonderful new facility. Again, I must thank the wonderful volunteers who helped to make the weekend run smoothly. We really are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of parents who help us. However, it seems it is often the same set of folks participating in meetings and events. If you haven't been as involved as perhaps you would like, there is no time like the present! Many of our Executive Board members terms are expiring. We would love to find new people who will join us and continue to support Hanover s outstanding music programs. If you or someone you know has an interest, please encourage them to contact me for more information. My address is: amchpmc@yahoo.com Upcoming Friends of Hanover Music Meetings 7:15 PM At Hanover High School - Wednesday, April 11th - Tuesday, May 8th Please join us! Now is the time to think of joining the Friends of Hanover Music for the upcoming season. Your time, talent and treasure is just what is needed to continue our outstanding music programs in the Hanover Schools Anne-Marie Cameron, President Friends of Hanover Music
2 Cedar/Center/Sylvester Elementary Schools Cedar School Music Director - Paula McMahon Hi from Cedar School, With spring fast approaching, Kindergarten has been talking and singing about butterflies, caterpillars and planting in the garden. 2 nd grade has been traveling around the world singing and dancing to songs from Brazil, Japan, Hawaii and Africa, while 1 st grade is learning how some notes in music are repeated and others step and jump. Our 3 rd grade students received their recorders in February and are working hard trying to make a great sound. 4 th grade has been studying the symphony orchestra. We ve listened to some great CD recordings featuring the string, brass and percussion sections, with the woodwind section soon to follow. Meanwhile, 4 th grade chorus is preparing for their Spring Concert which will include singing, dancing and recorders. Submitted by Paula McMahon Cedar School Music Hanover Middle School Music & Bands Director - Julienne Thornell Music & Chorus/Troupe Director - John Schumacher Looking back at the past few months, we have had a lot going on at the middle school. In January, we were fortunate to have Ed Sorrentino visit some of our classes and lead them in Rhythm Circles. This was made possible with a grant from the HFEE. The Performance Troupe also presented their Winter Jam concert and many of our students participated in the FHM fundraiser at the Cushing Center in Norwell. In February, Hanover Middle School was very pleased to have band students participate in the Jr. SEMSBA auditions in February. From the middle school, three 8th graders were accepted: Megan Crowley (flute), Krystin McDermott (trombone), and Dante Nicotera (baritone sax). The music festival will take place May 4-5 at Braintree's East Middle School. Congratulations to the 7/8 HMS Band! They had a great trip to the State House on March 9 and gave a wonderful performance to a very appreciative audience. This was a great way to celebrate Music In Our Schools month!
3 The bands and koruses are currently preparing for their Spring Concerts. The upcoming Spring Band Concert is the first concert for the 5th grade band and all groups will perform. On Facebook Become a fan of the Hanover Middle School Band. This is a great way to stay connected and view pictures from the State House trip. Upcoming HMS Music Events: April 13 - Performance Troupe Spring Fling, 1pm April 26 - Spring Band Concert, 7pm May 3 --Korus Spring Concert, 7pm May Jr. SEMSBA festival June 7-7/8 performing groups to Six Flags Julienne Thornell Jthornell@hanoverschools.org John Schumacher Jschumacher@hanoverschools.org Hanover High School Choral Director- Alyson Greer Espinosa Band Director- Paul Ketchen From the HHS Choral Music Department: This past month, the Jazz Ensemble participated in the Bridgewater State University Jazz Festival, MAJE Cape Cod/Coastal Sr. Festival and the Clark Terry Jazz Festival at the University of New Hampshire. We had a wonderful learning experience at BSU with our clinicians after our performance. Moreover, we gained valuable knowledge by attending an interactive jazz history workshop and a drumming techniques clinic. The Jazz Ensemble traveled to Mashpee High School for the MAJE Cape Cod/Coastal Sr. Festival and enjoyed an informative clinic after a great performance. The band earned a silver medal and Outstanding Musician citations were awarded to Zachary Plummer, Alex Sennett, and Tyler Cheo. The Jazz Ensemble also just recently traveled up to the University of New Hampshire for the Clark Terry Jazz Festival, which draws over 60 performing ensembles from across the Northeast. At our first appearance at the UNH Jazz Festival, the band performed a great set and earned the Outstanding Band Award for Class B Bands! HMS Band Website Like us on Facebook

We hosted 340 students from over 30 schools that comprised the honor band, orchestra, and chorus, as well as about 50 music directors from these schools across the South Shore. Alyson and I continue to receive great feedback from all visiting teachers, as well as HHS staff on how well organized the festival was and how great all the volunteers were. Thank you so much for your help-we couldn't have hosted without you!
