The awards are pen t students wh are enrlled in High Schls, Clleges, and Universities during the schl year thrughut the Nrthwest Regin, including Alaska, Idah, Mntana, Oregn, Washingtn, and Wyming. The gal f this unique prgram is t fster the cmpsitin and public perfrmance f chral wrks by talented yung cmpsers. Students may submit wrks in ne f the fllwing three categries. Categry A: Students enrlled in a public r private high schl thrughut the Nrthwest Regin Categry B: Undergraduate students enrlled in a public r private university, cllege, r cmmunity cllege thrughut the Nrthwest Regin Categry C: Graduate students enrlled in a public r private university r cllege thrughut the Nrthwest Regin (Graduate students wh have cmpleted their curse wrk and wh are in the thesis r dissertatin stage may als submit scres.) One cmpser frm each f the three categries listed abve will be presented with a cash award and will have their wrk perfrmed n the Opus 7 cncert n May 13, (NOTE: Opus 7 reserves the right t withhld awards in any r all f the three categries if suitable entries are nt received.) Presentatin f the awards and perfrmances f the winning wrks will take place n Opus 7 May cncert series, entitled 25 th Anniversary Celebratin Cncert. Winners are strngly encuraged t be present at the May 13, 2017 cncert. Submissins will be reviewed by a panel cmprised f Lren Pntén, Artistic Directr f Opus 7 and Jhn Muehleisen, Opus 7 Cmpser-in-Residence. Guidelines and Rules Wrks must be n shrter than 3 minutes and n lnger than 5 minutes in length. Wrks submitted shuld be in keeping with classical r serius chral art-music style and traditin, but may als incrprate elements f jazz. Wrks in pp r shw-chir style are nt eligible. Cmpsers may submit ne r mre existing wrks and/r may cmpse a new cmpsitin. Existing wrks that have nt yet received a public perfrmance are als eligible fr submissin. Cmpsers may submit wrks fr either f the fllwing cmbinatins: a cappella chir (up t SSAATTBB) r chir with pian (up t SSAATTBB). Since its inceptin, Opus 7 Vcal Ensemble has established a reputatin fr cntinually featuring a diverse range f new and rarely perfrmed wrks, alng with time-hnred classics f chral literature. Frmed in 1992 as a prfessinal chral grup by funding directr Lren Pntén, Opus 7 specializes in 19th- thrugh 21st-century a cappella chral music. As a resident ensemble f St. James Cathedral in Seattle, Washingtn since 1994, Opus 7 is firmly dedicated t perfrming the wrks f lcal and reginal cmpsers, regularly cmmissining new chral cmpsitins. In additin, since 2000 Opus 7 has fstered new talent in the field f chral music thrugh their unique Student Chral Cmpsitin Awards Prgram. Over the years, Opus 7 has increasingly grwn in stature thrugh its internatinally acclaimed CDs and in the past several years has been recgnized as ne f the natin's finest and mst innvative chral ensembles. Opus 7's cntributin t the expansin f the internatinal chral repertire and its tireless dedicatin t the cmmissining and perfrmance f new wrks has been recgnized natinally by ASCAP (American Sciety f Cmpsers, Authrs and Publishers) and Chrus America. In June f 2006, Opus 7 received the prestigius Award fr Adventurus Prgramming fr the third cnsecutive time, having als wn in 2002 and Opus 7 is hnred t be the first in the histry f this award t have wn three cnsecutive awards. Seattle s Opus 7 Vcal Ensemble has been named the winner f the 2013 American Prize in Chral Perfrmance in the Cmmunity Chrus Divisin. Amngst ther distinctins, Opus 7 has been privileged t hst esteemed American chral cnductr Dale Warland in 2001 as guest cnductr fr the pening cncert f its 10th-Anniversary Seasn and again in May f 2005 fr their "Cathedral Classics" cncert. They have als hsted New Zealand's finest chral cnductr Karen Grylls, Philharmnia Nrthwest's Rupen Shakarian, and Seattle chral legend Dr. Rbert Scandrett. They have been a guest-perfrming ensemble fr the American Chral Directrs Assciatin and were featured at the American Guild f Organists Natinal Cnference in Seattle in 2000, perfrming with American chral legend Alice Parker. The grup has als garnered lcal and natinal acclaim fr its fur CD releases: O Rising Dawn, Frm Captivity t the Hly City, and Let us Sing Sweet Sngs, a wrld-premiere recrding f music by Nrthwest cmpser Bern Herblsheimer and their furth CD, As Water Ascends t a Clud, music by Pacific Nrthwest Cmpsers.
