His father Dinny O`Brien, a traditional "box" player, was also a constant source of tunes and inspiration. Mick recorded his first LP with his family when he was 13 years old. He later joined Na Pionairi Uilleann, an organisation founded to promote piping, where he absorbed hundreds of tunes and refined his technique. Mick s uilleann pipes were built by William Rowsome in He will perform on the night with his daughter, Ciara who started violin classes at the age of three. She started learning the harp at the age of seven with Michael Rooney and her current instrument is the viola. THE FOUR STAR TRIO At the heart of The Four Star Trio s sound lies the interplay of fiddle and accordion with a subtle underplay of guitar. They have a particular interest in the music of Sliabh Luachra, that musical kingdom which loosely straddles the Cork/Kerry Border. They released a brilliant CD entitled The Square Triangle a few years back and are currently recording their follow-up album. Con Fada Ó Drisceoil, a native of Skibbereen, plays accordion and writes comic songs in traditional style. He has a special interest in the music of Sliabh Luachra. In 2009 he received the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Composer s award for his songwriting. Johnny McCarthy is a fiddle and flute player extraordinaire. He studied at Cork School of Music and at the Zurich Conservatory under Jean Poulain he holds a degree in Ethnology from UCC. He has also been known to sing the odd song! Pat Herring Ahearne is very much sought after as an accompanist by traditional musicians. He has an understated but tasty style. His alliance with the Four Star Trio has enhanced his reputation amongst lovers of traditional music everywhere. 9

6 DÉ haoine / FRIDAY 25 TH APRIL 2014 CARLOW EASTER FÉILE PROGRAMME 2014 CARLOW CLÁR NA FÉILE CÁSCA DÉ SATHAIRN / SATURDAY 26 TH APRIL A small wire harp in the style of the Brian Boru or Trinity Harp. 10 REMEMBERING BRIAN BORU CONCERT Friday, April 7pm, St. Mary s Church, Carlow One thousand years ago, this year, Brian Boru, King of Munster and All Ireland faced a Viking Force at the Battle of Clontarf.Brian and his armies were victorious on the day, though the elderly King was killed by a retreating Viking Lord. Every Irish schoolkid has heard of Brian Boru, but the events leading up to Good Friday, April 23rd 1014, nor indeed the life and times of the King are not so well known. Brian s court in Co. Clare was said to have been a cultured place, fostering musicians, singers and historians, and perhaps the association stems from this. Either way, it s a great reason to tune up the harps, fiddles, flute, bass, bouzouki and pipes, and celebrate this great Gaelic Tale. Tale of the Gael team up with Carlow born classical flautist Robert Tobin for a well researched, interesting and informative presentation on the times which features aspects of medieval Dublin, 11th century Ireland, Vikings, plenty of music and of course a close-up on Brian.a whole new way of looking at The Life of Brian Boru. Tale of the Gael have sewn this magnificent saga into a 90 minute musical weave that delights, informs and entertains through well researched anecdote and the finest of Irish music. From the opening years of the 11th century, music and story work together bringing the far-flung elements of this fascinating tale to the one bloody confrontation that was Clontarf on April 23rd, Direct from sell out concerts in Strasbourg, France and in C.P.O Lausanne Switzerland, it is an honour to welcome Tale of the Gael to perform Remembering Brian Boru Millenium Concert. Tale of the Gael Musicians Prannie Rhatigan, Sligo, percussion. Prannie has played bodhrán and other percussion with the band since it started, touring Europe and Ireland. She has a very gentle style that complements the often gentle tempos of the courtly harp music, and she often throws in a step or two of sean-nós dance as well! Robert Tobin, Carlow, silver flute. Robert Tobin, from Carlow, currently studying silver flute in Zurich, joins the group Tale of the Gael for the Brian Boru Concert Dave Aebli, Zurich, bouzouki, bass. Dave Aebli from Zurich, Switzerland, also made his own instrument. Dave started playing Irish music at sixteen, and hasn t stopped. He plays with several groups and has an impressive mastery of Irish, Greek and Balkan rhythms. Mickey Dunne, Limerick, Uilleann pipes, whistles, fiddle. Mickey, a legend in his own right, comes from one of the last of Ireland s families of travelling pipers, and learned his craft from his father and uncles who travelled the length and breadth of Ireland with their music. Catherine Rhatigan, Sligo, Irish harp. Catherine spent some years playing and touring with the Belfast Harp Orchestra in the nineties, including a tour of the east coast of America with The Chieftains. Paul Dooley, Clare, wire harp/ fiddle. Paul has spent several years studying wire strung harp and can truly be spoken of as one of the very few who is a master of traditional music on the instrument. Paul s replica was made by himself. He is also a great fiddle player.
