4 Light Concert MUSICWORKS / Popular ENHANCED DISC 1 Introduction 1 MusicWorks Grade 5 Shooting Stars 2 Begin or end your next concert with this dynamic and challenging new work from Richard Saucedo! Filled with rich musical imagery, the opening section features prominent roles for alto and soprano sax soloists while the percussion section provides a pulsating ostinato accompaniment. After a beautiful lyric section, the fast pace returns with antiphonal tradeoffs, and culminates RICHARD L. SAUCEDO in a bombastic statement from the entire ensemble. Dur: 6: Score and Parts...$ Score Only...$10.00 Finale from Symphony No. 1 3 (Revised Edition) Kalinnikov/trans. Glenn Cliffe Bainum/ed. Christopher Heidenreich The skillful transcriptions of the late Glenn Cliffe Bainum have proven to be a standard by which others are measured. This transcription is one of Mr. Bainum s most monumental works. Basile Kalinnikov, a contemporary of Tchaikovsky, died prematurely at 35 just as he was establishing himself as one of the great Russian composers. Originally published in 1958, this new edition features a revised full score and parts for optional antiphonal brass choirs. Dur: ca. 9: Score and Parts...$ Score Only... $25.00 Samuel r. HAZO Parkour 4 Combining brash and aggressive rhythmic figures along with more gentle moments and inventive textures, this impressive work by Samuel Hazo is truly a standout for advanced bands. The piece is built around a four-note motif, which is developed and expanded throughout. A middle section features more of a jazzy flavor with saxes in the spotlight accompanied by finger snaps. The rhythmic intensity returns, building towards a glorious full ensemble affirmation and bringing this exciting work to a powerful conclusion. Dur: 5: Score and Parts...$ Score Only... $15.00 (Available Fall 2011) MusicWorks Grade 4 Continuum 5 Robert Buckley This exciting, innovative new work from Robert Buckley was commissioned by the Troy University Symphony Band in honor of the 37th annual Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic in Alabama. Using a recurring two-measure loop, this uniquely constructed piece is built up around various musical building blocks that are constantly evolving and transforming. The music is dramatic and dynamic, with full-blown ensemble passages suddenly dropping to quiet, powerful moments without ever losing the music s continuous drive. Following an exotic, bluesy middle section the piece builds, accelerating to a thrilling, rhythmic, percussive finish. A real tour de force! Dur: 7: Score and Parts... $ Score Only...$10.00 Jay Bocook O Waly, Waly (A Rhapsody for Band) 6 Jay Bocook Dating from the 1600s, the folk song O Waly, Waly (commonly known as The Water is Wide ) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-note motif common to this song and also Carolina (South Carolina s official song) is developed. This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic-flavored Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestoso section for the entire ensemble. A creative and dynamic work for contest or festival! Dur: 5: Score and Parts... $ Score Only...$10.00 Siorai September 7 Translated from Gaelic as Eternal September, this marvelous setting for band is designed to take each listener back to their own vivid fall memories on a college campus. Commissioned by the University of Notre Dame and premiered at their Carnegie Hall performance in 2010, this work is also dedicated to the composer s father, Dr. Samuel J. Hazo, a 1949 graduate of Notre Dame. Dr. Hazo s poem Home Are the Sailors is incorporated in the middle of the piece. Rich in musical references and varied textures, this is a dramatic and rewarding work for mature ensembles. Dur: ca. 5: Score and Parts... $ Score Only... $ Full version recordings for many titles Search database of all titles Writer bios and photos Visit us on A Guide Along the Pathway 8 This intense and emotional work was commissioned by the Indiana Music Educators Association, and was premiered at the 2011 IMEA Convention with the composer conducting. Written as a gift to longtime friend of music education, Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, the piece is basically lyrical in nature with beautiful lines and colors. A brief faster section, in the words of the composer, describes that uncomfortable time when we are desperately trying to find ourselves. The piece ends on a solemn yet reaffirming note, reminding us of the importance of guides and mentors along life s pathway. 5 MusicWorks Grade 3 Blue and Green Music 9 The stunning artwork of Georgia O Keeffe is no more apparent than in her famous 1921 painting entitled Blue and Green Music. Fittingly commissioned by the Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin (O Keeffe s birthplace), Samuel Hazo does an amazing job of portraying subtle as well as bold colors in musical terms. Based on a single theme that is manipulated and varied throughout, the piece progresses from delicate mallet percussion effects up to climactic impact points for the entire ensemble. O Keeffe explained her idea that music could be translated into something for the eye. And Mr. Hazo succeeds wonderfully in translating it back into something for the ear! Dur: 4: Score and Parts... $ Score Only... $7.50 To Soar with Eagles 10 In this dynamic multi-style overture for band, opens with stark percussive hits, brass fanfares, and swirling woodwind effects. A fast tempo and long build follows, using non-traditional harmonies and overlapping layers of sound, climaxing with a majestic, soaring statement by the entire ensemble. The slower middle section features a solo flute accompanied by rich sonorities and counterlines. The fast tempo returns initiated by the percussion section and then recurring earlier themes as the piece drives to a satisfying finish. With variety and pacing, this is a perfect choice for contest or festival. Dur: 5: Score and Parts... $ Score Only... $7.50 Lullaby from a Distant Star 11 The lush harmonies in this lyrical and emotional piece will provide your students with a wonderful learning tool to improve listening skills, while at the same time providing a spellbinding effect for the listener. Featuring a blend of soft textures, full ensemble peaks, a brief solo flute cadenza, and a sensitive orchestration throughout, the music effectively alludes to far off places. Dur: 3: Score and Parts...$ Score Only...$5.00 ROBERT BUCKLEY Windjammer 12 (Voyage Aboard a Tall Ship) Robert Buckley Windjammers were the last of the great sailing tall ships, and this piece from the pen of Robert Buckley captures the majesty and excitement of these amazing vessels. The voyage begins announced by three solo trumpets surrounding the audience and bouncing musical phrases off one another. The sails are raised, the ship is underway, and the audience is taken on a colorful and exciting musical voyage. This is effective and skillfully scored programmatic music at its best. Dur: 5: Score and Parts... $ Score Only... $7.50 enhanced DISC 1...To Realms of Endless Day 13 Johnnie Vinson Here s a beautifully scored lyric piece featuring a flowing melody passed from section to section. There is also a nice variety of lighter, delicate textures contrasted with dramatic full ensemble passages. Composed in memory of a mother and daughter who lost their lives in an automobile accident, this is a sensitive and poignant setting appropriate for times when a memorial is called for. Dur: 3: Score and Parts...$ Score Only...$5.00 The Singing River 14 Johnnie Vinson In the Shoals region of northwest Alabama, the Tennessee River is often referred to as the singing river, a term originating with the Yuchi tribe of Native Americans. Commissioned by the Shoals Area Band Directors Association, Johnnie Vinson has created an effective work for band that focuses on the river s relationship to life in this area both past and present. A primary river theme is stated from which a series of variants creates a fascinating and appealing musical tapestry. Dur: 5: Score and Parts... $ Score Only... $7.50 Song for Hope 15 Written as a memorial for a middle school band student, this sensitive and moving work opens with a chorale played by off-stage brass. A flowing melody stated in the low register is then developed before leading to a brief fanfare-like affirmation. The Korean folk song You and I is briefly quoted before returning to the off-stage brass and calm closing passage. A beautifully scored lyric piece for band. (Extra players are not required for the off-stage parts.) Dur: 4: Score and Parts...$ Score Only... $7.50 Mars (from The Planets) 16 Gustav Holst/arr. Jay Bocook Without question, The Planets has risen to the top of symphonic works of the 20th century. Fraser Linklater Commissioned by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 1998, this dynamic work combines frantic and energy to form the title, speaking volumes to the nature and verve of the character of the music. Following a heart-pounding opening, this brisk piece is comprised of four short melodic ideas tossed from section to section. Enjoying acclaim and prominent performances in the symphonic arena, this work is authentically transcribed by Fraser Linklater and is certain to become an important addition to the repertoire for winds. Premiered at the 2010 ABA National Convention, Crossing Parallels offers a creative tapestry of engaging sounds and textures as it combines elements of both Renaissance and Baroque musical gestures along with contemporary notions of set theory and harmony. The seemingly contradictory nature of the title is reflected in the overlapping and intertwining of thematic ideas vying for attention. Other diverse influences include the World Music-infused jazz of Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek, as well as the symphonies of Shostakovich. This exciting and creative work is written with a consistent rhythmic drive throughout, and features a prominent role for piano. However, he was much admired by J.S. Bach who used examples of Albinoni s music in his teaching, as well as using some of Albinoni s themes as the basis for some of his own pieces. Elegy for Albinoni is a beautiful memorial piece in honor of this musical master, and uses a romantic tone to set the stage for a theme based on one of Albinoni s violin sonatas. A rewarding work! Dur: 3:30 (Grade 2) Score and Parts... $ Score Only... $8.00 Folksong Suite No. 1 and No. 2 Frigyes Hidas Frigyes Hidas ( ) was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles, and his works are the most often performed. His worldwide popularity is based on works such as Balettzene (Ballet music), Vidam zene (Cheerful music), El nem táncolt balett (Undanced ballet), Requiem and Save the Sea. His folk song suites, which are enormously popular in his homeland, are fine examples of Hidas mature style in the genre of folk song arrangements. The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere, while the second, with its recurrent structure, makes use of five melodies, creating a modern harmonic environment around them and thereby highlighting even more the beauty of the melodies. To perform these works effectively, ample technique is required, as well as an ability to shape the music freely. Highly recommended for ensembles with an interest in Hungarian wind music and folklore.
