5 INTRODUCTION Itroductio Welcome to the Rockschool syllabus specificatio for vocals, 2016 editio. This syllabus specificatio is desiged to give teachers, learers ad cadidates practical iformatio o the graded examiatios ru by Rockschool. The Rockschool website, has i-depth iformatio o all aspects of our examiatios icludig examiatio regulatios, detailed markig schemes, assessmet criteria ad free choice piece criteria as well as otated ad audio examples to help you prepare for the examiatio. These sogs should demostrate a comparable level of techical ad musical demad to the pieces give i the set selectios i the grade books which ca be referred to as a idicatio of appropriate level. Cadidates should refer to the Free Choice Piece Criteria available o our website whe accessig the level of a potetial piece, All pieces must be performed to a backig track. Free Choice Pieces must be available i fully otated sheet music ad Cadidates eed to brig a copy of the sheet music for the examier to refer to durig the examiatio. 7 INTRODUCTION MUSICAL INTERPRETATION Musical Iterpretatio is allowed at all grades i both the Grade Exam ad Performace Certificate. Rockschool ecourages idividual musicality, articulatio, expressio ad use of dyamics whe performig. This applies aywhere i the exam other tha the techical exercises where articulatio whe specified must be observed. Cadidates are remided that all musical iterpretatio should be stylistically appropriate. 8 Grade 1 The Grade 1 vocals exam is for cadidates who have mastered the key basic skills i vocal performace. There are two types of exam: Grade Exams ad Performace Certificates. Please see the Examiatios sectio o page 3 for further details. 9 GRADE 1 Grade 1 GRADE EXAMS PREPARED WORK Cadidates will eed to perform three Performace Pieces ad the Techical Exercises for the Grade Exam. These are to be performed at the begiig of the exam ad ca be i either order, at the cadidate s choice. The examier will oly ask for a selectio of the Techical Exercises i the exam. UNPREPARED WORK A Sight Readig test OR a Improvisatio & Iterpretatio test must be completed at the cadidate s choice. This is followed by two Ear Tests: Melodic Recall (Test 1) the Rhythmic Recall (Test 2). The Rhythmic Recall will also require idetificatio of the correct rhythm from two choices give by the examier. For the fial part of the exam, five Geeral Musiciaship Questios will be asked. Four questios will be asked o oe of the pieces performed, (the cadidate will be asked to choose which piece) ad oe questio will be asked o uderstadig of the voice. All questios will be at the examier s choice. 10 GRADE 1 TECHNICAL EXERCISES At Grade 1 there are four groups of Techical Exercises. The examier will ask for a selectio from each group. GROUP A: SCALES Tempo: 70bpm 4/4 sigature The major scale must be prepared. The cadidate may select ay startig ote betwee A E ad may choose to sig alog to a metroome click or to hear four clicks before the test starts. Whichever optio is chose, the startig ote will be heard before the cout starts. This test ca be performed usig ay vocal soud except hummig or whistlig. GROUP B: ARPEGGIOS Tempo: 70bpm 4/4 ad 3/4 sigatures Two differet patters of a major arpeggio eed to be prepared ad the examier will select oe of these to be performed i the exam. This test must be performed to a metroome click ad ay startig ote betwee A E may be selected by the cadidate. The chose startig ote will be played before the cout starts. This test ca be performed usig ay vocal soud except hummig or whistlig. GROUP C: INTERVALS Tempo: 90bpm 4/4 sigature I this group the followig itervals must be prepared: Major 2d iterval Major 3rd iterval The cadidate will be asked to perform oe of these itervals i the exam, as chose by the examier. The examier will choose a startig ote withi the rage of A C (female) ad D-F (male). The cadidate will the be required to sig the root ote followed by the major 2d or major 3rd at the examier s choice. The cadidate may choose to sig alog to a metroome click throughout or to hear four clicks before the test starts. Whichever optio is chose, the startig ote will be heard before the cout starts. This test may be performed usig ay vocal soud except hummig or whistlig. GROUP D: TECHNICAL STUDIES Tempo: bpm 4/4 sigature I this group the followig studies must be prepared: Rhythmic: Rhythmic accuracy Melodic: Dyamic chage The examier will ask the cadidate to perform oe of the above studies i the exam. The examier will decide which, so both must be prepared before the exam. The Rhythmic Study starts with a four-beat cout-i ad cosists of a four-bar rhythm spoke with lyrics. The Melodic Study starts with the root ote followed by a four-beat cout-i. The exercise cosists of a four-bar melody to be sug with lyrics ad a dyamic chage. 11 GRADE 1 SIGHT READING / IMPROVISATION & INTERPRETATION At Grade 1 a choice betwee Sight Readig OR Improvisatio ad Iterpretatio will be offered. A previously usee test will be used i the exam ad a example of this ca be foud i the Grade 1 book. SIGHT READING Key: Female: C major Male: C major Tempo: 70bpm Rage: Up to a Major 3rd At Grade 1 the Sight Readig test cosists of whole otes (semi-breves), half otes (miims) ad quarter otes (crotchets) i 4/4. The test is four bars log ad starts with the root ote. The examier will allow 90 secods preparatio ad will offer the optio of practisig with a metroome click throughout or a four-beat cout-i at the start of the practice. Whichever optio is chose, the practice will start with the examier playig the root ote ad the same choice is available whe performig the test. This test may be performed usig ay vocal soud except hummig or whistlig. IMPROVISATION & INTERPRETATION Key: Female: C major Male: C major Tempo: 70-80bpm At Grade 1 the examier will give the cadidate a chord sequece i the key of C major. The cadidate must improvise a melody over the backig track. The test is four-bars log ad will be heard three s. The first ad secod is for rehearsal ad the third is for the cadidate to perform the fial versio for the exam. Each playthrough will begi with the root ote ad a four-beat cout-i. The backig track is cotiuous throughout, so oce the first playthrough has fiished the root ote ad cout-i of the secod ad third playthroughs will start immediately. 12 GRADE 1 EAR TESTS MELODIC RECALL Tempo: 85bpm The examier will play three cosecutive otes. The cadidate will eed to idetify whether the last two otes are higher or lower i sequece. This meas the cadidate will eed to tell the examier whether the secod ote is higher or lower tha the first, ad whether the third ote is higher or lower tha the secod. The test will be heard twice, each with a four-beat vocal cout-i. RHYTHMIC RECALL Tempo: 90bpm Part 1: Rhythmic Recall The examier will play a two-bar rhythm played o a sigle ote to a drum backig. The test will be heard twice ad each the test is played it is preceded by the root ote ad a four-beat cout-i. There will be a short gap for to practise after each playthrough. Next a vocal cout-i will be heard, after which the rhythm must be sug back. For this exercise da or ba vocal souds must be used. It is acceptable to sig over the track as it is beig played as well as practisig after the first two playthroughs. The legth of available after the secod playthrough is pre-recorded o the audio track so the cout-i may begi while the cadidate is still practisig. The test is made up of quarter otes (crotchets), eighth otes (quavers) ad equivalet rests. 13 GRADE 1 GENERAL MUSICIANSHIP QUESTIONS I this part of the exam five questios will be asked. Four of these questios will be about geeral music kowledge ad the fifth questio will be about the voice. MUSIC KNOWLEDGE Part 1: Geeral Music Kowledge The examier will ask four music kowledge questios. The questios will be based o oe of the pieces (icludig Free Choice Pieces) performed by the cadidate i the exam. The cadidate ca choose which oe. If there are hadwritte otes o the piece chose, the examier may ask the cadidate to choose a alterative. The cadidate will be asked to idetify: The treble clef The sigature Whole (semi-breve), half (miim), quarter (crotchet) ad eighth (quaver) ote values A rest i the piece VOICE Part 2: Your Voice The examier will also ask oe questio about the voice. Brief demostratios to assist aswers are acceptable. Cadidates will be asked oe of the followig questios: Where is your diaphragm? Where is your laryx? What is the differece betwee head voice ad chest voice? Why is it importat to warm up before sigig? PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE The Grade 1 exam lasts 25 miutes ad the cadidate chooses to sig five pieces oly.
