2 Espoo International Harp Symposium 2010 Espoo Music Institute Harp Students Support Association will organize the first international Espoo Harp Symposium on October 22nd - 24th at Espoo Cultural Centre. This is a continuation of the first nationwide Espoo Harp Symposium We have great honour to represent perhaps the most important international names of the harp pedagogy as teachers, prof. Susann McDonald (Indiana University School of Music) and Linda Wood Rollo. This symposium aims to gather domestic and foreign harp friends from the very smallest harp students to the advanced students as well as harp professionals and others interested in harps into the beautiful facilities of Espoo Cultural Centre. Harp symposium will provide: Masterclasses and private harp lessons prof. Susann McDonald, Indiana University School of Music & Linda Wood Rollo Pedagogical session for teachers and students prof. Susann McDonald Easy harp maintenance for the harpist master harp technician Kurt Berg Coaching for performing situations lecturer of performance coaching, Ph.D. Päivi Arjas, Sibelius Academy Concerts harp-organ duo Kirsi Kiviharju & Pétur Sakari folk-harpist Salla Hakkola masterclass closing concert Espoo Harp Symposium is organized by Espoo Music Institute (EMO) Harp Students Support Association. This association is established five years ago, according to proposal of former Espoo Music Institute Principal, Councelor of Education Timo Veijola. Kirsi Kiviharju have been the Chairman of the EMO Harp Students Support Association from the beginning. 3 Harp symposium will provide Masterclass, prof. Susann McDonald & Linda Wood Rollo The masterclass is intended from the beginners to the advanced students. In case of numerous students Linda Wood Rollo will teach the young students and Susann McDonald more advanced students. If there will be less participants, these pedagogies will have a common masterclass for all students. McDonald and Wood Rollo have used this method worldwide for decades. During the masterclass, all participants are present at the same time, and each of the students will play their programme in turns and practice the pieces with these harp artists. The prepared pieces should be quite much ready, and able to be performed memorized in the closing concert. Decisions about the pieces selected for the concert will be done by prof. McDonald. Education in English, translated to Finnish. Private Harp Lessons, prof. Susann McDonald & Linda Wood Rollo Possibility for private harp lessons on Friday (McDonald or Wood Rollo). Education in English, and if needed, translated to Finnish. Pedagogical session for teachers and students, prof. Susann McDonald Prof. McDonald deals with the subjects of Practising, Memorization Techniques, Tone Quality and Performance Qualities. This lecture is based on McDonald s and Wood Rollo s book Harp for Today: A Universal Method for the Harp. This book and the CD s of Susann McDonald may be available for purchase during the symposium. Education in English, translated to Finnish. Easy harp maintenance for the harpist, Kurt Berg Master harp technician, Kurt Berg, will instruct easy ways to ensure the well-being of your own harp to the parents and harp students. Education in English, translated to Finnish. Note! Kurt Berg will requlate harps from Monday to Thursday Oct 18th-22nd.at Espoo Cultural Centre, at home or at other institutions. Mastering a Performance Situation / Yes, I Know How to Perform Music!, Ph.D. Päivi Arjas Ph.D. Päivi Arjas, a Finnish pioner in learning and performance coaching, will quide the harpists of different ages to controlled presentations. Coaching for performing situations is intended from the age of 15 and above and Hey, I can perform! to the students less than 15 years old. Education in English and Finnish. 4 Teachers Susann McDonald is acknowledged as one of the world s leading harpists and teachers. She was a student of Henriette Renié and Lily Laskine and was the first American to receive the Première Prix in harp from the Paris Conservatory. Susann McDonald holds the title of Distinguished Professor of Music at Indiana University, where she chairs the largest harp department in the world. She also chaired the harp department at The Juilliard School for ten years. Her students continue to be among the leading teachers and orchestral harpists in the world as well as winners of national and international competitions. Susann McDonald is Artistic Director of the World Harp Congress and Founder and Artistic Director of the USA International Harp Competition. Linda Wood Rollo is a well-known teacher, composer and arranger of harp music. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Redlands and a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California. She has taught on the harp faculties of Indiana University, The Ursuline School of Music and Drama, San Francisco State University, Dominican College and San Domenico School for Girls. She toured under the auspices of Columbia Artists both with orchestra and as a soloist for many years and served as Artist in Residence at the University of Surrey, England. Her honors and awards include the World Harp Congress Award of Recognition, the Distinguished Alumni Award (University of Redlands) and the Adolf Kodolfsky Performance Grant (USC). Kurt Berg has been a harp technician since He first worked on Troubador and pedal harps at Lyon & Healy during college and pedal harps after completing a BA in Music Theory and Composition at Western Illinois University in At L&H, Kurt was one of four technicians regulating their worldwide production. In 1984, Kurt left the harp world and entered the US Air Force as a Saxophonist and music copyist. Upon completion of his four year tour of duty, Kurt joined the VENUS Harp family. Since 1988, he has been Chief Harp Technician at VENUS Harps. Beginning in 1989, Kurt began traveling the United States, servicing all makes and models of harps while also regulating harps in the factory. In 1992, Kurt added Europe to his travels and has been working on harps there and in Mexico, Hong Kong and South America. As a saxophonist, Kurt has worked with many notable artists such as Maynard Ferguson, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, Nancy Wilson and many others. He continues to juggle his regulation schedule around the world with saxophone performances at home in Chicago. Päivi Arjas, born in Helsinki Finland, studied music education at the University of Jyväskylä (Ph.D. 2002) and violoncello at the Conservatoire of Kuopio (Diploma 1993). She is working at the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland) as lecturer of performance coaching. Earlier she worked as cello teacher at The Finnish Conservatoire, (Jyväskylä), in several music schools and at the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences. She has given lessons as a supervisor of pedagogy at the Jyväskylä Teacher Education College and has had tasks as an expert at the Union of the Finnish Schools of Music and ISME. She has given courses about performance coaching to orchestras and in teacher training programs in several music schools. She has also given radio- and TV interviews (the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation) and has been a member of the AEC Polifonia pre-college-working group, has worked as an exchange teacher at the Sokrates project and has taken part in many international music conferences. She has published books about performance anxiety and mental training for musicians. She is also a member of the ESTA Finland board, chair of the Sibelius Academy Lecturers Association and a board member of the Association of the Lecturers of the Capital Region Universities.
5 . Photo: Heikki Tuuli Kirsi Kiviharju is known as an adventurous harpist always on the lookout something new. Her performances are characterized by sensitive interpretations and her ability to conjure a rich and powerful sound from her instrument. She is particularly appreciated for her performances of French music. She completed her harp diploma and her Master of Music degree at the Sibelius Academy in 1995, having previously gratuaded as a piano teacher. She continued her harp studies with Susann McDonald (USA) and Willy Postma (Norway). Today Kirsi Kiviharju is a freelance chamber musician and soloist, and she also teaches the harp at the Sibelius Academy and at the Espoo Music Institute. She played principal harp with the Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera and with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. She also records harp music regularly for the Finnish Broadcasting Company. She has collaborated with organist Kalevi Kiviniemi for twelve years, giving recitals and releasing three joint discs of French music, Harp and Organ, Aria and Majestic. She and Kiviniemi share a love for French music in particular. Pia Freund is also one of her long-standing partners, with whom she has performed a wide range of repertoire from the 17th century to the present. They have also given children's concerts together, and they have made radio recordings and a Christmas disc entitled Hosanna in Excelsis. The co-operation with the young organist Pétur Sakari has started this year. Though they have already had several concerts together, e.g. during the international Lahti Organ Festival. Kirsi Kiviharju has performed in many countires in Europe, at latest in May during the international Schwarzwald Music Festival earning excellent critics. She is a member of the Finnish Harpist Association, the World harp Congress and the Finnish Soloists' Association. Kiviharju playes a Venus Diplomat Grand Concert harp made in the USA. Salla Hakkola is a folk-harpist, singer and composer, graduated from Sibelius- Academy (Helsinki, Finland) in She works as both folk-harpist singer and composer in the fields of modern art music, folk music and rhythm music. Salla s compositions and arrangements have been performed by herself and by other musicians in various festivals of different music traditions such as Musica Nova, Contemporary Art Music Festival in Helsinki, Art Goes Kapakka- festival in Helsinki, Haapavesi Folk - festival in Haapavesi, Ketchum Arts Festival and Burley International Folk Music and Dance Festival in Idaho, USA. She has performed and worked with classically trained musicians as well as musicians from folk- or jazz- tradition, and has composed music for dancers and films. Having lived and studied also in Mexico City, she learned the Paraguayan harp and other styles of South-American music and rhythms such as Venezuelan joropo, Mexican jarocho and Cuban salsa. Salla continues her contemporary music Composition studies with Eero Hämeenniemi in Helsinki. In his family of musicians Pétur Sakari was surrounded by music from early on. When he was three years old he started cello lessons under Anja Maja. Around the same time he heard an organ concert in Rhodes, Greece. When the family returned home Pétur sat down at the piano and started playing, but soon became frustrated at not finding the bass pedals in the instrument. The family bought a home organ console and the boy continued making music on both instruments. At the age of eight he started organ studies under Pekka Suikkanen and four years later Tuomas Karjalainen become his teacher. The following year he started cello lessons at Helsinki Conservatory under Sami Mäkelä. In 2005, at the age of 13, Pétur Sakari gave his first organ concert in Loppi, Finland and the following year he was invited to give a concert at the Turku Organ Festival. He was awarded the title of Young Artist of the Year during the 2009 Lahti International Organ Festival. The same year he made a study trip to Paris with Kalevi Kiviniemi as his guide and mentor. Mr. Kiviniemi has been a great role model and an important mentor to Pétur. Pétur Sakari has been a soloist with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and Pori Sinfonietta. Pétur recorded his first solo CD in the Central Pori church where he gave a concert at the Pori Organ festival 2010 as the Young Artist of the Year. Nowadays Pétur Sakari studies organ in Finland under Tuomas Karjalainen and in Paris under Thierry Escaich (improvisation) and Vincent Warnier (repertoire).
