1 Visual Art Audition Session Times: 4pm or 5:30 pm Visual Art auditions consist of a review of current work and a drawing exercise during the audition. General guidelines: Works must be NO LARGER than 18x24. DO NOT submit cartoons, anime, or unfinished work. DO NOT SUBMIT ACTUAL SCULPTURE-use photos ONLY. Each piece must be labeled with student name & current school. Part 1: 2 Finished Works Assemble your best art work; then use the checklist below to select appropriate entries for your portfolio. ALL WORK MUST HAVE BEEN CREATED WITHIN THE PAST YEAR. Your portfolio must include any of the following in any combination for a total of 2 pieces. Minimum of one (up to two) 2-D pieces (drawing, painting, print, collage, etc.) Optional: one 3-D piece (clay, fiber, metal, wood, wire, paper, etc.) represented as photographs of each sculpture, mounted and presented in the portfolio. NO ACTUAL SCULPTURES. Demonstrate the RANGE of your abilities, use of media, and techniques. Part 2: On Site Drawing During your audition, you will receive brief instruction on drawing with contour lines. Then you will be asked to draw an object using only contour lines. That drawing will be assessed as the 3 rd piece of artwork for your audition.

2 Chorus Chorus auditions consist of the student singing, solo, the first verse of America the Beautiful. Students will also repeat melodic and rhythmic patterns. General guidelines: If you have previous musical experience, that s great. If not, that s also great we are here to help you feel comfortable and totally within your element! Performance Audition: America the Beautiful will be accompanied in the key of B-Flat. Melodic and rhythmic patterns will demonstrate the student s level of musicianship. The instructor will sing/chant a simple pattern and the student will repeat the pattern.

3 Dance Dance auditions consist of a warm-up at the barre and learning a 48 count dance phrase during the audition which will be performed at the end of the audition. General guidelines: Students need to wear clothes that they are able to move in easily. NO JEANS! Previous dance knowledge/training is NOT required. Part 1: Warm-Up and Barre Work During this part of the audition, students will participate in a warm-up at the ballet barre. Students will use this to warm-up their bodies to prevent any injuries from happening. The movement taught will be consistent with that of Ballet. The barre warm-up will be led by one of the SAA Dance Instructors. Part 2: Learning a Dance Phrase At this time, the students will learn a 48 count dance phrase/combination taught by one of the SAA Dance Instructors. This dance phrase will then be performed after the students have had time to practice. The dance phrase will either be in the style of Jazz or Modern(Lyrical).

4 Band Band auditions consist of an aural skills and rhythmic skills test. Part 1: 2 Aural Skills Student will listen to two pitches and determine the relationship between them Each example will be one of three options 1. 2 nd pitch is the same as the 1 st pitch 2. 2 nd pitch is higher than the 1 st pitch 3. 2 nd pitch is lower than the 1 st pitch Part 2: Rhythmic skills Student will listen to a clapped rhythm and repeat it back through clapping *A keyboard will be available for those students interested in displaying their instrumental music abilities by performing a student-chosen prepared piano piece.

5 Strings Audition Session Times: 4pm or 5:30 pm Orchestra auditions will consist of four parts. Part 1: D Major Scale Start on the open D string and go to the D note on the A string-play each note twice using quarter notes. Ex: DD, EE, F#F#, GG, AA, BB, C#C#, DD, C#C#, BB, AA, GG, F#F#, EE, DD Part 2: Prepared Piece Play one exercise from your current strings method book or a song you have learned for a recent concert. Part 3: Sight Reading This will be a short piece of music (between 4-8 measures in length) that will be given to the student at the audition). Part 4: Interview This will consist of a few, short questions related to your music experience thus far and why you would like to come to Southwood Academy of the Arts.

6 Theatre Theatre auditions will consist of improvisational exercises and a cold reading. Students will be critiqued on projection, characterization, energy, enthusiasm, and creativity. On Site Audition: During your audition, you will begin by participating in improvisational excercises. Then you will be asked to choose a poem by Shel Silverstein to perform as a cold reading. Participation in improvisational exercises and the cold reading performance will be assessed for your audition.
