2 National Youth and Education Trust The National Youth and Education Trust is the primary resource for youth and education funding at the National Arts Centre. Supporters of the Trust help the National Arts Centre pursue priority initiatives through the performing arts that nurture and develop the creativity of young people in all regions across Canada, and support the educators and artists who challenge and encourage them. The National Youth and Education Trust funds programs such as masterclasses, internships and training programs for emerging artists, as well as student matinees, open rehearsals and subsidized tickets to build young audiences. 4 Performance Hall Etiquette Teachers Help us ensure that everyone enjoys the performance! As a teacher bringing your students to a performance at the National Arts Centre, please keep in mind that you are responsible for the behaviour of your students. It is up to you to ensure that the students behave in a respectful and attentive manner towards the performers on stage as well as NAC staff. Use the guidelines below to brief your students about behaviour in the performance hall before you attend your NAC performance. Performers on stage rely on the audience for the energy to perform: audiences need to be attentive, quiet and respectful in order to help create the magic of live performance. Performers can see and hear everything that you do, just as you can see and hear everything that they do, so: Please save your snacks, drinks, candies and gum for another time the performance hall is no place for eating and drinking. Please discuss what you like and dislike about a performance but definitely do it after you leave the hall, not during the performance. It is important that you be comfortable in your seat in the hall but please don t leave your seat once the performance has started. It s distracting to those on stage. Be sure to turn off cell phones, pagers and anything that beeps before you enter the hall. Musicians love to have their performance acknowledged by your applause, but remember to wait until the whole piece is over. Some composers choose to write music in several movements. It may seem like the end of the piece when the performers come to the end of a movement, but often a piece of music is made up of several movements. If you get confused about when a piece of music is finished, watch the performers on stage you ll be sure to know when the piece is over when the conductor turns and faces the audience. Remember that there are a lot of people who work very hard to put on a performance: not just actors, dancers and musicians, but administrators, front-of-house and technical staff. Everyone will have a different opinion of what they see on stage, but consider that constructive criticism is always appreciated more than purely negative criticism. Through the performing arts we can explore other points of view, learn new and different things about ourselves and about others. Everyone who views a performance will experience it in a different way. It is important to respect this process of exploration in yourselves and those around you. 4

Experience the best of dance and an all-canadian repertoire of educational activities for students, including two matinees by our nation s most enduring companies and dance artists. We begin with educational opportunities for high schools by acclaimed choreographer Christopher House and his company, Toronto Dance Theatre. Then a special holiday treat returns with Nutcracker, an enchanting ballet classic since its debut in December The Royal Winnipeg Ballet s popular set-in-canada version features music performed by the National Arts Centre Orchestra. And in March, join us as the first modern dance recipient to be decorated with the Order of Canada, our beloved Margie Gillis, provides inspiration and learning on her original style, described as dancing from the inside out. Margie is a Canadian dance icon who has been interpreting universal themes of human emotion through dance for 36 years. We look forward to celebrating our 40 th anniversary and these great Canadian dance experiences by welcoming you and your students to the NAC. Cathy Levy Dance Producer Study Guides A study guide will be mailed approximately three weeks before the performance, after confirmation of group reservation. This guide will help you prepare your students for the performance, with background information on the choreographer and dance company, themes of the work and practical classroom activities. Group Sales for Evening Shows If you re planning a class trip months in advance, or if you would like your students to attend multiple evening dance shows at the NAC, contact the National Arts Centre s group sales team. Students will receive 50% off regular ticket prices. Two adults per twenty students will also receive the student discount. Nutcracker features Filbert the dancing bear, cavorting mice, a sugarplum fairy, and a magically growing Christmas tree all wrapped in a turn-of-the-century Canadian setting. Featuring choreography by Nina Menon and Galina Yordanova, scenery by Brian Perchaluk, 175 original costumes by Paul Daigle, Tchaikovsky s timeless music, and dozens of local children. Youth Focus Group for Dance The Dance Department formed its first Youth Focus Group in Every year since then, a new group of teens has had the incredible opportunity of gaining an in-depth perspective on dance and the performing arts and building appreciation and interest in dance for a new generation. The NAC Youth Focus Group for Dance offers participants: Lively discussion about and exposure to professional theatrical dance that will help deepen an appreciation for the art form; A chance to communicate about one s personal aesthetics and meet renowned dance artists performing at the NAC; An opportunity to become an ambassador for dance in their school; Tickets to a selection of dance performances of all styles to attend with the group. Teachers, recommend a student aged 14 to 17 for the NAC Youth Focus Group for Dance. Six students will be chosen. 11 Music 3 rd Annual NAC Orchestra Teachers Information Night Wednesday, September 30 th, 2009 GRADE 7 12 The Outstanding Oscar Peterson Tommy Banks, conductor A member of jazz royalty, the legendary Oscar Peterson was nicknamed the Maharaja of the Keyboard by none other than Duke Ellington. We pay tribute to one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, a performer whose technical brilliance astonished audiences the world over, and a man who inspired generations of musicians. His 65-year career took him from his Montreal roots to Carnegie Hall and back, and he remains a source of pride for Canada. Pianist Oliver Jones, and vocalists Ranee Lee and 15-year-old Nikki Yanofsky join the NAC Orchestra in a concert commemorating Oscar Peterson. Katie Malloch of CBC Radio s Tonic hosts. 15 Music Student Open Rehearsals GRADE 8 12 Student Open Rehearsals a unique opportunity to hear the National Arts Centre Orchestra at work in rehearsal with some of the world s finest conductors and soloists, and to meet some of the musicians in person. Pinchas Zukerman with the NAC Orchestra Open Rehearsals are generally held on Wednesday or Thursday mornings (see dates on p ). During the rehearsals, the Orchestra will be preparing for the concerts taking place the same week. Therefore, the students will hear only one or two of the pieces listed on the program. Please remember that the musicians are hard at work during these rehearsals, and noise or talking can disturb their concentration. When possible, a volunteer will present a short introduction about the musicians and pieces featured on the day s program. For further preparation, we encourage you to visit Music where your students can learn more about the musicians behind the instruments. This outreach program brings musical ensembles as well as individual musicians into the schools to perform and instruct on a variety of orchestral instruments. For additional learning opportunities, visit Music which features music clips, virtual instruments, interviews with musicians and many more educational games and activities. Ensembles Winds, brass, strings and percussion are sections of the orchestra that you can hear live in your school. Seven different combinations of musical instruments are available to perform for your students a variety of engaging concert programs that include the music of the past and the present. In preparation for the performance at your school, the NAC will provide you with study materials. 22 English Theatre Secondary and Post-Secondary Matinees Welcome to the 40 th Anniversary Season of English Theatre at Canada s National Arts Centre. This season we celebrate the spirit of "play" in a program featuring a selection of the very best in Canadian, international and classical plays. Variety is the key to this season, with something truly for everyone. In October, we kick off our season with the most successful Canadian musical in Broadway history, The Drowsy Chaperone, winner of Five Tony Awards in 2006! Here is a musical that pays tribute to the great era of 1920s musical comedies, but with a decidedly modern twist. For Christmas we are producing our own production of Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, featuring the 40 th Anniversary National Arts Centre English Theatre Acting Company, a group of 18 of Canada s finest actors in residence at the NAC. This production will be a faithful re-telling of the Dickens story, performed in period costume on the full Shakespearean thrust stage. Student matinees are for both secondary and elementary students (grade four and up). In January, the same actors will perform in Bertolt Brecht s 20 th century masterpiece, Mother Courage and Her Children, featuring songs by Brecht, Paul Dessau and Kurt Weil. Brecht s great anti-war epic, is a timely look at war and its cost on a family. In February we are presenting the world premiere of a new play by Joanna McClelland Glass, Mrs. Dexter and Her Daily, and finally we are completing the season with one of my favourite Shakespearean Comedies, The Comedy of Errors. The student matinee includes a special in-school pre-performance workshop with Company member actor/educator nisha ahuja. What a perfect play to introduce your students to Shakespeare - simple direct prose, really approachable verse, and within it the seeds for so many ideas that blossom in his later plays. Our Studio series looks at the "inter-play" of people and place with four wonderful productions from four unusual places. Elephant Wake from Saskatchewan looks at the last days of a small French-speaking community and its prosperous anglophone neighbour. Night is a special theatrical examination of 24-hour darkness set in Pond Inlet, Nunavut, Where the Blood Mixes from Lytton, British Columbia looks at a modern First Nations family and the staggering effects of the residential school system, and on the NAC Fourth Stage A Place to Call Home written and performed by Pat Braden from Yellowknife features stories and songs about coming of age in a small town in Canada s North. Braden speaks to places such as the family cabin where he grew up and the shacks and shanties of the Woodyard in the old town of Yellowknife, describing them within the context of the northern lights, the bitter cold, the endless days of summer and the migrations marking the passing of the seasons. Pre- or Post-Performance Workshops Whether delivered in your classroom or at the NAC, these workshops offer enriched learning opportunities for students to delve deeper into the world of the play they ll be seeing or have just seen. Workshops help students better understand the language of the theatre, and the techniques and excitement of creating theatre. Students, having worked on a scene or discussed a theme, feel more connected and engaged with the performance. When possible, actors performing in the play teach these workshops, allowing students to learn first-hand about the rehearsal process and the creation of the piece. The workshops include a question and answer session with the actors. Spend a day at the NAC Students can participate in a workshop, a backstage visit and attend a matinee all in the same day. Skill Building Workshops are delivered by experienced theatre professionals who have an interest in working with young people. The itinerary may include a visit to the shops (props, scenery and wardrobe), tours of the four stages at the NAC, and/or a look at the vomitory, dressing rooms and Green Room. Professional Development for Teachers Shakespeare If you haven t previously participated in one our Shakespeare PD workshops yet this is an absolute must! If you re already a fan we welcome you back. NAC English Theatre Artistic Director Peter Hinton once again teaches this inspiring and outstanding professional development workshop on Shakespeare for teachers. 32 English Theatre Skill-building Workshops for Teachers Organize your own professional development workshop based on your needs. For generalists or specialists, elementary or secondary teachers, these workshops provide you with important information and help you brush up on your skills. Offered either at the NAC or your school, and taught by an actor from the NAC English Acting Company when available. March Break Program This free program is intended for students with a strong desire to pursue their interest in theatre, but who do not have access to theatre training due to financial, logistical, or family difficulties. This intensive one-week theatre training program, March 15-19, 2010, provides students aged 15 to 19 with the opportunity to spend a week at the NAC seriously studying theatre. NAC English Acting Company member nisha ahuja, along with several other Company members, will lead the students through skill-based actor training workshops in voice, text, and movement. Participants are accepted on the recommendation of teachers and social/youth workers, and must undergo an interview process. Making payment Upon receipt of your order at the NAC, you will be sent an invoice by mail confirming the number of tickets ordered (where applicable), performance date and time, amount payable, and a deadline by which you must remit payment. Immediately upon receiving your invoice, please check that your order is correct. Please return one copy of your invoice with your payment. We will accept one method of payment only for the total amount, by credit card (American Express, VISA, MasterCard), cash, money order or cheque. Latecomers Latecomers will be admitted (by NAC ushers) only at a suitable break in the performance. Ticket policy National Arts Centre policy requires that every person have a ticket in order to be admitted to a performance. This policy applies to everyone, including children and infants and also to adults accompanying groups to student matinees. A group consists of 10 students or more. The National Arts Centre reserves the right to limit the number of adults admitted to student matinees.
