All screenwriting, directing, camera/filming and editing must be dne by the student prducer. PwerPint presentatins are prhibited. Multimedia: Uses a cmbinatin f different cntents (text, audi, still images, animatin, etc.). An explanatin f the stryline and/r the significance f the film style might be a useful additin t the artist statement. Authrs submit a single literary wrk, handwritten r typed, using grade-apprpriate grammar, punctuatin and spelling. Cllectins f literary wrk (such as pems and shrt stries) are nt accepted. Reflect n the Theme: Let Yur Imaginatin Fly Cnsider the fllwing literary styles t prtray yur riginal wrk f fictin r nnfictin: Prse, petry, drama (screen play and play script), reflective essay, narrative, r shrt stry. An explanatin f the stryline and/r the significance f the literature style might be a useful additin t the artist statement. Whether an entry displays frmal writing technique r a simple apprach, it will be judged primarily n hw well the student uses his r her artistic visin t prtray the theme, riginality and creativity. Spken wrd audi recrdings and illustrated entries including bks with pictures drawn by the student authr are acceptable; hwever, nly literary cntent is judged. Acceptable Use f Type, Dictatin and Translatin: Be typed by anther persn as lng as the riginal wrk r a cpy f the riginal wrk is attached. Be dictated t anther persn and printed r typed in exact wrds as spken by the student if the student is in pre-schl, kindergarten r 1st grade. (Transcribers shuld make every attempt t retain the same level f language and accuracy that is reflected in the student s riginal wrk). Students fr whm English is nt their first language may submit literature entries in their wn language. An interpretive translatin in English must accmpany the entry. 4 MUSIC COMPOSITION is the prcess f creating a new piece f music. The cmpser (student submitting entry) is a persn wh expresses their wn thughts and ideas thrugh the use f sund. The student cmpser may submit an entry perfrmed by an individual r grup and/r make use f a sund library generated perfrmance f a cmpsed scre. Student cmpsers are nt required t perfrm their cmpsitin. Middle and high schl grade divisins require music scre/tablature/ntatin, either traditinal r tablature. Reflect n the Theme: Let Yur Imaginatin Fly Cnsider the fllwing musical styles and instruments t prtray yur riginal cmpsitin: A cappella, blues, chral, cuntry, electrnic, hip hp, jazz, wrld music, musical, rchestral, pp, R&B, religius, rck, symphnic/cncert band and traditinal. All instruments, sunds, styles and cmbinatins are accepted. Sftware may be used t prduce an audi recrding that des nt include cmmercially pre-prgrammed imprted MIDI r ther surce files. Entries cntaining algrithmic cmpsitin techniques are nt accepted. 5 PHOTOGRAPHY is the prcess f creating an image. The phtgrapher (student submitting entry) is a persn wh captures their wn thughts and ideas with a camera. By fcusing n bjects using varius lenses, filters and light surces, phtgraphers may demnstrate the use f phtgraphic techniques cnventinally r digitally. Reflect n the Theme: Let Yur Imaginatin Fly Accepted frms f phtgraphy include: A single pht, panramic, phtmntage (ne seamless print f multiple riginal phts), a multiple expsure, negative sandwich r phtgram. Original black-and-white and clr images are accepted. Nn-accepted frms f phtgraphy include: Entries with added graphics ver the image, including lettering, are nt accepted. Original film (negatives r transparencies) and multidimensinal pieces are nt accepted. Cnsider use f bjects, lighting and the lcatin t shw a clear relatin f the pht t the theme. An explanatin f the phtgraphy prcess/frm might be a useful additin t the artist statement. Whether an entry displays use f technlgies r a simple apprach, it will be judged primarily n hw well the student uses his r her artistic visin t prtray the theme, riginality and creativity. 6 Student Eligibility. The Natinal PTA Special Artist Divisin is an ptin fr students with disabilities wh receive services under IDEA r Sectin 504 t have the pprtunity and accmmdatins they may need in rder t participate fully in the prgram. The Special Artist Divisin ffers mdified rules and guidelines t ensure that every student has the chance t be part f the Natinal PTA Reflectins prgram. Wh qualifies as a disabled individual under the law? The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines an individual with a disability as a persn wh: (1) Has a physical r mental impairment that substantially limits ne r mre f the majr life activities f that persn; (2) Has a recrd f such an impairment; r (3) Is regarded as having such impairment. Student Entry Prcess: Students wh identify as having a disability have tw ways t enter the Natinal PTA Reflectins Prgram. Optin 1: Enter in Traditinal Grade Divisins: Regardless f age, students with special needs may enter in the grade divisin mst clsely aligned t their functinal abilities. Students may nt receive assistance ther than that which is allwed fr all children. The divisins are as fllws: Primary (preschl grade 2); Intermediate (grades 3-5); Middle Schl (grades 6-8); High Schl (grades 9-12). Students are recgnized and awarded prizes as part f the general student ppulatin withut regard t special needs r challenges. Optin 2: Enter in Special Artist Divisin: Qualifying students entering the Special Artist Divisin create their wn artwrk, but may receive nn-artistic accmmdatin and assistance frm an adult. Parent/legal guardian signature is required. Students are recgnized and awarded prizes as part f the Special Artist Divisin. Special Artist Accmmdatins and Guidelines. Special artists shuld fllw the general rules and guidelines utlined in the arts categry student rules specific t their submissins, mdified nly by accmmdatins fr individuals with disabilities. The accmmdatin, in general, shuld be bth specific and limited t the student s disability. Allwable Accmmdatins: Given the diverse range f physical and mental disabilities that exist, it wuld be impssible t utline specific accmmdatins fr each and every disability, but the fllwing prvides a nn-exhaustive list f allwable accmmdatins: The Special Artist Divisin will nt be divided by age r traditinal schl grade level. Use f adaptive technlgy is allwed. All submissins must be slely created by the special artist. Hwever, a parent, teacher r ther adult may assist the special artist with typing, hlding a camera, etc. Accmmdatins that are Nt Allwed: Individuals prviding assistance t special artists may nt, in any way, invlve themselves in the actual artistic prcess by: Persnally selecting a title fr artwrk. Writing, editing r interpreting a student s artist statement, stry, petry r script. Chregraphing a dance, cmpsing music r writing lyrics. Drawing, painting r persnally creating a visual arts submissin, chsing a camera angle, etc. The Special Artist Divisin f the Natinal PTA Reflectins prgram is ptinal at state and lcal levels. Please check with yur state PTA regarding availability in yur state f residence.

7 VISUAL ARTS include many art frms that are visual in nature. The artist (student submitting entry) is a persn wh captures their wn thughts and ideas t create a visual piece f art. Accepted frms f visual art include: Architecture (2D/3D), carpentry, ceramics, cllages, phtgraphic cllages (multiple phts cut/pasted), cmputer-generated image, crafts, design, diramas, drawing, fiber wrk, jewelry, kites, metal etching/punch wrk, mbiles, painting, printmaking, sculpture and wind chimes. Paper entries must be munted n sturdy material and nt exceed 3/8 thick. 3D artwrk (e.g. sculpture) Dimensins must nt exceed 12x12x12 inches. Must include packaging materials and 3 phts f the entry (a cmbinatin f angles) fr judging and ID purpses (entries that require assembling/repairing frm transprting will be disqualified). Framed artwrk and artwrk cntaining lse materials is nt accepted. Matting is accepted. Label back f entry/entry packaging with student name, title f artwrk, arts categry and divisin. Submit artwrk and student entry frm accrding t yur PTA s instructins. State Specific Instructins: All participants must als fllw Official Rules fr Participatin.
