2 Message from the Head of Delegation Dr. Marcus Cornaro On 9 May each year, citizens of the European Union commemorate Europe Day, this being the day in 1950 when a call was made for Europeans to put their differences aside and work together towards a peaceful and prosperous future. In South Africa, the Delegation of the European Union makes use of this annual occasion not only to mark this moment in history but more widely to highlight the positive and ever-evolving relations between South Africa and the European Union. This year, in an inspiring initiative with musician and music producer, Itu Tshabane we are proud to present on Europe Day 2017, the EU Friendship Party, a collaborative outreach in association with numerous Pretoria-based musicians. 4 DONOVAN YAARDS Donovan Yaards was born and raised in Kimberley. He graduated from Tshwane University of Technology where he achieved a National Diploma in Musical Theatre in During his studies he developed a professional relationship with Dantanio Goodman for whom he choreographed, danced and performed as backup singer. After graduating Donovan, also worked for acclaimed poet, director, writer, producer and performer Napo Masheane. From , he returned to Kimberley where amongst others he taught dance at Saint Patrick s College and Saint Cyprian Grammar School. He founded the singing-dancing duo Silhouette and choreographed and directed Pop Idols finalist and actress Gail Nkoane. The highlight of his career in Silhouette was opening for international singing sensation Ciara at the annual Maloof Money Cup in Kimberley. In 2014 and 215 he gained international experience as a singer-dancer in Turkey before returning to Gauteng co-found Retro Broadway, an initiative that annually creates a platform for upcoming artists to perform their original work. He also became a member of a boy group called Black Yoghurt under the direction and management of Owen Lonzar. 5 FingerPrint5 FingerPrint5 is a five-piece band established in 2012 by lead vocalist, Nkamogeleng Lebeloane from Shakung. The other members of the band comprise of second vocalist, Gina Mabasa from Soshanguve, Lead guitarist, Bongani Phiri from Thembisa, Bass guitarist, Shana from Ga-Rankuwa and Drummer, Moshe Matseke from Mamelodi. The band prides itself in its "indigenous African meets neo-jazz sound", resulting in a genre called Root Soul. Our music is inspired by the children of Africa, equal rights and justice. They sing in African languages including Setswana to Twi. This highly adaptable band has some 15 original compositions. Their songs about children and the innocent in children dominate their extended play recordings. Their name FingerPrint5 alludes to their uniqueness as a fingerprint is something that cannot be shared and is distinctive. Their mission is to African pride, black consciousness and to encourage and inspire people especially the young. Through music, they seek to challenge the unacceptable to decolonise beauty to encourage artists appreciate and respect each other and to build a legacy of soulful artistry. 6 Itu Tshabane Itu Tshabane is a South African singer-songwriter known for his ability to raise goosebumps with his vocal magic. His inspiration is derived from legendary artists such as Linda Kekana, Jonathan Butler, Sam Smith, Emile Sande and John Legend to name a few. His unique contemporary style can be described as a fusion of Afro-pop, R&B, Soul and Jazz. Born in 1982, singer-songwriter Itu grew up in South Africa and left for the UK where he met highly talented musicians and producer Ewan Macaulay. R&B / Soul and African music have always been elements of Itu s unique musical sound. During his time in the UK he learnt the art of performance and entertainment. Itu, a vibrant child, was raised by his mother in the dusty town of Atteridgeville in Pretoria, South Africa. He is the first-born of three boys and his home is a musical empire rich with harmony. It is indeed true that music is in the genes - his mother is a queen of harmony and she raised a man who respects art and vision. In 2015 he launched his first hit single Heal live on Metro FM featuring a full band and choir ensemble. A successful 6-track EP entitled Stand Up Tall followed shortly thereafter. It has been well-received by his fans and continues to receive airplay on several major radio stations. Gigs and interviews are ever-present fixtures on Itu s calendar. Itu has set his sights on the SAMAs and MetroFM music awards, to name a few. He is working hard to expand his musical brand both locally and abroad. He is currently working with his talented creative team to put the final touches on his debut artist album, which promises to deliver the freshest and catchiest grooves this side of the equator! 7 MUSIC FLAIR Music Flair is an afro-soul-jazz band, situated in Pretoria and founded in March They are a group of diverse aspiring artists and seek to deliver their product in an innovated way. This 4-piece band consists of 1 keyboardist, bass guitarist, percussionist, drummer, 3 vocalists and our sound engineer. They are currently in the process of recording their first extended play (EP) album called Humble Beginnings at the SABC studios in Johannesburg with Ram Jam Entertainment. Every second month they host themed "Flair" sessions, where artists come together and share their craft, be it in music, art, dance, fashion or poetry. They provide a platform for upcoming artists to showcase their talents. They are also currently working on a musical outreach programme on a musical teenage outreach programme focusing on issues including pregnancy, suicide, cyber bullying and depression at schools throughout Gauteng. 8 S BU MASHININI Sibusiso Mashinini was born Mamelodi East. He has been a guitarist since 2003 and "went professional" in Mashinini has worked with a range of national and international artists. In his musical career he has been on stage throughout South Africa. He has appeared in short music DVD's. Has recorded and directed a number of CD s of local musicians. In 2006, he was privileged to work alongside the legendary Vusi Mahlasela before performing with HHP, TEARGAS, JR (hip hop), BUCIE, Liquideep. He subsequently performed with Unathi Msengana, Malik, Vusi Nova, Afro traction before teaming up with Tshepo Tshola, Siphokazi, Kwela Tebza, Swazi Dlamini and Tshepo Mngoma. He has shread the stage with internationally renowned artist's including Andy Narrel, Kem, Kelly Roland, Johnny Gill, James Ingram and Womack n Womack. 9 SOULFUL 7 BAND Soulful 7 is a 5-piece band which consists of 1 guitarist - Kagiso Monampana, pianists - Lifa Mavuso and Simphiwe Mnisi, drummer - Tshepa Diale, and a bassist - Neo Mofokeng. They were established in 2015 and have charmed their audience with their soulful music. Their goal is simple to become one of South Africa's bands and to encourage youths to do positive things with their spare time to avoid alcohol and drug abuse. Music should be a spiritual language used to communicate with people throughout the world. Meet the band: Tshepa Diale: our drummer from Meadowlands in Zone 9, goes to South West Gauteng College where he studies music and marketing. One highlight of his musical career is sharing the stage with Michael Rathebe Neo Mofokeng: the bassist from Tsakane studying for a diploma in Human Relations at Tshwane University of Technology. He has shared a stage with musicians including Deep mii, Ntokozo Mbambo Lifa Mavuso: our first keyboard player hails from Kwamhlanga in Mpumalanga. He is studying accounting at Damelin. He has been on stage with Ringo, Cornard Mukuevho, Vusi Mahlasela and Mandla Ntlaks. Simphiwe Mnisi: from Witbank in Mpumalanga our second keyboardist studies electrical engineering at Advisor Progressive College. Kagiso Monampana: our guitarist from Bela-Bela studies Chemical Engineering through Damelin College. On stage, he stood alongside Nyembezi Mahlangu, G7 and Paul K. 11 WHAT IS THE EUROPEAN UNION? The EU is a unique economic and political partnership between 28 European countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom) that has delivered half a century of peace, stability and prosperity, helped raise living standards, launched a single European currency, and is enjoyed in building a single Europe-wide market in which people, goods, services and capital move among Member States as freely as within a country. EU-South Africa Strategic Partnership. Closer ties between South and the EU were consolidated with the establishment of a Strategic Partnership, the only one of its kind concluded by the EU with an African nation. This Partnership is centered on enhanced political dialogue around issues of share interest such as climate change, global governance, the global economy, bilateral, trade, and peace and security matters. Its Action Plan encompasses sectoral cooperation on a range of issues such as the environment and climate change, science and technology, transport, space, migration, trade, etc. Trade & Investment. Trade and investment relations between South Africa and the EU are solid, with South Africa s exports to the EU now at 23% of total exports. More importantly, half of South Africa s exports to the EU consist of manufactured goods, which contribute directly to beneficiation and employment and thus to inclusive growth. The EU is not only the biggest export market for South Africa but remains the dominant source of Foreign Direct Investment in SA as well (77% of stocks in 2015). EU-generated investment, including more recent projects in renewable energy, has created an estimated 350,000 direct jobs. Development cooperation. The EU remains an important development partner to South Africa, providing significant external assistance funds. The EU's total indicative support envelope to South Africa for the period amounts to some 250 million. It is complemented by a 450 million loan finance envelope from the European Investment Bank (EIB) as well as grant funding from the EU Member States.
