2 welcome! It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Austin Lyric Opera s 26th season. In my first season as general director, I look forward to building upon the enthusiasm and energy resonating from a spectacular anniversary season. ALO has played a vital role in the arts in Austin for the past quarter century, and I am confident that with your help and support the best is yet to come. As ALO embarks on its next 25 years, join us for Pagliacci, The Marriage of Figaro, and Faust three of the most dramatic, delightful and powerful operas in the repertoire and fall in love with an art form as breathtaking and bold as Austin itself. We look forward to seeing you at the opera! Joseph Specter General Director Mark Matson, Illustrations: stephanie dalton cowan A great opera performance is an extraordinary experience! It is exciting, compelling, memorable and fun. Sometimes, it s even life-changing. As Austin Lyric Opera s artistic director, my goal is that every one of our performances achieves greatness. This season, we present three of the most popular and enduring operas ever written. We have engaged outstanding artists singers, directors, designers, instrumentalists to interpret and perform these amazing works. You will hear world renowned tenor Carl Tanner as the tormented clown in Pagliacci, enjoy Austin favorite Paolo Pecchioli as the infamous Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro, and experience a stunning new production of Faust directed by Bernard Uzan. All while we continue our tradition of introducing rising young opera stars to ALO audiences. I m sure you ll agree that it s going to be quite an exciting season! I look forward to seeing you at The Long Center for ALO s 26th season of truly great opera. Richard Buckley Artistic Director and Principal Conductor
3 Leoncavallo pagliacci Who s laughing now? This famously tragic playwithin-a-play tells the heartbreaking story of betrayal and jealousy in an Italian commedia dell arte troupe. Theater and reality collide in a dramatic climax of operatic proportions when Canio discovers his wife has eyes for another actor. Laugh, clown, at your broken love! he exclaims in one of opera s most legendary tenor arias. Don t miss the return of world renowned tenor Carl Tanner to the Austin stage. His Canio at the New York City Opera was admiringly described as the performance of a lifetime. Visit austinlyricopera.org/event/pagliacci for a behind-the-scenes look, or visit ALOonthego.org on your mobile device for exclusive and readily accessible content! 4 mozart The marriage of figaro Something s afoot in the palace of the Count! In this single day of madness, Mozart takes us on a laughout-loud ride filled with schemes, masquerades and mistaken identities. The infamous Figaro, his bride-to-be Susanna, and the Countess conspire to expose and embarrass the cunning, skirt-chasing Count. This is opera buffa (comic opera) at its best. Don t miss the return of Jamie-Rose Guarrine (The Magic Flute, 2011) and bass Paolo Pecchioli (The Italian Girl in Algiers, 2011) to Austin as Susanna and Figaro in this riotously funny staging of Mozart s classic. Visit austinlyricopera.org/event/figaro for a behindthe-scenes look, or visit ALOonthego.org on your mobile device for exclusive and readily accessible content! 5 Gounod faust Would you strike a deal with the devil? Faust, an aging scholar, wants another chance at youth and love, and forges a malevolent pact with Méphistophélès to seduce the beautiful and innocent Marguerite. What follows is a struggle between good and evil that is destined for tragedy as only great opera can tell it. Abounding with Gounod s unforgettable melodies, this new production by Bernard Uzan was a triumph at its Arizona premiere. Don t miss the Austin debut of bass-baritone Jamie Offenbach in the role of Méphistophélès. Offenbach has been praised as made for the part. Visit austinlyricopera.org/event/faust for a behind-the-scenes look, or visit ALOonthego.org on your mobile device for exclusive and readily accessible content!
