Please provide an address on the attached form to receive updates.
2 RRHS River s Edge/Chorale 2 CHOIR POLICIES All school policies outlined in the Rocky River student handbook will be enforced. Performances Attendance is mandatory. Lack of attendance at a performance will affect your grade. See GRADING. Rehearsals River s Edge will meet in class 2 nd period on Thursdays. Chorale will meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Days may be switched with prior notice. Active and positive participation is expected during all rehearsals. Students must be prompt to class. Please be in your assigned seat with your materials by the time the bell rings. Water is the only beverage permitted in the classroom. Food is not permitted, unless provided or preapproved by the director (generally on post-concert days). Gum chewing during rehearsal is dangerous and will not be permitted. Students must discard gum upon entering the room. Ask permission to play the piano. The piano needs to stay functional and in tune for the choir to be successful. Please keep your pencil out and ready to make markings in your music. Pencil checks may be conducted at random and a missing pencil is a loss of 2 participation points for the day. GRADING Grades will be based on the following criteria: Daily Participation (50% of final grade) Students have the potential to earn five points every day in class (5/5=100%=A for the day). The daily participation grade is based on factors such as punctuality, positive participation, and preparedness. Classroom Assignments (20% of final grade) This category consists of any work assigned to be completed in class, including sight-reading/theory workbook, sectional singing, and written work, including quizzes and tests. Performances (30% of final grade) Performances are mandatory. Please mark the dates of all performances listed on the attached schedule on your home calendar. There is always the possibility that additional concerts may be added; however, you will be given sufficient notification should this occur. Duet/trio/quartet/octet/row checks will be included in the performance category and will be announced at least 2 weeks prior to date. Rocky River City Schools Music Department Attendance Policy The main objective of the attendance policy of the performing ensembles in the RRCS music department is to uphold the tradition of quality that has been established through the community and schools. Through the study and performance of music of superior quality, the directors try to maintain the highest standards for the students involved. Performances throughout the year include community performances, school concerts, assemblies, and large group contest. All students who participate in the performing organizations undertake the obligation to appear with the groups in public performance as a course requirement. Public performances are viewed as a group test and cannot truly be made up. Every student is important to the organization. Absence of even one member causes
3 RRHS River s Edge/Chorale 3 the need for readjustment in sound production, instrumentation, and positions within the group. However, to maintain consistency in grading procedures, only in the case of an excused absence, the student will schedule a make up assessment where they will have the opportunity to earn up to 90% credit for the performance. The 10% loss of credit is consistent with the loss of musical elements such as balance, blend, etc. that cannot be made up in an individual performance. To provide uniformity, there will be a designated performance dress code. [Please see page 1. There will be a grade penalty and students may be asked not to perform for dress code violations]. Policy I. A student is required to participate in all ensemble performances. a. Examples of EXCUSED ABSENCES i. Emergency beyond the control of student or parent ii. Illness iii. Other reasons with 30 day approval (see below) b. Examples of UNEXCUSED ABSENCES i. Lack of transportation ii. Too busy iii. Other reasons not approved 30 days in advance (see below) II. III. IV. Tardiness for a performance warm-up will result in the lowering of one letter grade for the performance. An UNEXCUSED ABSENCE from a performance will result in the lowering of one letter grade for the grading period in which the absence occurs. 30 Day Approval: Under exceptional circumstances, an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE may be EXCUSED when arrangements are made at least 30 days in advance of the performance and approved by the director. (Example: planned family vacation). All excuses must be made in writing to the director by the student s parent(s). V. Other performances may be added and required if more than 30 days notice is given to the student. Adherence to this policy will ensure that all students will receive the best possible experience. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR RIVER S EDGE: 1. River s Edge will meet one day per week during the 2 nd period time starting in the school year. We will also be adding additional after-school rehearsals once or twice per quarter to help compensate for this smaller amount of time during the school day. These after school rehearsals will be typically on Friday afternoons and/or professional days. After two years of study, the director has determined that longer rehearsals are more productive and better for our choreographers to accomplish their goals. 2. Be on time. We start AT THE BELL. All members must wear proper attire and shoes to dance in during class. If you can t dance in it, you can t wear it. Students who do not have appropriate attire must leave class to change and will lose two (2) participation points for that day.
4 RRHS River s Edge/Chorale 4 3. ALL EXTRA REHERASALS ARE MANDATORY (i.e., Monday nights, Friday afternoons, etc.). Every student must be present for a productive rehearsal. If you are not present, the performance of the entire group will suffer. Points will be given for ALL rehearsals, and unexcused absences will result in a 0 for that rehearsal period. Tardiness will result in lost points proportional to the amount of time missed. 4. During performances members will wear all required accessories. Boys hair must be neat and tidy, resting no longer than collar length. Girls will wear hairpieces. Nail polish is not permitted. Girls will wear matching makeup. Only required jewelry may be worn. 5. You will receive all costumes in performance-ready condition; it is your responsibility to take care of your assigned costume. If for any reason a costume is damaged (lost button, torn hem, sweat stain, etc.) it is your responsibility to let the director know IN ADVANCE of the performance so it may be repaired. Inspect your costume for issues following every performance. Do not tell the director you have an issue with your costume the DAY of the performance. 6. Vocal and physical health is critical. If you are sick and cannot rehearse, you may still gain a great deal by marking or following along in the music and listening to instruction. 7. You are a part of a very select group of individuals and, as such, should hold yourself to the highest of standards. You are role models for the rest of the Vocal Music program. You represent Rocky River High School at school, on the bus and on the road. All Rocky River High School Student Activity Participation Rules, as well as the Vocal Music classroom rules apply. 8. Have a healthy attitude in the rehearsal room. It is a safe place where you can leave all of your troubles at the door and just enjoy singing. Take personal responsibility to be a positive influence on the morale of the group. 9. Our parents are our biggest fans and our greatest supporters. Please be respectful of their time and obligations by passing along correspondence regarding time and date changes as quickly as possible. 10. The enclosed calendar is as accurate and comprehensive as possible (from the beginning of the school year). However, additional rehearsals and performances may be added. These are still considered mandatory for class unless otherwise stated by the director. Appropriate notice will be given for any additional performances.
