1 A Survey (Broad Overview) of Music History Cycle 1 Day A Time Period: Antiquity and the Middle Ages ( ) In all of history, most music is about 1. Love 2. Death 3. Religion Genre: Gregorian Chant must be 1. Monophonic- one voice part 2. Vocal 3. Religious/Sacred 4. Latin At church, at least 40,000 chants a year were memorized! Example: Mass for Christmas Day (monophonic and sacred)
