1 TWU Course Syllabus Applied Study in Clarinet Instructor: Stephen Robb. BMus (Queen s) LMus (McGill) MMus, BEd (UBC) Goals and Objectives: Each student should strive to achieve his or her highest potential. Lessons are designed to suit individual needs, and weekly assignments are expected to be ready on time. Unless library parts are used, students should purchase their own music. The use of photocopied music is illegal, except if used for educational purposes only (not for public performance). The instructor will make an effort to loan music to students when possible. Students should learn and appreciate clarinet repertoire from all periods of music. 2. Master techniques of clarinet playing, including tone production, dynamic control, correct fingerings and fingering patterns, third register note production, articulation styles, intonation tendencies and corrective measures. 3. Recognize and demonstrate understanding of all interpretive instructions found in music; recognize and demonstrate understanding of performance practice styles and conventions pertinent to the music. 4. Know how to care for the instrument and identify problems that hinder good playing, such as keys out of adjustment and pads not covering tone holes. 5. Reed Preparation: understand how a reed is made and how to either make or adjust reeds for individual mouthpiece and playing requirements. Instruments: Instruments should be kept in good working order and reeds should be ready to play at each lesson. All music majors must have a professional quality instrument. Recommended instruments: Buffet R-13 series, Leblanc Concerto /Opus or equivalent. Areas of development: Technical proficiency, tone color, stylistic interpretation, articulation, consistency in playing, technical accuracy, body position, stage presence, and thorough knowledge of repertoire. Requirements and Materials: All students are required to attend all lessons, clarinet studio classes, clarinet events (including guest and student recitals and master classes). Missed lessons must be excused. Only one unexcused missed lesson is allowed each semester without affecting the final grade. Each student is expected to own a recent model professional clarinet and mouthpiece, and a metronome. A chromatic tuner would also be an asset. Grades Grades are determined by each student's participation, interest, improvement and EVIDENT work in the practice room. Assignments are given each week and it is expected that each student will meet assignment expectations. To receive an A or A+, each student is required to perform in Rep and Studio, attend all lessons classes, and follow the above steps. Any unexplained or non-excused missed lesson, as well as a noted lack of commitment will result in the lowering of the final grade. Grades for the course, individual assignments,
2 attendance and juries will be based on the following criteria: A Student demonstrates a superior competency in completing course and studio requirements and/or a superior comprehension of presented material. Assignments are ready at each lesson. B Student demonstrates an above-average competency in completing course and studio requirements and/or above-average comprehension of presented material. Assignments are satisfactory. C Student demonstrates an ability to adequately meet requirements of the course and studio requirements and/or an adequate comprehension of presented material. Assignments are not satisfactory. D Effort is put toward completing requirements of the course and studio requirements, but minimal requirements are not met. Assignments are not done. F Student fails to meet acceptable standards for earning a passing grade for the course. Assignments are not done and performance is poor. + A plus grade will positively impact the average letter grade at the completion of the semester - A minus grade will negatively impact the average letter grade at the completion of the semester Students must achieve a mark of C+ or greater to continue as music majors. Juries All music majors must play and pass a jury at the end of each semester (except those who perform a recital during the semester). See TWU Jury Requirements Sheet. All Jury performances MUST have an accompanist if the piece requires. Solo pieces and unaccompanied selections may also be prepared for jury, with permission of the instructor. It is the student s responsibility to complete the Jury registration form and obtain the necessary permissions by the posted deadline. It is the student s responsibility to arrange schedules with the TWU staff accompanist and/or student accompanists for the jury performances. Accompanists should be made available to attend the student s lessons in the weeks immediately prior to the jury for coachings with the instructor if at all possible. It is the student s responsibility to show leadership by organizing the rehearsals in conjunction with the various accompanists.
