Music History and Culture SUBAREA I LISTENING SKILLS Competency 0001 Analyze the elements of music presented in a recorded example. Analyze melodic elements presented in a recorded example, including scales, intervals, phrasing, and melodic contours. Analyze harmonic elements presented in a recorded example, including intervals, chord types, harmonic progressions, cadences, and nonchord tones. Analyze the elements of rhythm, meter, and tempo presented in a recorded example. Analyze the elements of texture and form presented in a recorded example. Competency 0002 Analyze elements of a musical performance presented in a recorded example. Identify band and orchestral instruments and various types of instrumental ensembles. Analyze expressive elements in an instrumental performance (e.g., dynamics, articulation, tempo changes). Recognize errors in an instrumental performance (e.g., errors related to pitch, intonation, rhythm, articulation, phrasing, ensemble precision, blend and balance). 1
3 Competency 0003 Understand the historical or cultural context of a work in a recorded example. Demonstrate knowledge of styles, genres, characteristics, major works, and major composers of music from the major periods of Western music history. Recognize characteristics, genres, and styles of music from a variety of cultures within the United States and around the world. SUBAREA II INSTRUMENTAL PERFORMANCE AND MUSIC METHODOLOGY Competency 0004 Demonstrate knowledge of string and keyboard instruments. Demonstrate knowledge of the types, characteristics, and uses of string and keyboard instruments. Demonstrate knowledge of basic playing techniques (e.g., hand position, bowing technique, fingering, posture). Apply knowledge of common problems encountered in playing and techniques for resolving such problems. Demonstrate basic knowledge of keyboard harmony, functional progressions, and simple accompaniments. Competency 0005 Demonstrate knowledge of wind and percussion instruments. Demonstrate knowledge of the types, characteristics, and uses of wind and percussion instruments. Demonstrate knowledge of basic playing techniques (e.g., embouchure, breathing, fingering, hand position, rudiments). Apply knowledge of common problems encountered in playing and techniques for resolving such problems. 2
4 Competency 0006 Demonstrate knowledge of band, orchestra, and small instrumental ensemble performance and repertoire. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles and techniques of ensemble performance. Apply knowledge of basic instrumentation, rehearsal strategies, skills, and activities for bands, orchestras, and small instrumental ensembles. Demonstrate knowledge of effective methodologies and practices for encouraging self-analysis and musical independence. Apply knowledge of methods and appropriate music literature for band, orchestra, small instrumental ensemble, and solo. Demonstrate knowledge of basic copyright laws and the correct use of copyrighted printed and digital music and related responsibilities. Apply knowledge of assessment strategies for instrumental ensembles. Competency 0007 Apply techniques of conducting and score reading. Apply knowledge of common beat patterns, expressive techniques, and cuing techniques used in conducting. Analyze score excerpts (e.g., instrumentation, expressive requirements, potential performance issues). 3
5 Competency 0008 Understand principles of music methodology. Apply knowledge of the basic philosophy of music education and research to advocate for the inclusion of music within the school curriculum. Demonstrate knowledge of various approaches to music education (e.g., Orff, Kodály, Jaques-Dalcroze), including strategies for planning and delivering lessons based on these approaches. Demonstrate familiarity with various sight-singing methods and strategies for teaching and assessing such methods at each grade level. Demonstrate familiarity with various rhythm reading systems and strategies for teaching and assessing such methods at each grade level. Demonstrate familiarity with strategies for modifying instruction for students with diverse backgrounds, strengths, and needs. Apply knowledge of the competencies in General Music in Oklahoma's core curriculum and strategies for incorporating them into various instrumental music classes. Demonstrate knowledge of how music integrates with all other academic disciplines (e.g., math, science, visual arts, drama). Demonstrate knowledge of technology use in the music classroom. SUBAREA III MUSIC THEORY AND COMPOSITION Competency 0009 Understand musical notation. Recognize key signatures and pitches using a given clef. Demonstrate knowledge of note values, rest values, and time signatures. Define musical symbols and terms, including dynamic indications, tempo markings, articulation symbols and markings, bowings, common embellishments, and expression markings. 4
6 Competency 0010 Analyze the elements of melody. Identify scales, modes, and melodic intervals. Analyze melodic characteristics, including skips, leaps, stepwise motion, repetition, melodic contour, and phrasing. Competency 0011 Analyze the elements of harmony. Identify harmonic intervals, chord types, and chord inversions. Analyze cadences, harmonic progressions, modulations, and nonchord tones. Competency 0012 Analyze musical composition and arrangement. Analyze musical examples in terms of musical forms, textures, and compositional techniques. Apply knowledge of strategies for arranging or adapting music effectively and appropriately to meet the needs and ability levels of individuals, school performing groups, and classroom ensembles. 5
