1 Please complete Step I by Tuesday, June 5! Thank You! It s finally here! Your child is entering fourth or fifth grade in the Souderton Area School District. This means they are able to choose which band or string instrument they would like to play next school year! Your child attended an assembly describing the band and string programs. Students learned about the instruments of each ensemble, discovered how these instruments make music, and how they can learn to play a musical instrument. Lessons for beginning musicians are being provided on the following instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, and Percussion. Your child may have one particular instrument in mind. However, we require students to provide three choices in order of preference. You will need to have both one string and one band instrument among your choices. Most students are able to start lessons with their first choice. With scheduling and balanced instrumentation in mind, you may be contacted about your second or third choices. Every position on a baseball diamond is critical for team success. The same is true in the band and orchestra. The success of the elementary, as well as future middle and high school instrumental groups, relies on well-balanced instrumentation from the first day of instruction forward. *Our goal is to encourage the mid to low pitched instruments - Cello, Viola, Trombone, & Baritone* Instrumental Music Registration is split into two steps. This will allow the teachers to establish who is playing what instrument in each school BEFORE any payment is made and eliminate unnecessary confusion in the summer months. Step I - Online Instrumental Music Registration May 21, 2018 through In this window of time, please visit You will find a direct link to the Instrumental Music Online Registration. Directors will use the results to create balanced ensembles for the school year. If you already have access to an instrument it should be checked during Step I of this process. Please do not rent an instrument before you receive an from your child s music teacher. Step II - Rental/ Lease Agreement Completion June 15, August 1, 2018 When you receive an from the directors confirming your child s instrument choice, your child will receive paperwork at school with rental information so you can rent an instrument. The instrument your family and the director have decided upon will be delivered to school in mid-august! STUDENTS WHO ALREADY HAVE ACCESS TO AN INSTRUMENT MUST PURCHASE A BOOK! 3 What is a Well-balanced Ensemble? A baseball team with seven outfielders and no pitcher would not be a well balanced team. The same holds true for orchestras and bands. Orchestras and bands need violas, cellos, basses, trombones, and baritones to balance the sound of the group. Every instrument needs to be heard, not just violins and saxophones. Your child may be asked to play their second or third instrument choice to achieve a well-balanced ensemble. We **DO NOT RECOMMEND** purchasing an instrument from the internet or big box stores. Quality is often poor and dubious. Also, repairs are at the owner s expense. Low purchase prices give the illusion of a good deal. One of the many benefits of renting is the quick response to broken instruments with zero liability to parents and students. If you have access to a used instrument, have it checked by one of the music teachers during Step I.
