1 WELCOME TO THE 2003 FALL CRAWL! In 1979, Worcester AGO member and past dean Bob Dickinson arranged an impromptu organ crawl with several friends. It was so much fun that another crawl was held on Columbus Day 1980, this time officially sponsored by the Worcester Chapter AGO and the Worcester Historical Museum, and led by the AGO s Steve Long and the Museum s Bill Wallace. Each year since then, the Worcester Chapter has had an organ crawl on Columbus Day. From , the crawls were led and directed by Richard F. Jones, curator of Mechanics Hall, dean of the Worcester Chapter, and national Vice President of the Organ Historical Society. In 1989, Judy Ollikkala was asked to lead the crawls and her enthusiasm and creativity were extraordinary. Into the new millennium, Judy organized crawls that ranged over all New England, visiting famous instruments and discovering organs and churches that had been relatively unknown. The crawls grew even more popular under Judy s direction, and usually attracted almost eighty organists, organ historians, and organ lovers every Columbus Day. This year the torch was passed --- back --- to Richard F. Jones, now the minister of the First Parish Church in Bolton. In 2003, we will visit churches and hear recitals on instruments that have not been featured on earlier crawls. Three instruments by George Stevens are included. Only one large instrument by local builder George Reed remains extant and it is among the organs on today s crawl. We will also enjoy a small but distinguished Hutchings, a bold Frazee, and an opulent instrument by George Ryder made even more opulent by Phil Beaudry. A last minute addition is a stop at the former First Unitarian Church of Clinton, home to an 1868 Simmons. The church building was recently purchased by a Spanish Seventh-Day Adventist congregation which is carefully restoring it. The congregation knows the organ is special, but it, too, needs restoration. The Harvard Historical Society is housed in the former Still River Baptist Church. The Society has preserved the church sanctuary and its organ. The room, as you will hear, is perfect for music. When the Unitarians in Harvard built their new meeting house in the 1960s after a fire destroyed the old church, they installed a thirteen rank unified Wicks organ, entirely typical of the neo-baroque instruments then in vogue. Our ears today are attuned to rather different sounds.

2 Hearing the Wicks will remind us of the significant changes that have taken place in contemporary organ building. Lunch will be at Fruitlands Museum, which has some of the best views (and the best food) in the area. The museum keeps alive the heritage of Native Americans, Shakers, and transcendentalists who each in turn called the hillside in Harvard home. Our thanks to our recitalists: Robin Dinda, Malcolm Halliday, Barbara Owen, Wesley Hall, Jeffrey Wood, Lucia Clemente Falco, Lois Toeppner, and Sean Redrow. We also thank the clergy and musicians of the churches we will visit, especially the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Wright-Gray and Ronna Rae Archbold of the First Church in Sterling; Rev. Gary Kiontke of the First Congregational Church, Clinton; the congregation of the Seventh-Day Adventist Spanish Church, Clinton; Melanie Clifton- Harvey, Collections Manager and the Board of Directors of the Harvard Historical Society; Rev. Wendy Bell and Star Stevens of the First Congregational Unitarian Church in Harvard; the staff of the Evangelical Congregational Church, Harvard; Rev. Susan Butler and Charlotte Russell of the Union Church in Stow; Rev. Tom Rosiello and Suzanne Reine of the First Parish Church of Stow; and Rev. Stephen Cook and Marjorie Mitchell of the First Unitarian Church of Hudson. We are grateful to Robin Dinda and Scott Yonker for their help with arrangements, and to Shirley Sefton, sexton of the First Parish of Bolton for providing additional staffing. Barbara Owen generously provided brief histories of the organ builders. Next year? Yes, the crawl will be back! We plan to follow the old Post Road (and the Minute Men) through Sudbury, Wayland, Concord, and Lexington. We hope you will join us.

Gardner and his wife. Mrs, Gardner had served the church as an organist for many years. There was a pipe organ in the earlier meeting house. Records exist of payments made to organists and organ pumpers, but no records have been found regarding the builder of the organ. Sean P. Redrow, director of music in Bolton, will demonstrate the organ through the playing and singing of the hymn I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say, found at the back of this booklet. Wealthy mill owners were church members, and their support of the church is visible in its elegant appointments, not the least of which is the organ by George Reed. Sometime in the twentieth century, a second organ was installed in the church. The only traces of this instrument are two facades on either side of the chancel and one high on the rear wall. The pipework has disappeared, and the console has been stripped of its keyboards and stopknobs. While the church currently favors contemporary Christian music, it is to be praised for maintaining the Reed organ, the largest instrument he ever built.

The congregation has worked for a year to restore the church and will hold an open house next weekend in celebration. The building is impressive, as is the façade of the rare Simmons organ with its stenciled pipes looking as if they had just been painted. A hand-pumping mechanism is intact. The congregation is appreciative of the significance of the organ and would welcome suggestions for its restoration --- and practical help! We appreciate the church s warm welcome today! Perhaps its most priceless artifact is the building itself, constructed by the Baptist Church and Society in The early Stevens organ is in excellent condition and was most recently played for the wedding of the Historical Society s Collections Manager, Melanie Clifton-Harvey. Barbara Owen will demonstrate the instrument and announce her program. Organist, organ restorer, and one of the country s foremost organ historians, Barbara Owen has a particular interest in smaller American instruments like the Stevens organ. We are grateful to her for filling-in at the last moment for Ian Watson, Director of Music at St. Paul s Cathedral, Worcester, who is ill. The hymn is Marching to Zion, and is found in the back of this booklet. The First Parish Church is known for the concerts it presents and hosts and many accomplished musicians are members of the church. It is appropriate that AGO member the Rev.
