4 4 RULES AND REGULATIONS This Music Festival will be known as The Elmira District Kiwanis Music Festival and is sponsored by The Kiwanis Club of Elmira, Inc. in cooperation with the Elmira Music Teachers Association and members of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association. In submitting his/her entry form, the contestant agrees to all the rules and regulations of the Festival stipulated herein and agrees to be governed by the same. ELIGIBILITY: 1. An Amateur shall be defined as follows when referred to in this Festival: Any Person whose principal means of livelihood is not derived from music 2. All competitive sections and classes in this Festival are open to amateurs only. Noncompetitive adult classes are open to anyone. 3. In all OPEN classes A section refers to Secondary School Students (and those waiting for up to one year to attend Post Secondary school) and B section refers to Contestants beyond Secondary school (Post-Secondary students or adult amateurs working at any Grade level). A section Contestants will be eligible for Scholarships and Trophies and B section Contestants will be eligible for Scholarships only. A Secondary School student is defined as one who has attended high school at any point in the current academic year (September to June), or a student who is between Secondary and Post Secondary studies. 4. Adults and students more than one year past high school graduation should enter Open B or non-competitive graded classes ONLY. 5. The Elmira District Kiwanis Music Festival is open only to eligible performers who reside, or attend school, or study music within the following districts, or with a member of the Elmira Music Teachers Association: Townships of Woolwich, Wellesley, Wilmot, Peel, Arthur, Mornington, Pilkington, West Garafraxa, North Dumfries, or Maryborough; the Towns and Villages within or adjacent to the above described Townships, including Elora, Fergus and Arthur. 6. Students residing or studying outside of the above criteria may enter with the recommendation of a teacher from the Elmira Music Teachers Association or Festival Committee member. 7. School ensembles that are outside of the geographic limits may write a letter of application to the Kiwanis Club requesting to be included for the subsequent year. 8. In classes designated by age, age will be determined as of January In ensemble classes to determine the correct class, average the ages and round down to the nearest age (example, piano duet with an 11 & 8 year old, 11+8=19 2=9.5, enter in 9 & under class).

5 5 ENTRIES 1. Each Contestant (or teacher, parent/guardian) must sign an entry form declaring that he/she has and will comply with all rules and regulations governing the Festival. Please use the Solo Entry Form at the end of the Syllabus. 2. Only one entry shall be submitted for ensemble (duet, trio and quartet etc) classes and it should include the names and addresses of all Contestants in the group. Please use the Ensemble Entry Form at the end of the Syllabus. 3. School Entries shall be submitted with the prescribed fee. Please use the School Ensemble Entry Form at the end of the Syllabus. 4. All entries must be complete and in writing on the Official Festival Entry Forms and the entry form MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY THE PRESCRIBED FEE. MAKE CHEQUES PAYABLE TO KIWANIS CLUB OF ELMIRA, INC. Entry fees for 2018 will be $20.00 per class to a maximum of $70.00 per student per discipline for solo entries only. Duets, Trios and Ensembles must be submitted as a separate fee with a separate registration form. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE SECRETARY ON OR BEFORE MONDAY JANUARY 29 th, NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. 5. The Festival Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry. 6. Any class in which less than three entries are received may be subject to cancellation, combined with another class or converted to a masterclass. In either case the contestant will be advised and given five days notice in which to enter another class or to withdraw his/her entry. 7. By registering for the Elmira Kiwanis Music Festival, the participant or the participant s legal guardian consents to the publishing of the participants name on the festival website, festival media and any of the festival s printed literature. 8. By registering for the Elmira Kiwanis Music Festival, the participant or the participant s legal guardian consents to being photographed by an official festival photographer on behalf of the Kiwanis Club during the music festival and to the use of those photos on the festival website, festival media and any of the festival s printed literature. 9. 6 TEST PIECES 1. The PLAYING TIME of all test pieces is VERY IMPORTANT and MUST BE stated on the Entry Form or the entry and fee will be refused. 2. An authentic score must be provided to the Hall Secretary on duty prior to performance, who will deliver it to the adjudicator. It is a violation of the Canadian Copyright Act to copy any portion of music without the authorization from the copyright owner. Participants are strictly forbidden to use photocopies for performances. When music is not memorized a second authentic score of the music to be performed must be presented to the adjudicator. Photocopies are not accepted unless accompanied by a letter from the publisher giving written permission. 2b. The Frederick Harris Music Co., Ltd. is pleased to grant permission to festival, recital and examination participants to photocopy one page from their publications, for the purpose of facilitating a page turn. 2c. Digital downloads should be stamped by the retailer or accompanied by verification of payment online. 2d. Authentic scores include those printed from A cover sheet indicating the score s origin must be included. Page-turners are allowed. Failure to provide proper music will result in adjudication only. 3. On choral and vocal numbers it is allowable to transpose rather than use the original key. 4. It is preferred that true studies, be entered in the Study Classes only, not in other festival categories. 5. All music must be memorized except those exempted by the rules preceding individual sections. Where memorization of music is not required, a page-turner is acceptable. 6. Duets, trios and ensemble performances need NOT be memorized. 7. Repeats, Da Capos and Dal Segnos are at the discretion of the teacher. 8. Contestants may not perform more than one piece in a single class. Exceptions will be made for ensembles (duet, duo, trio, quartet), where one student performs in multiple ensembles with different partner groups. 9. Contestants may enter up to two classes in any section unless stated otherwise. 10. Contestants may not perform the same piece in more than one class. 11. Any Contestant who performs music that is not eligible will receive adjudication only. 12. Contestants, who use music in a class that specifies that the music must be memorized, will receive an adjudication only. 13. Pieces may be selected from current or previous RCM or Conservatory Canada Syllabi. In case of discrepancy, refer to current syllabi, with the exception of duets, trios, quartets, popular, church and first or second year of study. 14. Selections in the RCME or CC books where two pieces are played as a unit (ex Bach Preludes & Fugues, Starer Pink & Crimson, two or three movements of Sonata at the Level 9, 10 or ARCT) should be performed as a single entry. 6

7 7 PROGRAMME PROCEDURE & PARTICIPANT CONDUCT The Programme can be found on the website 1. Out of respect for the Secretary and other performers CLASS TIMES WILL NOT BE CHANGED. 2. The Festival Committee will decide on the order in which classes will be taken and the order in which the Contestant is to appear in his/her classes. 3. The Festival Secretary will advise the Contestant s teacher when they will perform each class they have entered and provide a Competition Summary to their Teacher prior to the Festival. Any changes made without consulting the Festival Secretary will result in the Contestant being disqualified from that class. 4. If you are unable to attend your class please call and notify the Secretary as soon as possible at Refunds will not be issued for cancelled classes. 5. Performers are expected to arrive 15 minutes early and observe proper performance etiquette. 6. The use of flash photography is not permitted in the performance halls at any time. The use of cameras and recording devices are up to the discretion of the adjudicator. Please be respectful to the performers and not create distractions that can increase nerves. Before posting on social media please ensure only your own children are recorded, or that permission has been granted from parents/guardians of other students. 7. Contestants must not start their presentation until advised to do so by the Adjudicator. The Adjudicator has the authority to stop any performance at anytime. 8. No practicing will be allowed in the Performance Halls at any time during the Festival. 9. Audiences will NOT be allowed in the performance hall during Sight Reading or Quick Study Classes. 10. Students participating in Sight Reading or Quick Study Classes will be taken by the hall secretary to wait in a separate room while other participants in their class are performing. 11. The composition competitors will be judged on written work only. They may perform the piece if they choose, but must indicate their intent on the Entry Form. The mark for the written work of composition will then be announced but no mark will be given for the performance. 12. The arrangement competitors will be judged in advance for written work and on their performance during the Festival week. The marks will be averaged for an overall mark. ACCOMPANIST 1. The Music Festival Committee WILL NOT provide an Official Accompanist. 2. The Contestant or ensemble MUST BE accompanied by his/her own accompanist. 3. Recorded music is not to be used for accompaniment unless otherwise stated.

8 8 AWARDS 1. The Adjudicator s decision is FINAL in the awarding of all placements and awards including trophies and scholarships. 2. Scholarship winners will be announced at the conclusion of the Festival 3. All contestants will be awarded marks, except in non-competitive classes. 4. Students must perform in at least 2 SOLO classes to qualify for a scholarship, not including Quick Study or Sight Reading. 5. ALL Senior Students for any instrument or voice must also perform in a Sight Reading or Quick Study Class to qualify for a scholarship. Teachers may assist their students in preparation for Quick Study Classes. 6. The Adjudicator may withhold any award at his/her discretion. 7. A scholarship may be withheld or transferred to another class selected by the Adjudicator when, in his or her opinion, none of the performances in competition for a scholarship is up to Scholarship standards. 4. No Contestant may be awarded the same trophy more than two consecutive years. 5. A Contestant may not receive more than one Scholarship in any one year in one Festival section. 6. Trophies and scholarship will only be awarded pending sufficient number of competitors in any given category to merit their distribution. 7. Scholarships will be mailed to the Scholarship winner or music teacher within one month after conclusion of the Festival. 8. The acceptance, limitations and form and assignment of all trophies, scholarships and bursaries will be at the sole discretion of the Festival Committee on the Adjudicator s advice. The Committee will not entertain appeals of the Adjudicator s decisions. 9. Contestants recommended by the Adjudicator for the final concert are expected to perform. MARKS First place winners must have a mark of 80 or more. Second place winners must have a mark of 75 or more. Third place winners must have a mark of 70 or more.

Selections in the RCME or CC books where two pieces are played as a unit (ex Martellato & Forte-Piano by L Papp) should be performed as a single entry.
