1 Brass Foundation Level 1 The pupil must be able to hold a level tone and be able to pitch low C and G on the 2nd line treble clef (Bb and F bass clef). The pupil should be able to play simple melodies with a range between C & G treble clef (Bb & F bass clef). The pupil must be able to able to articulate evenly and clearly at a variety of slow to medium tempos and demonstrate a good posture The pupil must know the valve combinations/slide positions and be able to play simple melodies with a range between C and G (Bb & F bass clef) along with simple dynamics ranging between piano and forte. The pupil must be able to count clap and play basic rhythms including crotchets, minims and semibreves and play patterns in imitation. The pupil should be able to play simple duet parts with a range between C and G (Bb & F bass clef) using a combination of simple rhythms

2 Brass Foundation Level 2 The pupil must be able to hold a level tone and have extended the range to upper B b including F sharp and low B*. *Ab, Eb and low A The pupil must be able to able to articulate evenly and clearly at a variety of tempos and demonstrate a good posture. The pupil must know the valve combinations and be able to play simple melodies with a range between C and Bb * along with simple dynamics ranging between piano and forte and make use of crescendo and diminuendo. *Bb and Ab The pupil must be able to count clap and play basic rhythms including crotchets, minims dotted minims and semibreves in imitation and with the introduction of simple melodic changes. The pupil should be able to play simple duet parts over the given range and manage a simple inner ensemble part.

3 Brass Foundation Level 3 The pupil must be able to hold a level tone and have extended the range to upper C* including notes covered in previous levels and be able to recognize and identify the key signatures of F & G major* **Bb **Eb & F major The pupil must be able to able to articulate evenly and clearly at a variety of tempos and be able to demonstrate slurred tonguing over groups of up to 4 consecutive notes within the same harmonic register and demonstrate an understanding of phrasing and breath control The pupil must be able to play simple melodies with a range of one octave starting on C along with simple dynamics ranging between piano and forte and make use of crescendo and diminuendo. The pupils should now be able to recognise and interpret simple tempo markings of allegro and andante. The pupil must be able to count clap and play basic rhythms including quavers, crotchets, minims, dotted minims and semibreves in imitation and be able to attempt simple melodies by ear. The pupil should be able to play simple ensemble parts over the given ranges and note values using some dynamic contrast and should be able to contribute to a school or beginners district ensemble.

4 Brass Intermediate Level 1 The pupil must be able to hold a level tone from low B up to and including high D* and be able to recognize and play a scale in the key of D major. Bass Clef: *low A - high C The pupil must be able to able to articulate evenly and clearly at a variety of tempos including simple lip slurs in the lower register. The pupil must be able to play melodies with a key signature of D major*, understand the need for and demonstrate good posture and be able to interpret simple tempo markings and dynamics including mezzo and moderato. Bass Clef: * C major The pupil must be able to count, clap and play all previous rhythms with the addition of understanding and counting triplet quavers; the pupil should also be able to play extended simple melodies by ear. The pupil should be now be in a position to lead a section in an advancing school band and should now have the confidence to tackle easier inner parts within district ensembles.

5 Brass Intermediate Level 2 The pupil must be able to hold a level tone from low A up to and including high E* including a fluency with G# & Eb**and be able to recognise and play a scale in the keys of A & Bb major. Bass Clef: *low G - high D **F# & D *** G & Ab major The pupil should be able to demonstrate a variety of articulations including staccato along with a combination of tongued and slurred patterns at a slow to moderate speed. Greater fluency with regard to lip slurs should be evident over one octave. The pupil must be able to play melodies and studies in the keys of A and B majors* whilst being able to interpret basic melodic phrasing and dynamics. Bass clef: *G & Ab majors The pupil must be now be able to count, clap and play all previous rhythms with an understanding of basic compound time signatures. The pupil should now be showing greater confidence in larger ensembles and be playing in a variety of styles.

6 Brass Intermediate Level 3 The pupil must be able to hold a level tone from low A up to and including high F* including a fluency with all chromatic notes whilst being able to recognise and play a scale in the keys of E & Eb**major. Bass Clef: * low G - high Eb bass clef **D & Db The pupil should be able to demonstrate a variety of articulations including accents at a moderate speed in a moving passage of music. Lip slurs should be reasonably fluent and controlled over the range of a 10th. The pupil must be able to play melodies and studies in the above keys over the entire chromatic range covered and be able to interpret simple Italian markings and tempos. The pupil must be able to count, clap and play all previous rhythms now being extended to include semiquavers and combinations of advancing rhythms. The pupil should now be taking an active part in district ensembles showing reasonable ensemble skills, be able to interpret and understand the need for compliance with the conductor s directions and help less experienced players with practical advice and by example.

7 Brass Advancing Level 1 The pupil must be able to hold a level tone at a variety of dynamic levels ranging from piano - forte from low *Ab to high G. The pupil must be able to fluently play the scales of **F, Ab Major & F, A, B minor Bass Clef: *low G - high F **Eb, Gb Major & Eb, G, A minor The pupil should be able to demonstrate and play combinations of differing articulations including: slurs & staccato and lips slurs all in quaver and slow semiquaver movement The pupil must be able to play fluently over the entire range listed with a variety of articulations and dynamics. More advanced combinations of rhythms should now be accomplished including syncopated patterns, off beats, triplets along with a good understanding of basic time signatures and note groupings. The pupil should now be taking a lead role within the section of a district band and leading within a school ensemble. A degree of maturity should be shown in a determination to improve their playing and perform to their best. The pupil should be taking minor solos in major concerts in the context of ensembles and should have experience of solo performance in a recital environment.

8 Brass Advancing Level 2 The pupil must be able to hold a level and controlled tone from low *G to high A or above at a variety of dynamic levels. The pupil should be able to play the scales of **Db major & C# minor and be fluent in the same range chromatically. Bass Clef: *low F - high G **C# major & B minor The pupil should be able to demonstrate a versatility of articulation including: attacca accents, lip and *valve slurring incorporating tongued and staccato notes over the entire range listed in semiquavers. Bass Clef: *soft or legato tonguing There should be a confidence and fluency of scales being played at semiquaver speed in the listed keys, a good facility at pitching intervals both tongued and slurred, there should be clean and controlled finger and slide work with an understanding of the use of the 1st & 3rd valve slides for intonation along with an awareness of intonation and how to correct it. The pupil should now be fluent with all basic rhythmic combinations including triplets and compound times, the pupil should be able to work out more advanced rhythms with a knowledge of time signatures and note groupings The pupil should now be becoming an accomplished performer with experience of solo recitals whilst taking on more demanding solos in an ensemble. There should also be the development of understanding repertoire and performance styles.
