3 3 Connecticut Children s Chorus Mission Statement The Connecticut Children s Chorus provides enriching, pre-professional musical experiences for highly talented and motivated young musicians in a supportive, community-centered environment where students passion and love for music can be nurtured. Through a variety of musical experiences guided by dedicated, accomplished directors, choir members have the opportunity to: - Develop comprehensive musicianship skills including music reading, vocal production, ear training, movement, and musical interpretation. - Engage in music making through a rich repertoire of choral music from different time periods and different cultures. - Perform with professional musical organizations such as the Hartford Symphony, the Hartford Chorale, the New Haven Chorale, the Hartt Symphony, other outstanding children s choirs from around the country, and professional tour artists that come through Connecticut. - Develop self-esteem and a sense of musical accomplishment. - Interact with other talented and motivated peers from different towns in Connecticut. - Travel to choral festivals and conferences in the U.S. and abroad. - Work with professional composers and guest directors. Membership Members of Overture Choir are typically in grades 1-3; Prelude 3-5; and Canticum 5-7. Concert Choir is for males with unchanged voices and females in grades 6 12 who demonstrate an advanced level of vocal development and musicianship. 7 7 Requirements Singers who have been accepted into the Connecticut Children s Chorus must submit the CCC Registration form with appropriate tuition and fees. Submission of the registration form with tuition and fees, and accepting a position in CCC by attendance, constitutes agreement with all policies stated in this handbook. Please see attendance policies in particular. Students in CCC should review the calendar and handbook prior to the start of the school year and attend only if they are willing to make a commitment to the organization for the coming year. A singer who does not fulfill this commitment will not be considered for solo and ensemble performance opportunities or for future membership in the organization. Attendance A choir is a group of individuals who choose to work together toward a unified musical goal. For this to be successful, attendance at rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Achieving strong attendance is one of our goals for the season. We want to support your children in their school choirs, school sporting events, academic classes and events at places of worship and we know that they are very busy. At the same time, when they audition for and make a commitment to the CCC, we hold that commitment in high regard. If a student is too busy to attend rehearsals and concerts at CCC, we suggest that they not participate in that season. We trust parents to be truthful in reporting absences and to do everything possible to insure good attendance at rehearsals and performances. Students who achieve perfect attendance (no unexcused absences) will join the CCC Honor Society and will be awarded a medal to be worn at performances in addition to their CCC participation pin. The official attendance policy for the CCC will be the following: First Unexcused Absence- If a student misses a rehearsal for an unexcused reason, the parent manager will call home immediately to find out why the student has missed. Second Unexcused Absence- Upon the second unexcused absence, the student must sing her or his parts for the director in order to perform in the upcoming concert. Third Unexcused Absence- Upon the third unexcused absence, the student may not sing in the concert. He or she may rejoin the choir at rehearsals following this concert. There is no tuition remission for students taken out of a concert because of poor attendance or for a student who quits a choir because of attendance. Excused Attendance- Death in family, true emergency, illness, school concert, other school event, other event negotiated between the director and parent. In order for an absence to be considered EXCUSED, the CCC Managing Director (ccc@hartford.edu) and the Choir Parent Manager should be notified of the absence via prior to the start of rehearsal. If necessary, an absence can be reported to the Hartt Community Division office by phone prior to rehearsal at (860) Unexcused Attendance- work schedule, homework, studying for tests, parties, other social functions, failing to contact Managing Director about the absence in advance.
8 8 Special Cases- We do understand that there are times when a student is in a school musical or plays a sport that there may need to be more flexibility in this attendance policy. In this event, parents should contact the director directly and work together to develop an attendance policy that works best with the situation. If no resolution is found, the request will then go to the Artistic Director. Should there be no resolution at this level, the request goes finally to the Hartt Community Division Director (or her designee) who will determine a final solution as well as any tuition remission granted in the special case. Special cases such as described above should be handled several weeks before the event begins. We have done away with the attendance absence forms from past years. If you know your child will be absent, please contact the Managing Director by sending an to ( CCC@hartford.edu). The Managing Director makes a list each Tuesday of students who will be out because of illness, emergency, etc. This is the fastest and most comprehensive way of letting the parent manager know about attendance issues. If you know that your child will be absent sometime in the future or needs to negotiate a special case, please the Managing Director at the same address as soon as you are aware of the situation. The Managing Director will contact the appropriate director who will contact you as quickly as possible. Perfect Attendance Policy Our Perfect Attendance Policy has changed from years prior to honor those who truly have perfect attendance. Because attendance is such an integral part of a choral ensemble, those students with Perfect Attendance will be honored with a medal at the final concert. In order to achieve Perfect Attendance, a student must have NO ABSENCES neither excused nor unexcused. Behavior Policy We understand that with the great students who make up our choirs, behavior is usually not an issue. However, when behavioral problems do arise, we must have a protocol in place that is fair to the singers involved, their families, and the CCC. Therefore, in the case of behavioral disruptions in rehearsal or performances, we will use the following as a guide: First Offense- student sits with parent manager for the remainder of the rehearsal Second Offense- student sits with parent manager and Director contacts parents to discuss issue Third Offense- Student, Parent and Director formally meet to develop appropriate strategies for helping the student learn how to self-monitor behavior Fourth Offense- Student, Parent and Director meet with the Artistic Director to review behavior and expectations Fifth Offense- Parent and student meet with the Hartt Community Division Director (or her designee) Sixth Offense- student is dismissed from the group and no tuition is refunded. Managers will keep track of where students are in the behavioral process. Each offense (whether it is the same or different) will move the student to the next level of behavioral intervention.
9 9 At Rehearsals Singers are expected to be in place, ready to begin with music and materials at the designated time. be attentive to all directions and follow them quickly. be responsible for knowing assigned music..have a sharpened pencil in the folder. bring a quick, nutritious snack for mid-rehearsal break. handle business matters with the director or manager prior to rehearsal Folders should be neat and organized with the CCC calendar in front. The cost for any unreturned music will be forwarded to the parents from the Community Division. Water is the only allowed beverage. At Performances Singers are expected to be in place, ready to sing, at the designated time. wear the uniform appropriate for their performing group. refrain from wearing perfume or cologne. refrain from consuming dairy products.
