2 2 Musically Speaking President s Message Founders Day Rent Party We are all looking forward to Founder s Day at the Clarion. A day filled with good memories of the Modesto Traditional Jazz Society. In April, we come together to honor our Founders and all the others that have contributed their time and talents through the years. Come and enjoy a variety of music, and several other activities that are scheduled. Plan on having a great day of visiting with friends, dancing, and listening to the line-up of bands sharing their talents to benefit the club. Our April meeting will be held in Room 3 & 4. Spring is in the Raffle Our raffle this month will celebrate Springtime! We will give three free raffle tickets to anyone bringing a raffle donation. We had a terrific raffle last month. Many thanks to everyone that contributed. As always, additional raffle tickets will be 6 for $5. The drawing will be at 4:30. There will also be special tables filled with memorabilia; some items could be yours for a small donation to the club. If you have any items you would want to share or contribute, please let us know. We rely on several sources to keep MTJS alive and healthy. Other than the raffle, our club s income is based on memberships, admissions, donations, and this Rent Party. The money mainly pays for this newsletter, our guest bands, and youth activities. If you haven t been to a meeting in a while please be sure that your dues are current and all your information is up to date, and, especially, that we have your address as we want to start publishing the Jazzette on line and would like to it to you. Thanks! Elections: We are always talking about ways you can help make Modesto Traditional Jazz Society be a better Jazz Club, and April is also the month to think about Board Elections. If you would like to join the MTJS Board, let our vice-president, Mary Menz, or any other Board Member know! This is a great time to share your talents and bring new ideas to the club. Remember also, every guest is a potential new member, so please try to bring a friend or friends to our meeting. Our attendance has decreased over the winter months. We need some new life, so spread the word! Food and Drink: I say this every month, but it is so important. Please remember that the Clarion has been furnishing us this wonderful meeting place for over four years, at no charge. The only way we are able to repay this favor is by ordering from the Hotel Food Service. They bring someone in every meeting to serve us. I realize that, at times there have been issues, but please continue to order food and drink to let them know we appreciate their hospitality. 4 4 9 Notes from Sue I was unable to attend the meeting on March 15 th, but I ve been told that Devil Mountain Jazz Band did an outstanding job. I hope the dance floor saw lots of action. This month is our annual Founders Day/Rent Party and I hope I have chosen bands that will please everyone. Starting off the afternoon at 1 p.m. will be Creole Jazz Kings, followed by newcomers to our club, Hot Club Faux Gitane. Next up will be Ernie Bucio s Little Big Band and last, the Rent Party Band. This is a group of musicians I asked to come and entertain us for an hour and I hope you enjoy them. They are Dan Talbert on trombone, Bob Sakoi on trumpet, Kristy Cocuzzi on reeds, Bonnie Otto on piano, Anthony Palazuelos on drums, Tom Downs on tuba, Kurt & Michele Abell on banjo/guitar. As usual there will be memorabilia from the past on display and cupcakes to celebrate the clubs birthday. So put on your dancing shoes (or your everyday shoes) and come out and eat, drink and make merry! The club board has decided to run the monthly expenses to show the membership how money is spent each month. 5 8 5 MoBand 2015 Sunset Dreams June 4th "Bandstand" June 11th "Cruise Control" June 18th "Satin Latin" June 25th "Net Flicks" July 3rd "Let s Be Patriotic" July 10th "Sweet Dreams" Modesto Band of Stanislaus County Concerts in the Park begin June 4, :00 PM, Graceada Park Rehearsals at Mancini Hall on Tuolumne Blvd. Mondays and Wednesdays 6:30-9:00 Starting June 1 st (Founders Day Continued from page 1) The Bands Formed in 1986, the Creole Jazz Kings have been entertaining audiences in our area with West Coast Jazz, blues, lots of great vocals and swing standards for almost 30 years. Most recently, the Creole Jazz Kings have been playing at Clarion Inn, in Modesto every Wednesday since Hot Club Faux Gitane is an acoustic swing band based in Modesto, that plays in the Gypsy jazz tradition of Django Reinhardt and his Quintette du Hot Club de France. Hot Club Faux Gitane employs the rhythm and lead gui-tars and acoustic bass typical of Gypsy swing, and adds to them man-dolin, bassoon, clarinet, and the occasional melodica. This unique collection of instruments allows the group to capture a vitality and freshness that makes this music new all over again. Similarly, Hot Club Faux Gitane augments the traditional Gypsy repertoire with original compositions, jazz standards, and even Latin tunes all played in the Gypsy jazz style. The Ernie Bucio Little Big Band is the premier swing band in the San Joaquin Valley. The Ernie Bucio Little Big Band performs music from the Jazz/Swing Band era of the 1930's-40's all the way up to modern jazz. The group can be a "little big band" of about 8 musicians with an approximate instrumentation of 2-3 saxophones, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, 2-3 rhythm section (drums & bass/piano) and a vocalist. The fully complimented "big band" has an instrumentation of about 16 pieces. The instrumentation of this group includes 5 saxophones, 2-3 trumpets, 2-3 trombones, full rhythm section (piano, bass, drums & guitar) and a vocalist. The last act of the day is the 2015 MTJS Rent Party Jazz Band. Featuring some of Northern California's best musicians, this band will have you tapping your toes and shuffling on the dance floor. Band personnel include Dan Talbert, trombone; Kristy Cocuzzi, reeds; Bob Sakoi, trumpet; Bonnie Otto, piano; Anthony Palazuelos, drums; Tom Downs, tuba; and Kurt & Athens Abell on banjo/guitar.
