1 Rules Click on a subject to read the rules and regulations. Failure to comply with the rules of the Rotary Burlington Music Festival could result in disqualification, preventing eligibility for scholarships and/or Provincial recommendation. ONLINE REGISTRATION YOU are responsible for the accuracy of your selection(s) and the content you provide. If you make an error, we may not be able to change it in some situations where we are able to correct your error, an administration fee of $10 per error will apply. Please Read Carefully. An incorrect registration may result in disqualification at the adjudicator s discretion. The Rotary Burlington Music Festival (RBMF) does not accept the responsibility to check the festival registration for accuracy. It is the responsibility of the teacher and student to ensure that the selection to be performed is registered in the correct class. It is impossible to make changes to registrations after the close of the online registration. TEACHERS: ensure that you have provided the correct class codes and descriptions for each of your students. 1. Online registration will open on August 1, It will close at midnight September 30, 2016.

2 Late entries will not be accepted. Do not wait until the last day to register because if you have difficulty registering, time will NOT be sufficient to address any issues or concerns. It is impossible to make changes to registrations after the close of the online registration. 2. Entry fees will not be refunded in the event that a participant cannot attend their scheduled class(es). 3. The teacher and participant are responsible for registering selections in the correct class/class code. The Rotary Burlington Music Festival does not validate the registrations. 4. Note: A $10 administration fee will apply for any requested changes made to an existing registration. Any amount less than $5 will NOT be refunded. Please ensure that your registration is accurate before submitting. 5. A selection may not be used in more than one class. 6. Participants may not use a selection that they have performed in a previous Rotary Burlington Music Festival. 7. Participants are limited to one entry per class, unless otherwise noted. 8. Participants must enter at their current grade level of study. Even though the RCM allows one selection at a higher grade/level, the RBMF requires that all selections be at the current grade/ level. 9. The 2016 syllabus offers both Competitive and Non-Competitive classes in all solo instrument categories. Non-Competitive class participants will receive written and verbal adjudications, but no marks, placements or medals. Non-Competitive participants are not eligible for scholarships. 10. If the participant is planning to enter Provincials, CHOOSE selections and grade/ level carefully. If performers are entered in more than one grade/level, their grade/level will be considered as the one in which the majority of their entries lie. Participants who aspire to a recommendation to Provincials are encouraged to enter in two or more classes in their category. This will ensure the adjudicator can accurately assess the artistic level of the participant. Classical Voice festival participants who wish to be considered for Provincial recommendation must register in at least one graded voice class (category: List A; category: List B; category: List C; category: Concert Class). 11. For all duets, duo, trio, quartet and ensemble classes, only one participant will register and pay the class fee. Please remember to list all duet, duo, trio and quartet partners on your registration form in the appropriate field.

3 12. Schedules showing dates and times of competition will be posted on the online registration account of the participant and to the teacher s online account (if the teacher s festival ID was included in the registration). These schedules must be shown if they are requested by a Festival Official. The Festival will strive to schedule classes labelled adult/mature in the evenings or on weekends to accommodate work schedules. School groups will be scheduled during school hours. GENERAL 1. All matters not dealt with in these Rules and Regulations must be referred to the Rotary Burlington Music Festival Board of Directors in writing. Their decision will be final and binding. 2. All classes are open to amateurs. An amateur shall be defined as: any person whose principal means of livelihood is not derived from the profession of music. No professionals, other than accompanists, are eligible to perform. 3. In age limit classes, age will be determined as of December 31 of the current year. Proof of age may be requested. Birthdates must be entered on the registration form. 4. The Festival reserves the right to refuse any entry or cancel any class, in which case entry fees will be refunded. In no other circumstances will the entry fees be refunded. 5. The Festival reserves the right to divide or combine classes. 6. PLEASE NOTE: The Festival runs from Monday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Participants are expected to play at their scheduled time. Absolutely no changes will be made once the programme has been printed. Entry fees will not be refunded in the event that a participant cannot attend their scheduled class(es). ADJUDICATION 1. 5 information and to register for this class, refer to category: Festival Gala Scholarship and class 12u (Grades 9-Advanced) in the Scholarship Class section of the syllabus. 4. The Rotary Club of Burlington Central annually gives the Robert O. Elstone Memorial Scholarship to a most promising student at the RCM Grade/Level 6-9 in memory of Robert O. Elstone, Festival Co-Founder, and in honour of his contributions to the Rotary Club of Burlington Central. This year, in memory of his late wife Lyla, who passed away in January, 2016 and who created a lasting legacy as ambassador of the Rotary Burlington Music Festival, the scholarship is renamed the Elstone Memorial Scholarship and two deserving young people will each receive a $ scholarship within this class. The scholarships will be named the Robert O. Elstone Scholarship and the Lyla J. Elstone Scholarship. This scholarship class, the Elstone Memorial Scholarship Class, is open to performers who reside in the Hamilton/Halton region in ALL solo instrument and voice categories. The competitors will be selected by each festival adjudicator based on merit and level of performance during the festival weeks; therefore all Festival participants fitting the above criteria will be eligible for selection. Each adjudicator will select the repertoire to be performed chosen from one of the selections performed at the festival. The adjudicator s choice is final and no other selection can be chosen by the participant. Each participant will receive a written and verbal adjudication, but no marks will be awarded. NOTE: 1) The previous year s winner of the Elstone scholarship is not eligible to compete even if chosen by an adjudicator. 2.) Registration for this class is not required. Candidates will be contacted prior to the competition time. This competition will be scheduled after all competitive classes have been heard. 5. Adjudicators will recommend participants to perform at the Grand Festival Concert, based on artistic excellence and greatest potential talent. 6. At the Grand Festival Concert, two adjudicators, specifically chosen for the event and not participating in earlier Festival events will select recipients for: The Irish Family Scholarships for The Most Promising Student and runner-up The Most Promising Young Performer scholarship and the runner-up.

6 Sandra Brewer Founder s Scholarship for Most Outstanding Intermediate Performer The winner of the Irish Family Most Promising Student scholarship is not eligible to receive the same award in the following year. SCHOLARSHIPS To be eligible for an individual scholarship in piano, voice, music theatre, strings, speech arts, brass and woodwind or guitar, participants must enter and compete in a minimum of three solo classes in the same discipline. The selections performed in the Canadian Composer Classes must be original compositions by a Canadian composer. Arrangements are not permitted. The Festival expects all performers, teachers and coaches to respect copyright; we ask that all material you provide to adjudicators and to accompanists be from purchased, not photocopied, sources. If you purchase and download music from the internet, present the adjudicator proof of purchase for every score used (the scores for the adjudicator, the accompanist and for you). Where it appears that copyright has not been respected, the adjudicators will award the merited mark; however, the participant will be disqualified from receiving any awards, medals or recommendations.
