4 Director s Welcome Welcome to Duneira s fourth year of events, our March to May program. Duneira has come alive with its wide-ranging activities; it is a living cultural centre that aims to invigorate and inspire people of all ages and stages in life. Come and enjoy Duneira for its rare and historically important botanical plants, its significant library featuring antiquarian books, its artwork collection and its concert series. The 1875 historic Victorian homestead is in excellent condition and is warm and inviting as it is still a much loved family home. We continue to provide a canvas to explore new ideas, offer the chance to converse with inspiring guest lecturers and, with our health and wellbeing series, make available opportunities to learn to look after yourself. One should never stop learning, and so our educational activities and courses are expanding, with Chinese language courses, art classes, meditation and performing arts therapy for children with learning needs. Also Gateways (a state primary school gifted education program) will offer more courses. More information can be provided upon request. We welcome private bookings for private functions, such as tour groups (garden, house, art), student visits, conferences and staff training days and can help with catering on request. Our cultural activities are unique in Australia s cultural setting, generously supported by the S.R. Stoneman Foundation, in the manner of the great European and American philanthropic collections. Less than one hour out of Melbourne, with its own magical climate and fresh air, Duneira is a place of timeless elegance and beauty, with a touch of old England. Come and enjoy. Be inspired! Dr Jacqueline Ogeil Stoneman & His Vision Duneira s seventh owner, Stuart Rusden Stoneman, was born in Castlemaine in He was the only son of local businessman Thomas Stoneman and became the third generation of the Stoneman family to work in the grocery industry. Motivated by a grand vision and study undertaken overseas in 1950, Stuart returned to Castlemaine and implemented self-service grocery stores eventually developing the business into the successful Stoneman s Supermarket chain with additional stores in Bendigo, Echuca and Ballarat. Upon his death in 2002, Duneira was bequeathed to the care of The S.R. Stoneman Foundation to manage for the benefit of local and broader communities. Stoneman s vision for Duneira was to maintain and preserve Duneira, to open it to the public, on a smaller scale but in the spirit of the Huntington Collection in California, and for it to continue to be a place where people have the opportunity to learn and relax in an aesthetically cultivated environment; to enable interested individuals and groups to have access to the property; to view and examine the various collections and attractions; and in certain instances to enjoy suitable social and other functions. 4

8 Lectures Lectures &Courses 88 Tours Lectures & Courses
9 Lectures & Courses Games Composers Play A series of three lectures by John O Donnell How do composers compose? Inspiration, divine or otherwise, is the commonly accepted explanation, but Edison s 10 per cent inspiration and 90 per cent perspiration applies just as much to composition as to invention. Beyond this, many composers over the ages have used a seemingly endless array of stimuli to challenge or spur on the compositional process: alphabets, palindromes, numbers, labyrinths, codes, imitations of nature, games of chance. In a series of three lectures with musical illustrations, internationally acclaimed musicologist and performer John O Donnell explores these games of the mind in music from medieval to modern times. John O Donnell was educated at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he was appointed Lecturer in Academic Studies at the age of eighteen. In 1974 he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Music at the Victorian College of the Arts, where he subsequently served a term as Dean, and in 1990 he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Musicology at the University of Melbourne. He is the first person ever to perform Bach s complete keyboard works in public. His recordings of the complete keyboard works of Johann Caspar Kerll (which he had previously edited for the Viennese publisher Doblinger) and organ works of Bach have met with international acclaim, an album of the latter named Best Recording of the Year (2000) in the International Record Review. DATE TIME COST Saturdays: 23 March, 13 April, 4 May 12.00pm 1.00pm $35 full / $25 conc per session $95 full / $80 conc for series Lectures & Courses 9

This illustrated talk will highlight some of the most interesting examples from the collection and will outline their place of origin, their technique and the symbolism of their designs. The talk will also include a discussion of the ways in which oriental carpets have been appreciated and used in European settings over the centuries. Susan Scollay is an art historian and curator specialising in the arts of the Islamic world and in historic textiles. She is a contributing editor to the prestigious, London-based journal, HALI: carpet, textile and Islamic art. She was the specialist guest co-curator of the exhibition, Love and Devotion: From Persia and Beyond at the State Library of Victoria in 2012 and at the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, in 2012 and DATE TIME COST Saturday 23 March 10.45am 11.45am $35 full / $25 conc 10 Lectures & Courses
11 Lectures & Courses Organic Electronic Materials: A Licence to Print Money Professor Andrew Holmes Polymers (plastics) are usually regarded as insulating materials. This view of polymers was turned on its head when it was discovered that certain kinds of polymers can be made to conduct electricity as efficiently as metallic copper. They can also be used as semiconductors. Imagine a plastic sandwich being connected to a battery and giving out light. This talk will illustrate the electronics revolution in which organic materials can be printed on plastic and used in TVs, solar cells and as transistors. The ultimate goal of the work is to print solar cells on polymer substrates in a manner similar to the current technology for printing the Australian polymer banknote. Professor Andrew Holmes works in the CSIRO Division of Materials Science and Engineering (CSIRO Fellow); University of Melbourne School of Chemistry, Bio21 Institute (Melbourne Laureate Professor of Chemistry); and Imperial College Department of Chemistry (Emeritus Professor and Distinguished Research Fellow). In May 2010 he was the Robert Robinson Lecturer and in was the Newton Abraham Visiting Professor at Oxford. 19 Concerts Songmakers and Piazzolla: Music and Songs of Argentina Songmakers Australia Nicholas Dinopoulos, bass-baritone Andrea Katz, piano Susannah Ng, violin Blair Harris, cello One of Australia s most vibrant vocal ensembles, Songmakers Australia, make their début at Duneira with an exploration of the music and songs of Argentina s most revered and reviled composer, Astor Piazzolla. Opening with Otoño Porteño, we will follow him not just through the seasons, but also explore the streets, the times and pulse of his favourite city. His songs, less well known than his instrumental music, will take us to his exiles and his triumphs from Paris to Rome and back to his only true love, Buenos Aires. Astor Piazzolla: Otoño Porteño, Balada para un loco, Escualo, Invierno Porteño, Balada para mi muerte, La Muerte del Angel, Primavera Porteña, Milonga carrieguera, Milonga sin palabras, Chiquilín de Bachín, Verano Porteño, Preludio per l anno 3001, Libertango. 20 Concerts Joe Chindamo, piano & Zoe Black, violin This collaboration between two celebrated artists from different worlds has immediately established itself as a formidable force in Australian chamber music. Black has long been thought of as a violinist s violinist, and pianist/composer Joe Chindamo s eclectic musical gifts place him in a class of his own. In the quest to seek new musical avenues, it has become fashionable for classical artists to indulge in crossover projects. The Black/Chindamo union is not a classical/jazz crossover à la Jacques Loussier, but rather the product of two artists creating a musical dialogue with a combined language, resulting in a new music altogether. The repertoire largely consists of reinventions of works by the masters as Busoni and Rachmaninov did in their day and a plethora of purely original composition by Joe Chindamo and a few unlikely surprises. Together, Joe and Zoe are creating an entirely new genre of Australian music, combining lyricism, urbane rhythms, a modern romanticism, making this music thrilling, passionate and alive. DATE TIME COST Saturday 4 May 2.30pm 3.30pm $35 full / $25 conc 20 Concerts
21 Concerts Arcadia: Trio Sonatas of the Baroque Davide Monti, violin Lucinda Moon, violin Edwina Cordingley, cello Jacqueline Ogeil, harpsichord If you love the string quartet genre this concert is for you. The trio sonata is the outstanding chamber genre of the Baroque, occupying a place filled by the string quartet in subsequent eras. Trio suggests three players, but for most trio sonatas four performers is the norm owing to the presence of a keyboard player who plays the bass line with the cello (or other bass instrument) while realising the harmonies. Purcell, Corelli and Leclair are among the major composers of trio sonatas, each contributing a distinct national flavour to the genre. Accademia Arcadia is a baroque chamber ensemble of high originality. Known simply as Arcadia, this company was formed by Jacqueline Ogeil in Its début CD of Buxtehude Cantatas for the Tall Poppies label, including world première recordings of five cantatas, has won international critical acclaim as has its second CD of Handel s Italian Cantatas. In 2007 Arcadia s CD Trio sonatas, released with Tall Poppies, was a finalist for the ARIA award in classical music. In 2010 Arcadia accompanied the Victorian opera s production of Xerxes in the new Murdoch Recital Hall. DATE TIME COST Saturday 25 May 2.30pm 3.30pm $35 full / $25 conc Italian Concerts Lessons 21 21
