College of the Arts School of Music E0 Center f the Perfming Arts Kent Campus schoolofmusic@kent.edu Description The Bachel of Music degree in Music Education prepares students f Ohio licensure to teach music in grades K- in chal general and instrumental music. The program includes studies in jazz, folk, musical theatre, wld music and music technology, while providing a strong grounding in Western art music histy, they and perfmance. The Music Education maj comprises the following concentrations: Chal General Instrumental Fully Offered At: Kent Campus Accreditation The B.M. degree in Music Education is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Admission Requirements The university affirmatively strives to provide educational opptunities and access to students with varied backgrounds, those with special talents and adult students who graduated from high school three me years ago. Admission to this maj is selective. Students must audition befe being admitted to the Music maj. English Language Proficiency Requirements f International Students: All international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions) by earning a minimum 55 TOEFL sce (7 on the Internet-based version), minimum 75 MELAB sce, minimum 6.0 IELTS sce minimum 48 PTE Academic sce, by completing the ELS level Intensive Program. Requirements f Admission to Advanced Study f Art Education and Music Education Admission to advanced study is required of all teacher education majs and mins pri to enrolling in upper-division education courses. Upon completion of coursewk, as determined by program area, students should have satisfied the prerequisites f admission to advanced study. Students must submit an application f advanced study by the second Friday of the term during which all prerequisites f advanced study will be completed, and at least one semester pri to beginning any coursewk f which "Admission to Advanced Study" is a prerequisite. Students at the Kent Campus apply f Advanced Study through the College of Education, Health and Human Services Student Ptal, which can be accessed through the Vacca Office of Student Services web page ( directly at the WHHS Student Ptal. Students completing a licensure program at a regional campus should check with that campus f instructions on how to apply f "Advanced Study." Please note: Admission to advanced study is required f students pursuing an undergraduate maj that leads to teacher licensure. Requirements f Admission to Advanced Study f Art Education and Music Education College Writing: Students are required to attain a minimum C grade in each writing courses (ENG 0 and ENG 0 equivalent). Pre-Advanced Study Coursewk: To be eligible f advanced study, students must earn a minimum C grade in CULT 955 and a minimum C grade in one of the following courses (please note that a minimum C grade must be earned in all of the four courses f teacher licensure programs): EPSY 955 ETEC 955 SPED 000 Grade Point Average: Art Education majs must have earned a minimum.750 cumulative GPA and a minimum.750 maj GPA in der to be admitted to Advanced Study. Music Education majs must have earned a minimum.500 cumulative GPA and a minimum.750 maj GPA in der to be admitted to Advanced Study. Advising Appointment: Art Education and Music Education students should make an advising appointment with a professional advis in the Vacca Office of Student Services ( Regional Campus advising office if completing the program at that campus) f infmation about applying f Advanced Study and educat licensure. Advising appointments at the Kent Campus are made through the Vacca Office of Student Services' website at Teacher Candidate Acknowledgments and Legal Questions f Licensure: Candidates are required to electronically sign four statements acknowledging that they have read and understand the following areas: background check requirements; professional dispositions; licensure application infmation; legal questions asked on the licensure application. Statements can be found on the student ptal. Standardized Testing: All Art Education and Music Education majs are required to demonstrate basic competencies in reading, writing and mathematics befe progressing in a degree program. Students are required to take the Praxis Ce ( Alternative Praxis) if they have Music Education - B.M.

2 Kent State University Catalog not adequately demonstrated the competencies through the ACT, SAT and/ COMPASS exams (f qualifying students). Alternative Praxis tests are available f students who do not pass Praxis Ce. Infmation regarding Praxis Ce is available in the Vacca Office of Student Services, 04 White Hall, in the student services offices of the Regional Campuses and at Students must have all passing standardized test sces on file in 04 White Hall pri to submission of application f admission to advanced study. The specific competencies are listed below (Note: The COMPASS placement test is f qualifying students and is taken solely f placement into freshman-level courses and cannot be taken f any other purpose): Reading: minimum 6 ACT reading sce 60 SAT verbal sce 9 COMPASS reading sce 56 Praxis Ce reading sce. University Requirements All students in a bachel's degree program at Kent State University must complete the following university requirements f graduation. NOTE: University requirements may be fulfilled in this program by specific course requirements. Please see Program Requirements f details. Destination Kent State: First Year Experience Course is not required f students with 5 transfer credits, excluding College Credit Plus, age + at time of admission. Diversity Domestic/Global (DIVD/DIVG) Students must successfully complete one domestic and one global course, of which one must be from the Kent Ce. 3 Kent State University Catalog Chal General Instrumental Minimum Total Credit Hours: Applied music (7 semesters and 4 total credits: 4 semesters and 8 credits at 6000 level, semesters and 6 credits at level) based on instrument of acceptance into the music education maj. The level can be taken following a successful level barrier exam. The Chal General Concentration is f guitar, voice and piano principals. Piano and guitar principals with significant instrumental background may elect the Instrumental Concentration with the approval of the Codinat of Music Education. All other students use the Instrumental Concentration. Maj ensemble (7 separate semesters): Students must enroll in a maj ensemble appropriate to their maj perfmance area. Students in the Chal General concentration should choose chal based courses, students in Instrumental concentration should choose the instrument based courses. Guitar principals may elect MUS 45 MUS 45 f a total of two semesters to replace maj ensembles. All courses in the Kent Ce Composition must be completed with a minimum C grade. Students are limited to two administrations of the Music Education Professional Evaluation, and must pass all sections in der to continue in the music education program with MUS 4, MUS 4, MUS 44 MUS 44. 4 4 Kent State University Catalog Attendance at minimum 84 concerts recitals f students who begin the program as first semester freshmen (students who transferred from a non-music program university must attend an average of 0 music concerts recitals f semesters of full time enrollment) Completion of one-half seni recital, which may not be perfmed during the student-teaching period, and registration of applied music courses (46000 level) during a degree recital semester MUS 0, MUS, MUS 694 and MUS 695 will not count as credit f graduation in this program.
