2 MUSICAL ARTS PERFORMING ARTS VISUAL ARTS Jones County Junior College has mastered the art of providing fine arts to its students. Jones boasts a highly qualified faculty specializing in the full spectrum of the arts. Musically and visually, Jones students are exposed to a wide variety of opportunities to showcase their talents. Students can seek admission through auditioning for performing groups such as Concert Band Concert Choir Marching Band JC Voices and JC Jazz Small Ensembles Symphonic Band Theater Fine Arts (noun) 1. Art produced or intended primarily for beauty rather than utility. Any of the art forms, such as sculpture, painting, or music, used to create such art. Often used in the plural. 2. Something requiring highly developed techniques and skills: the fine art of teaching. Students enjoy an impressive mix of classroom instruction and performance participation in the Fine Arts program. From the concert halls in New York to the streets of California, to the gallery on campus, and beyond, students are offered extensive opportunities for artistic growth. Performing groups are open to non-music majors as well as music majors. Service award scholarships are available for qualified participants in band, jazz band, choir, JC Voices, show choir, and musical theater. Auditions are held throughout the year.

3 MAROON TYPHOON CONCERT SYMPHONIC BAND T he Jones County Junior College Maroon Typhoon is made up of more than 200 students representing every major and course of study on campus. The Maroon Typhoon has made numerous nationally televised performances, including the Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, NY; King Orange Bowl Parade in Miami, Florida; and the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. Other national performances include the State Street Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago, Illinois, and the Veteran s Day National Parades in New York, NY, and Washington, D.C. Marching band meets three days per week, and students receive two hours of credit after completion of the semester. All students enrolled in the Maroon Typhoon marching band receive a Fine Arts Service Award Scholarship. The Symphonic and Concert Bands meet in the spring semester and are open to students by audition. Each band meets two days per week, and students completing the semester receive one hour of credit. Students enrolled in either Symphonic or Concert band receive a Fine Arts Service Scholarship.

4 VOICE CONCERT CHOIR JC VOICES JCJC s vocal instructors are wellknown for their musical talents and teaching abilities. Jones students grow musically in a challenging, yet motivating environment that ultimately prepares them to sing on world-class stages like Carnegie Hall. JCJC Concert Choir This vocal group is recognized for its talent and incredible ability to steal the show. The Jones Concert Choir has taken the stage in New York City s famed Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center s Avery Fisher Hall. They have performed with the Atlanta Ballet, the Annapolis Chamber Orchestra, the New England Symphonic Ensemble, the Kent (Michigan) Philharmonic Orchestra, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. The choir has been privileged to premiere new music and has made three recordings. This choir knows how to hold an audience spellbound. JC Voices JC Voices is JCJC s premiere small vocal ensemble. This chamber group performs a wide variety of musical arrangements from the Renaissance period to contemporary numbers. This ensemble performs for various functions on campus like Christmas with the Arts and Java and Jazz. The group also enjoys touring throughout the community. JCJC Concert Choir

5 INSTRUMENTAL SMALL ENSEMBLES Jones County Junior College is the only two-year college in Mississippi that offers a wide variety of small ensemble groups featuring each instrument. JCJC ensembles prepare musicians for further study and performance of their instrument in a setting unique to most colleges. JCJC is home to the only Horn Choir (French horn) in any two-year college in the state. Current and former members of this ensemble have performed at the Southeast Horn Workshop as competitors and soloists with the University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. Performance highlights for each ensemble include the following: Flute Choir and Brass Ensemble Christmas with the Arts JC Jazz and Percussion Ensemble Java and Jazz concerts Guitar Ensemble Regional Guitar Festival Pep Band Musical excitement at athletic events No other two-year college in Mississippi provides as many opportunities for specialty groups to perform and study in a creative and intense learning atmosphere with qualified faculty in every area of music. 6 POTTERY PAINTING DRAWING GRAPHIC DESIGN A rt majors at Jones explore traditional and contemporary concepts. Led by exhibiting instructors, students will become practiced in drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture and graphic design. T he Eula Bass Lewis Gallery exhibits student works, as well as regional artists. As sophomores, students take part in preparation and installation of their own parting exhibition.

7 PERFORMING ARTS THEATER MUSICALS The Jones Theater department has a history of producing blockbuster musicals like Grease, Oklahoma!, Little Shop of Horrors, You re A Good Man Charlie Brown, The Music Man and Chicago. Auditions are held in the fall semester and are open to all JCJC students. Participating students receive three hours of credit and may be eligible for a scholarship. Let your imagination wander into the spotlight where your talent can flourish. JONES ONSTAGE Performing some thirty shows per year, this highlyacclaimed ensemble is featured on campus and in community events throughout the region. Jones Onstage has hosted FAME Chicago and FAME New York national high school show choir competitions. Their dynamic vocals draw from a repertoire ranging across the spectrum of musical styles.

8 Frequently ASKED QUESTIONS From affordable tuition and service scholarships to financial aid and grants, Jones offers endless opportunities for learning, travel, and performing. Faculty PROFILE How do I enroll? All performance groups, band, choir, and small ensembles are by audition only. Nonmusic majors are welcome to audition. You will be notified if you are selected, and an advisor will be assigned to you to help you enroll in classes. What fees are involved with the music & art programs? JCJC provides uniforms for many of its performing groups; however, there may be costs involved with some performing groups. Art classes may require purchase of some supplies. Woodwinds Marching Band Flute-Clarinet Choir Are scholarships available? Scholarships are available to music majors and non-music majors who are invited to join a performing group. Most scholarships are full tuition or are combined, if you are in more than one performing group, to equal full tuition. When are auditions? Auditions are posted on the fine arts webpage. Some performing groups have special auditions, usually held in the fall and spring. Check the web page for announcements. Are there travel opportunities? The marching band alternates years with the concert choir to participate in various performances throughout the U.S. and abroad. Both groups travel regionally for various performances. Jones OnStage makes regional appearances throughout the year and may travel nationally to participate as guests of FAME national show choir competitions.
