1 Throughout the year, students will master certain skills that are important to a student's understand ng of Fine Arts concepts and demonstrated throughout all objectives. Perception Objective THE STUDENT DESCRIBES AND ANALYZES MUSICAL SOUND AND DEMONSTRATES MUSICAL ARTISTRY. (a) demonstrate characteristic vocal or instrumental timbre individually and in groups; Students will differentiate between tall, open vowels and those that are nasal or altered by singing too loudly or too softly or lacking air support. Students will demonstrate how opening the mouth, using the tongue, teeth, lips, and soft palate affects the tone. Students will demonstrate the difference in volume and air support needed when singing alone and when singing in groups of different sizes. 8.1 THE STUDENT DESCBES AND ANALYZES MUSICAL SOUND AND DEMONSTRATES MUSICAL ARTISTRY. (b) describe in detail intervals, music notation, musical instruments or voices and musical s, using standard terminology; and Mathematics Objective 1 Perception The student is expected to identify: whole-notes, halfnotes, quarter-notes, eighth-notes, sixteenthnotes and various dotted notes, their respective rests and their relationship to fractions. In addition, students will identify: names of notes, on the treble and bas clefs, the purpose of sharps and flats in determining key signatures. 2 PASADENA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL D STRICT and aurally identify all major intervals of up to one octave and demonstrate through singing and taking dictation using solfa syllables those intervals. 8.1 THE STUDENT DESCBES AND ANALYZES MUSICAL SOUND AND DEMONSTRATES MUSICAL ARTISTRY. (c) identify music forms presented aurally and through music notation. Perception Students will identify simple forms (AB, ABA, Theme and Variation) on unisonline tunes and simple solos and 2, 3, and 4 part choral music. 8.2 THE STUDENT SINGS OR PLAYS AN INSTRUMENT, INDIVIDUALLY AND IN GROUPS, PERFORMING A VARIED REPERTOIRE OF MUSIC. (a) perform independently with accurate intonation and rhythm, demonstrating fundamental skills and basic techniques; Students will demonstrate correct posture and correct breathing technique to produce a clear, resonant sound while singing either songs with text or solfa syllables. Students will demonstrate the proper way to stand with hands placed at the side and facing the director. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the concept of matching pitch with each other and balancing chords within the full-ensemble. Intermediate School Choir - Grade Eight Page 2

(b) perform expressively, incorporating appropriate stylistic qualities; TAKS Objective Objectives 1 & 2 Social Studies Grade 8 Objectives 1,2,3, &4 Strand/Theme Strategy Students will perform moderately difficult to difficult music with printed music and from memory music from various styles and languages/cultures (Spanish, Latin, Italian, German and French) and show: Proper diction and treatment of vowels and consonants Knowledge of and proper pronunciation of diphthongs in the English language Understanding of text meaning when singing foreign languages The effect that significant events in history and politics of the country had on the music 8.2 THE STUDENT SINGS OR PLAYS AN INSTRUMENT, INDIVIDUALLY AND IN GROUPS, PERFORMING A VARIED REPERTOIRE OF MUSIC. (c) perform, from memory and notation, a varied repertoire of music representing styles from diverse cultures; and Objectives 1 & 2 Social Studies Grade 8 Objectives 1, 2, 3, &4 Students will perform moderately difficult to difficult music with printed music and from memory music from various styles and languages/cultures (Spanish, Latin, Italian, German and French) and show: Proper diction and treatment of vowels and consonants Knowledge of and proper pronunciation of diphthongs in the English language Understanding of text meaning when singing foreign languages The effect that significant events in history and politics of the country had on the music Intermediate School Choir - Grade Eight PageS

4 8.2 THE STUDENT SINGS OR PLAYS AN INSTRUMENT, INDIVIDUALLY AND IN GROUPS, PERFORMING A VARIED REPERTOIRE OF MUSIC. (d) demonstrate appropriate small- and large-ensemble techniques during formal and in formal concerts. The student will learn to distinguish the difference in techniques used for singing at formal concerts and for singing in front of peers in the classroom. 8.3 THE STUDENT READS AND WRITES MUSIC NOTATION. (a) sight-read music in treble and/or other clefs in various keys and meters; Students, using 2-part, 3- part and 4-part choral music will sight-read in the keys of :F, C and G using solfa syllables in the meters of 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, and 6/8. r\ 8.3 THE STUDENT READS AND WRITES MUSIC NOTATION. Objective 4 Expression/ The student will learn to transfer information and terms written on vocal scores to actual vocal. This information will include: Phrases in regard to shape, length and appropriate areas to breathe Dynamics Tempo and style Proper articulation or usage of vowels and consonants in English and other languages Staccato and legato 8.4 THE STUDENT CREATES AND ARRANGES MUSIC WITHIN SPECIFIED GUIDELINES. (a) create complex rhythmic and melodic phrases; and Writing Grade 7 Objectives 1,2, 3, &5 The student will create original work utilizing some of the following methods: Creating an eight-bar melodic phrase Choosing existing poetry to use as text for a already existing tune Writing original text for an already existing tune Writing original melodic lines with text Adding a simple harmony 8.4 THE STUDENT CREATES AND ARRANGES MUSIC SITHIN SPECIFIED GUIDELINES. (a) classify aurally-presented music representing diverse styles, periods, and cultures; TAKS Objective Objectives 1 & 2 Social Studies Grade 8 Objectives 1,2, 3, &4 Strand/Theme cultural heritage Strategy music from various styles, languages and cultures (Spanish, Latin, Italian, German, and French). Students will aurally identify Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Twentieth Century music and genres within those periods such as: madrigals, fugues, chorales, spirituals, a capella, jazz, and rock and roll. /""* 8.5 THE STUDENT RELATES MUSIC TO HISTORY, TO SOCIETY, AND TO CULTURE. (b) describe music-related vocations and avocations; Historical/ cultural heritage The student will submit a written or power-point presentation detailing a music profession of their choice. The report will include: Education or training required A person whom they studied in this profession Salary A brief description of the job A works cited list Page6

(c) perform music representative of diverse cultures, including American and Texas heritage; and Historical/ Objectives 1 & 2 cultural heritage Social Studies Grade 8 Objectives 1,2, 3, &4 Students will perform moderately difficult to difficult music with printed music and from memory music from various styles and languages/cultures (Spanish, Latin, Italian, German and French) and show: Proper diction and treatment of vowels and consonants Knowledge of and proper pronunciation of diphthongs in the English language Understanding of text meaning when singing foreign languages The effect that significant events in history and politics of the country had on the music 8.5 THE STUDENT RELATES MUSIC TO HISTORY, TO SOCIETY, AND TO CULTURE. (d) identify the relationships between the content, the concepts, and the processes of the other fine arts, other subjects, and those of music, Historical/ cultural heritage The student will listen to, perform, and identify content of music, art and literature from various historical periods such as symphonies, ballets, operas, art songs, musical theatre, and movie soundtracks. (a) design and apply criteria for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of music and musical ; The student will view live concerts and audio-tapes of school concerts, Texas All- State choirs, and TMEA Honor Choirs. As part of the critique, students will demonstrate an understanding of and be able to comment on the following musical concepts: Proper diction in regards to languages sung Balance with regard to balance within sections person to person and balance section to section Proper intonation and listening skills of the performers Vocal quality Interpretation of phrases and dynamic textures Articulation of words and placement of vowels 8.6 THE STUDENT RESPONDS TO AND EVALUATES MUSIC AND MUSICAL PERFORMANCES.
