Jesus Manuel Berard, Music Director Welcome to the 53rd season of your Philharmonic! It s a great thing when an orchestra reflects its community.

We begin with the stunning 1993 work, Pageant and Proclamation by George Walker, local son and first African-American composer to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

We celebrate the Austro-German classical tradition with Wagner s intimate and romantic Siegfried Idyll (a birthday present to his bride), and Beethoven s Seventh Symphony which Wagner dubbed the

4 Jesus Manuel Berard, Music Director Welcome to the 53rd season of your Philharmonic! It s a great thing when an orchestra reflects its community. Diversity is one of Prince George s County s greatest strengths, and this season s repertoire is as extraordinary and diverse as our orchestra, and you, our listeners. We begin with the stunning 1993 work, Pageant and Proclamation by George Walker, local son and first African-American composer to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Teenage powerhouse Charlotte Marckx, 2018 Johansen International Competition winner, plays the Russian giant, Tchaikovsky s Violin Concerto, and Schumann s Third Symphony takes us on a Rhine journey. We celebrate the Austro-German classical tradition with Wagner s intimate and romantic Siegfried Idyll (a birthday present to his bride), and Beethoven s Seventh Symphony which Wagner dubbed the Apotheosis of the Dance. Maryland s mezzo-soprano Laura Zuiderveen returns with more Mahler: his deeply moving expression of maternal love and loss, Kindertotenlieder. The season continues with Rimsky-Korsakov s huge Russian Easter Festival Overture, while we celebrate the talent of our county s young musicians with a Side-by-Side performance of Norwegian composer Grieg s Peer Gynt music, and Italian Baroque composer Vivaldi s Gloria with Dawn Jones Northwestern High School Visual and Performing Arts Choir. We cross back to this side of the Atlantic for Mexican Carlos Chavez lively Sinfonia India (chock full of native percussion instruments) and the world premiere of Silver Spring by the Philharmonic s own, composer and clarinetist Mark Simon. Washingtonian soprano Detra Battle sings African-American spirituals set by Margaret Bonds, Harry T. Burleigh and Evelyn Simpson-Curenton, and the program concludes with Dvorak s beloved New World Symphony, based on black spirituals and Native American lore. University of Maryland Professor of Music Rita Sloan returns to the Philharmonic for Mozart s Piano Concerto No. 23 in a cosmic end to our season in celebration of NASA's Goddard 60th anniversary: music from Haydn s The Creation, and British composer Gustav Holst s The Planets, big as the solar system itself - with spectacular visual projections! 5 PRESIDENT'S LETTER I am delighted to welcome you to the Prince George s Philharmonic s 53rd season. The Philharmonic has been through a very challenging and special 52nd season. Just over a year ago, we chose Jesus Manuel Berard to replace our beloved Chuck Ellis, and he accepted our invitation to become the Philharmonic s new Music Director. We began rehearsals last fall, gradually getting to know Manny, while Manny got to know us. And to Susan Pearl, President everyone s delight, we soon found that we Board of Directors were quite a good combination. By the end of last season, with the sounding of the last chords of the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, it was remarked by many members of the audience that the combination of Maestro Berard and the Philharmonic was, in fact, terrific! Each year I think that things cannot get any better, but somehow they seem to keep doing so. We have a wonderful season ahead, with a variety of great music to offer you between now and May We ll have guest soloists that you will never forget, and everything from favorite spirituals to the beloved New World Symphony by Dvorak! Then we ll close the season in May with a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment in Prince George s County of NASA s Goddard Space Flight Center - a performance of Gustav Holst s The Planets, accompanied by NASA s dramatic visuals of the seven planets that are depicted in the music - a not-to-be-missed experience! Students in the Anne Gentry Educational Outreach Program, also known as Symphony Kids, receive one-on-one music lessons with a qualified teacher during the school year, perform in an annual recital, and receive free tickets for their parents/ guardians to attend Philharmonic concerts. In addition, our educational outreach program offers an annual side-by-side for selected students, occasional masterclasses led by our guest artists, and an annual celebration of Music in Our Schools.
