ORCHESTRA/CHAMBER DISCLOSURE DOCUMENT Ms. Jenna Baumgart, Instructor PHILOSOPHY The CHHS Orchestra is a performing ensemble where students will study, learn, and perform literature from the Masters and the Contemporaries. The course involves music reading, proper techniques, basic music theory, and music history and language study. This group requires the student to actively participate both mentally and physically. CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION Participation in the classroom rehearsal activity is essential to a student s individual progress and learning and is critical to the group s success. For this reason, daily rehearsals are considered the assignment for the class and each missed rehearsal must be made-up when missed. Please remember that no matter how valid your reason for missing when you do not attend rehearsal, you prevent the entire group from progressing as a unit. The rehearsal period cannot be duplicated in some other form of make-up work. It is essential that you attend rehearsals each day that class is held. GRADING The student will acquire points for: Participation in classroom activities and performances. Extra rehearsals and sectionals may be called for at the discretion of section leaders under the direction of Ms. Baumgart. Concert reports, assignments, and tests involving writing and performing. Smart Music assignments, playing tests, and required practicing. Chamber orchestra rehearses each Friday morning at 6 a.m. this rehearsal is a requirement of being in this advanced group and is part of the student s grade. 50 points per day, based on the following: 10 Points for Punctuality Being ON TIME 10 Points for Preparation Instrument, music, pencil, assignments 30 Participation Appropriate rehearsal demeanor Demonstrating a positive attitude toward learning Concerts: 500 points per performance: Concert Attendance is mandatory.

2 The concert is the final for this class. Work is not an excuse for missing a concert Region and State Festivals, school fall, Holiday and Spring Concerts will have a greater effect on the grade than other performances. PERFORMANCES CAN NOT BE MADE UP. A parent must make personal contact at least a week before the concert if there is a problem. A student s grade will be lowered if notice is not given in advance of the concer t and the student s membership in the organization will be evaluated Tests, assignments, and reports will be added at the teacher s discretion Grading Scale: The grading scale is based on the accumulated points in the quarter %=A 80-82%=B %=D %=A %=C %=D 89-87%=B %=C 60-62%=D %=B 70-72%=C- 59-0%=F Note: A student who has not made up the work for three or more excused absences cannot receive an A letter grade. A student with two or more unexcused absences cannot receive an A letter grade. If a student is failing the course, failing notices will be sent to parents. SMART MUSIC Smart Music is a computer based practice/assignment/evaluation program we will be using to complete playing and performance assignments and evaluations. We have a limited number of devices at school that students will be able to use to complete assignments and testing, therefore, it is highly recommended that students purchase their own subscription for use in completing assignments and practice requirements at home in a timely fashion. A 12-month subscription costs $20 and will be assessed as a class fee paid to the school. Please see the orchestra handbook, website, call or Ms. Baumgart if you need further clarification or help in setting up an account. MAKE-UP WORK/EXTRA CREDIT Missed work must be made up within two weeks, provided the absences are excused. The student may make up absences in the following ways: 1. Attending a musical concert approved by the teacher and filling out a concert report form. 2. Writing a report on any musical topic. 3. Practicing class music at home and providing proof of it on audiotape. 4. Working in the music department under Ms. Baumgart s direction 5. Preparing and performing a solo in class.

3 Extra credit work may be turned in anytime UP TO ONE WEEK before the end of the quarter. Students may turn in two (2) concert reports per quarter that can count as extra credit. See Ms. Baumgart for concert report forms and approval of the concert you are attending. CLASSROOM RULES 1. Follow directions the first time 2. Use appropriate language 3. No food, gum, or drinks (water is acceptable in a container with a lid) 4. Appropriate conduct toward the teacher and your peers is expected at all times DRESS CODE: DISTRICT POLICY AA 419 District/school policy regarding appropriate dress will be observed CELL PHONES, PAGERS, and ELECTRONIC DEVICES: DISTRICT POLICY AA 419 District/school policy regarding electronic devices will be observed. Students found text messaging during any assignment or test will receive a zero on the assignment/test, regardless of the content of the text message. The test/assignment cannot be made up. Ms. Baumgart is in no way responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged cell phones or electronic devices that are brought into her classroom. ATTENDANCE POLICY We will follow the attendance policy as described in the CHHS student handbook. Students may make-up orchestra class absences with Ms. Baumgart FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS In order to meet the financial obligations of the orchestra, each student has been asked to pay a one-time fee at the beginning of the year. Deadlines must be strictly adhered to. Students will need to pay the Instrument Rental Fee in order to use school-owned instruments (see Instrument Rental Contract for specifics). Additional fees are listed below. Orchestra Participation Fee (district fee) $50 Instrument Rental (full year) $80 Dress (ladies) $75 Tuxedo (men) $99 Uniform Shirt (chamber only) $30 **These fees MUST be paid by the end of the first quarter of school**

4 SUPPLIES The students will be provided the following, free of charge, provided they are kept in good condition. FEES WILL BE ASSESSED FOR LOST MUSIC *Average price per piece of music is $5.00 for replacement* Music (for all performances) Concert Folder (as assigned) Orchestra Folder (containing schedule, forms, etc.) UNIFORMS (see orchestra handbook for more in depth uniform directions) Ladies: Orchestra Dress Nylons and BLACK DRESS shoes Gentlemen: BLACK tuxedo (suit) WHITE dress shirt Matching black bow tie BLACK SOCKS BLACK DRESS SHOES-no athletic shoes Students MUST have proper concert attire, I realize some students may not have any of these items currently in their possession, and may not be able to afford to purchase them. If you are in this situation, please see Ms. Baumgart, privately, so that we can work out other possible options. FUNDRAISING Fundraising is for the benefit of the student. If finances are a concern, the student is encouraged to take advantage of these activities to help defray expenses such as uniforms, tour, cd s, etc. District policy mandates that all money raised through school-sponsored fundraisers must remain in the organization that raised the funds. Funds cannot be refunded, diverted to other clubs, or utilized for personal reasons not connected with the sponsoring organization. 10% of the profits raised by the students will remain in the orchestra account for orchestra use. Eligibility 2.0 GPA Orchestra 2.5 GPA -- Chamber Orchestra A student whose grades drop below the minimum GPA may not be allowed to go on tour or perform at region competition. Poor attendance and poor grades will result in a review of the student s membership in the orchestra and may result in removal from the group.

5 Travel All students must complete a Participation Disclosure and Acknowledgement Document (District form A-2322) in order to be a member of an activity class that travels.
