Bluegrass Learning Jam at Harry s Guitar Shop Handouts for January through June 2018 Songs: All the Good Times Are Past and Gone (key of G) Letter From my Darling (key of G) Little Cabin Home on the Hill (key of A, or key of G with capo on second fret) Love of the Mountains (key of A, or key of G with capo on second fret) Shady Grove (key of A minor) Instrumentals: Clinch Mountain Backstep (key of A, or key of G with capo on second fret)
All the Good Times Are Past and Gone (Key of G) Traditional Waltz (3/4) time Verse/Chorus Verse/Chorus (same chords for both): G C G G D G C G G D G All the good times are past and gone, All the good times are o er. All the good times are past and gone, Little darling don t you weep no more. I wish to the Lord I d never been born, Or died when I was young. I never would have seen your sparkling blue eyes Or heard your lying tongue. Don t you see that turtle dove Flying from pine to pine? He s mourning for his own true love, Just like I mourn for mine. Can t you see that lonesome train, Going around the bend? It s taking away my own true love, To never return again.
Letter From my Darling (Key of G) by Bill Monroe Verse-Chorus Verse and Chorus (same chords for both): D G D I can t answer her letter, For she left me no address. You should know, my little darling, You left my poor heart in distress. I got a letter from my darling, It said she hated to go. It broke my heart, the words she wrote me. She closed by saying, I love you so. She wrote the words she knew word hurt me, She said I never could be true. I tried, I tried my little darling To prove my love was just for you. This letter meant good bye forever, Although we ll have each other s hearts, Our love will fade away in sadness. Precious one, why did we have to part?
Little Cabin Home on the Hill (Key of A) by Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt Verse-Chorus Verse: D A E D A A E D E D A A E
Little Cabin Home on the Hill (Key of A, capo 2) by Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt Verse-Chorus Verse: C G D C G G D C D C G G D
Little Cabin Home on the Hill by Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt Verse-Chorus Tonight I m alone without you, my dear, It seems there s a longing for you still, All I have to do now is sit alone and cry In our little cabin home on the hill. Oh someone has taken you from me, And left me here all alone, Just listen to the rain beat on my window pane In our little cabin home on the hill. I hope you are happy tonight as you are, But in my heart there s a longing for you still, I just keep it there, so I won t be alone In our little cabin home on the hill. Now when you have come to the end of the way, And find there s no more happiness for you, Just let your thoughts turn back once more, if you will, To our little cabin home on the hill.
Love of the Mountains (Key of A) by Allen Mills Verse-Chorus Verse and Chorus (same chords for both): A D E D (repeat) Now a bright moon is shining in the valley, An old wagon leans against a stack of hay, Two graves on a hillside by the cabin My mom and dad are resting there today. Verses: Two trees on a hillside of the mountain Always looking up towards the sky, Remind me of my papa and my mama Who lived there eighty years before they died. The burning of the green wood on the fireplace, The fallen snow around the red bud trees, The branches of the laurel by the creek bed, And the rippling waters of the gentle stream. Papa used to talk about the young days When he and mama first were settled there. He spoke about the love of the mountains That he and mama shared together there.
Love of the Mountains (Key of A, capo 2) by Allen Mills Verse-Chorus Verse and Chorus (same chords for both): G C D C (repeat) Now a bright moon is shining in the valley, An old wagon leans against a stack of hay, Two graves on a hillside by the cabin My mom and dad are resting there today.
Shady Grove (Key of A minor) Traditional Verse-Chorus Like many traditional songs, you ll find versions of this one with some slightly different chords, but this three-chord version is fairly common. Verse and Chorus (same chords for both): Am G Am C G G Am Shady Grove, my little love, Shady Grove I say. Shady Grove, my little love, I m bound to go away. Verses: Peaches in the summer time, Apples in the fall, If I can t get the girl I love, I don t want none at all. When I was a little boy, I wanted a Barlow knife, Now I want little Shady Grove To say she ll be my wife. Wish I had a banjo string Made of golden twine, Every tune I d play on it, I d wish that girl was mine.
Clinch Mountain Backstep (Key of A) Ralph Stanley AABB The unusual thing about this great banjo instrumental is the backstep in the B part: an extra half-measure (one extra Boom-chick ) played each time through the B part. Once you become familiar with this tune, it s easier to hear/feel that extra beat than it is to count it out! A part: A E E A B part: A E E A
