Our admissions coordinator is also on hand to guide you through the application process. Thinking about applying? Read the directions in this guide carefully before applying. Saturday, November 18 Optional early audition. Application file must be complete. Friday, November 24 In order to meet the application deadline, we suggest that you begin the application process no later than today (see instructions). Friday, December 1 All application materials due. Wednesday, December 20 Applicants approved by faculty are invited to audition. Saturday, January 20 First graduate audition day. Saturday, February 10 Second graduate audition day. Sunday, April 15 Deadline to respond to first round of funding offers. Tuesday, May 1 Deadline to respond to admission offers. May be extended with faculty s permission.

FUNDING FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS Funding in the School of Music graduate program is highly competitive and is awarded to the top applicants in each area of study (see below). lease note: You do not need to apply for funding! Fellowships and Teaching Assistantships (TA) are awarded based on the quality of your application and/or audition. These positions include tuition remission, health insurance options, and a stipend. 3 GRADUATE ALICATION CHECKLIST ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Minimum requirements for admission to the graduate program: Completion of a Bachelor s degree in Music at a recognized institution with a minimum GA of 3.0. Sufficient coursework in Music History and Music Theory, generally four semesters of each. þ All international students must submit a TOEFL score of 85 or higher. Waivers are NOT granted by the School of Music. International students must also show possession of sufficient funds (~$47,000) to cover tuition and living expenses for one year. BASIC MATERIALS q Statement of purpose Clearly state your instrument and/or the degree you are seeking. Describe your educational and professional journey. Be sure to include any relevant teaching experience and other skills that qualify you to serve as a Teaching Assistant in the School of Music. q Three letters of recommendation Your recommenders will receive a link to complete their letters online, so be sure that you have entered the correct address and contact information for each recommender. q Resume lease limit your resume to 1-2 pages. We will not read more than 2 pages. q Unofficial transcripts Upload an unofficial transcript or grade report from each school where you have received a degree or taken music courses. This can be a scan or screenshot of your grade report, or a full transcript. If you are recommended for admission by the School of Music, the Graduate School will ask you to provide an official transcript in order to finalize your admission. SULEMENTARY MATERIALS q Writing samples (1-2) Required for the Master of Arts (M.A.) and all Doctoral degrees (D.M.A., h.d.) Submit 1-2 academic writing samples in your field of study. M.A. & h.d. candidates should submit substantial research paper(s). Note: Applicants for the Master of Music (M.M.) degree do not need to submit a writing sample. q GRE test scores Required for Musicology and Music Theory only There is no minimum required GRE score. lease send your scores electronically to UW-Madison. Our school code is q Audio/video recordings (20-25 min) Required for all performers (Brass, Conducting, ercussion, iano, Strings, Voice, Woodwinds) IMORTANT: See recording requirements for each area. These will be used for audition prescreening and funding consideration. You will be asked to provide URL link(s) to all recordings. Recordings may be placed on YouTube or any other file sharing site. q Scores with audio recordings (3-5) Required for Composition only Scores must be in DF format. Accompanying audio recordings must be in.mp3 format. 4 GRADUATE ALICATION ROCESS Graduate School Application You are applying to the Graduate School AND the School of Music. You will complete TWO separate online applications, with an interval of approximately 2-3 days. Send your GRE and/or TOEFL scores electronically to UW-Madison (if applicable). Start the Graduate School application here: 8 When selecting your degree, please note that the School of Music does not admit Doctoral track students. If you will not have earned a Master s degree before Fall 2018, please do not apply for the Doctoral program. o Enter your personal information and select your degree program o Upload your Statement of urpose, resume, and unofficial transcripts o Enter the contact information for your 3 recommenders o Determine your residency status for tuition purposes Warning! Composition is an M.M. / D.M.A. erformance degree. The application process is entirely electronic! For the transcript upload section, please provide us with an unofficial scan or copy of your transcript or grade report from each institution where you have taken music courses and/or earned a degree. If your transcripts are in another language, please include an English translation. Once you have submitted your Graduate School application and paid the application fee, you will receive a confirmation containing a IN and password to check the status of your application and send reminders to your recommenders. Do not confuse these login codes with the School of Music login information (see below). School of Music Application Within 2-3 days of submitting your Graduate School application, you will receive an automated called School of Music Graduate Applicant containing a password and link to the music application. Do not expect this any sooner than 2-3 days after submitting your Graduate School application! The automated will contain your 9-digit Campus ID, which will function as your student ID number at UW-Madison. Once you ve logged into your School of Music application, you ll be asked to do the following: o Select your specific instrument/specialty and preferred teacher (if applicable). o Upload the supplementary materials required by your program (e.g. URL links, writing samples, scores, etc.) o Select your preferred audition date (if applicable); you will be scheduled on this date if you are invited to audition. o Upload your Statement of urpose and resume again. Submit your School of Music application by Friday, December 1. You are now done with the application process. Careful! You can save and return, but once you ve hit submit you won t be able edit your application again. After you apply... You can check the status of your letters of recommendation by logging into your MyUW account (see your from the Graduate School). To send reminders to your recommenders, log back into your Graduate School application. lease do NOT contact the School of Music to inquire about your letters of recommendation. 5 RECORDING REQUIREMENTS Instrumentalists, Singers, and Conductors Recordings must be submitted as URLs linking to YouTube or another file sharing site. You will be able to upload a maximum of 5 separate links. lease include about minutes of music. lease note that video recordings are required for Brass, Conducting, ercussion, and Strings. Note: You will be invited to audition based upon the quality of your recordings. Brass and Conducting applicants should contact the appropriate faculty member via immediately after applying to schedule an independent audition. If invited, all others will have their audition scheduled on the date selected in the School of Music application. BRASS Must be video. resent a range of styles and periods. CONDUCTING Must be video. Include rehearsal and performance excerpts. Camera should be aimed at conductor's face and hands. ORGAN Audio or video. resent a range of styles and periods. ERCUSSION Must be video. lease see the online document for detailed instructions: IANO Audio or video. Sample solo works from at least 3 historical periods. Can be movements rather than complete works. Applicants for the Collaborative iano program should include at least one collaborative work in their recordings. STRINGS & GUITAR Must be video. resent a range of styles and periods. VOCAL ERFORMANCE Audio or video. Recordings must include two art songs and at least one aria from opera and/or oratorio. WOODWINDS Audio or video. resent a variety of styles and include three standard orchestral excerpts (all except Saxophone). Applicants for the Multiple Woodwinds program should include a second instrument in their recordings. Composition Submit 3-5.mp3 recordings to match the DF scores you have submitted. At least one recording must be live. lease clearly label your.mp3 and DF files with the names of your pieces. Note: There is no formal audition or interview process for Composition applicants. However, you are always welcome to come visit the School of Music and meet privately with the Composition/Theory faculty.

If invited to audition, consult conducting faculty. erformance, edagogy repare approximately one hour of works representing at least three of the major historical periods, from which the committee will select excerpts. Collaborative 30 minutes Consult rofessor Fischer to discuss audition repertoire and arrange for performing partners: ost-audition interview including sight-reading. 15 minutes repare: minutes 1. One extended work of J.S. Bach (a free work or a large chorale prelude). 2. One work from One additional work contrasting in style with the other two selections.
