1 POWER SUPPLY AND FIBRE OPTIC COUPLING MODULE DIC 221 DIAS power supply and DIC 221 fibre optic cable coupling module for the power supply of DIAS function modules, 2 x fibre optic cable connections (DIAS bus) for versatile link The DIC 221 DIAS coupling module is used for supplying power to the connected DIAS function modules. It possesses a fibre optic cable input and a fibre optic cable output for communication with decentralised module groups. At the input the DIC 211 communicates with a DPS 211, DPS 221, DOC 211, DOC 221 or with a DIC 221; a DIC 211 or DIC 221 can be connected to the output for control of the DIAS function modules. 3 POWER SUPPLY AND FIBRE OPTIC COUPLING MODULE DIC 221 Connections On the front of the fibre optic coupling module the following connections are found: Fiber optic channel 2: output Fiber optic channel 1: input Power supply The connection to the current supply is made via a 2-pole plug wired as follows: Pin Function V supply 2 GND Status displays The status LEDs of the fibre optic cable coupling module indicate the operating status of the module. Tx yellow Tx Illuminates when data to the DIAS bus are being sent. DIAS Rx green Rx Illuminates when data to the DIAS bus are being received. 4 DIC 221 POWER SUPPLY AND FIBRE OPTIC COUPLING MODULE Making up a fibre optic cable (1mm POF) To make a fibre optic cable connection you need a Duplex fibre optic cable with a 1mm diameter optical fibre and two fibre optic cable plugs. 1. A 12 cm length of the insulating sheath must be removed. Caution: Do not damage the covering of the fibre optic cable. 2. Separate the fibre optic cable up to about 7 cm from the end, and trim about 1 cm of insulation off each lead. Make sure that you do not damage the fibre optic cable! For stripping the Duplex fibre optic cable special stripping pliers are available. 5 POWER SUPPLY AND FIBRE OPTIC COUPLING MODULE DIC 221 A coupling can be used for extending a fibre optic cable. This is, however, only recommended with HCS! Using a coupling the maximum length with POF is decreased by 20m and with HCS by 100m! When using the original crimping rings, set the crimping pliers to maximum grip (+)! With the aluminium crimping rings the crimping pliers can be left on a weaker position, the durability of the pliers is increased essentially through that Page 5

6 DIC 221 POWER SUPPLY AND FIBRE OPTIC COUPLING MODULE 3. Insert both the stripped leads together into the plug as far as they will go. The leads should now stick out of the front of the plug by a few millimetres. Press down on the plug so that the leads are firmly connected with it. The crimping ring should be closed off with the plastic part: Richtig Wrong Falsch 4. Shorten the leads sticking out of the front of the plug with a small pair of electrician's side cutting pliers so that only about 1 mm remains. With 15µ abrasive paper (manufacturer 3M - colour grey) rub the leads of the fibre optic cable with a figureof-eight motion until they are flush with the casing of the plug. Finally, repeat this procedure with 1µ abrasive paper (manufacturer 3M - colour yellow) (8-10 figures-of-eight). 4 cm Do not kink. Under no circumstances should a bend have a radius less than the bending radius of 4 cm defined by the manufacturer. Also not while the making the cable up! Page

7 POWER SUPPLY AND FIBRE OPTIC COUPLING MODULE DIC 221 When assembling the second plug, make sure the leads of the fibre optic cable are fitted as shown in the previous sketch. Carry out the following test in order to ascertain whether the fibre optic cable has been correctly fitted into the plug. 1. Place the two plugs with the writing on top (see diagram). 2. Cover the marked fibre with the index finger. 3. If light no longer shines through the corresponding fibre in the second plug, the fibre optic cable has been connected in the plug correctly. Cover this fibre This fibre remains dark A fibre optic cable has many advantages, however it must be treated with the level of care required by the manufacturer. To avoid unnecessary strain on the cable you should never pull on the leads when pulling out the fibre optic cable plug! Page 7
