Our Promise: Inform: We will provide information that is timely, accurate, balanced, objective, easily understood and accessible to all. Listen: We will be on hand to hear your concerns and answer your questions. Learn: We will listen and learn more about your views and any concerns.
Metrotown Station and Exchange Upgrades Background Metrotown Station opened in 1986 along with the rest of the Expo Line Metrotown bus exchange opened a few years later (1989) Metrotown is now the second busiest SkyTrain station, serving over 50,000 trips per day The bus exchange serves over 25,000 trips per day Metrotown Station and exchange currently face significant capacity issues The station and exchange have been identified as a priorities for investment in past studies Issues Capacity and Congestion: The station and exchange currently do not have enough capacity for current passenger volumes. Significant passenger growth is expected on the line and at the station. Accessibility: The station does not meet today s accessibility standards. Integration: The station and exchange is a key transit hub and needs upgrades to improve passenger flow, transfer experience and better relate to the neighbourhood. Safety, Security & Comfort: Many opportunities to improve the customer experience in and around the transit facility.
Necessary Upgrades Capacity The station is the second busiest SkyTrain station, serving 50,000 trips each day. The bus exchange, which is a transfer point for 12 bus routes, serves 25,000 trips per day There is currently crowding on the east end of the platform and on the stairs and elevator Accessibility The station does not meet accessibility standards The accessible route from the station to the bus exchange and Metropolis mall is circuitous The station has insufficient elevator capacity and lacks down escalators Additional stairway width is required to meet safety codes Capacity issues will increase in the future, as significant system and area growth is expected over the next 20 years
Necessary Upgrades Safety & Security Mesh panels limit visibility between the station and the neighbourhood Poor and inconsistent lighting contributes to a perception of insecurity Passenger Comfort & Amenities Poor surfacing and landscaping contribute to an unattractive environment Inadequate weather protection at platform level does not provide a comfortable waiting experience Inadequate wayfinding discourages transit use
Expo Line Upgrade Strategy TransLink has begun necessary station upgrades on the Expo Line identified in the Expo Line Upgrade Strategy. Upgrades are prioritized for stations with the most significant deficiencies. downtown vancouver Main Street Science World Construction Phase coquitlam Commercial Broadway Design Phase richmond Metrotown Design Phase burnaby Joyce Collingwood Planning Phase new westminster New Westminster Design Phase surrey Scott Road Construction Phase Surrey Central Planning Phase
Summary of Upgrades Expansion of lighting, wayfinding, and other customer amenities Extension of the platform roof to the west Addition of a central entry at the elevators Rebuilt east entrance and addition of new west station house SkyTrain Station Upgrades Improved access to and from the platform New stairs/escalators from ground level to the platform at both the east and west entries Replacement of the existing original elevator with two new elevators near the middle of the platform, accessible via the new central entry A new stair mid-platform, connecting to grade level at the central entry Installation of faregates and associated equipment
Summary of Upgrades Additional Amenities Upgrade to the existing BC Parkway bicycle and pedestrian path, between the new exchange and Beresford Street A bike parking facility A work of public art to be commissioned in collaboration with the City of Burnaby Space for retail units identified. Inclusion is subject to further investigation of viability Bus Exchange Upgrades An expanded bus exchange under the west end of the station A bus layover area to the east of the station Direct pedestrian connections between the exchange and the station Direct pedestrian connections between the exchange and surrounding neighbourhood
