OASIS CSI (Certified Security Integrators) Direct Attach Warranty for ESS Devices Berk-Tek recommends installing a well-designed structured cabling channel per the TIA standards. This includes up to 100 meters of twisted pair horizontal cabling terminated on both ends with a modular jack and corresponding Category cables. In the TR, the cable is connected to the patch panel and on the device end, the camera is attached to the solids horizontal cable through an RJ-45 terminated patch cord to the workstation outlet. In some real world IP applications that extend outside the voice and data scope, such as security cameras and access point devices, there are circumstances that do not allow a jack-to-outlet scenario on the device end. The TIA-862 standard for BAS applications recognizes these circumstances and allows the elimination of a workstation outlet and patch cord at the device end, when deemed unsafe and unfeasible. This includes, but not limited to, applications such as cameras, access controls, industrial sensors, lighting and wireless access points. Berk-Tek s OASIS 15-year warranty through the CSI program will cover a single ended direct attach when using any RJ-45 plugs that meet the most recent TIA standards, installed to best practices through the OASIS CSI training and provide proper test results. (Plug installation instructions are available from Berk-Tek.. See testing procedures further in this document). However, the plugs on the chart have been tested and approved by the Nexans DCCC and are recommended with Berk-Tek cable: Manufacturer Category 5e Category 6 Berk-Tek UTP Plenum & Riser* 1 HyperPlus-5e LANmark-350 LANmark-6 LANmark-1000 LANmark-2000 Termination Tool Bel Stewart SS SS Sentinel L L AllenTel - AT8X8RCSC-24 AT 568, AT 680 Metz Connect i i Tooless** * See Bek-Tek catalog or Website for cable part numbers: ** Does not require a connector crimper or additional termination tools To order plugs, contact your local distributor.
Guidelines for best installation practices This guide is intended to provide basic guidelines for the installation of Berk- Tek copper cabling products. The use of this guide is not a substitute for installation training through the OASIS CSI program. Installation practices outlined in ANSI/TIA -568-C and the BICSI TDMM Manual must be followed. Maximum Cable Lengths Per the channel and permanent link requirements of ANSI/TIA -568-C 90 meters horizontal cabling 10 meters total patch cables Cable Slack It is recommended to provide additional cable slack at both ends to accommodate future cabling system changes Telecommunications closet: 10 feet Telecommunications outlet: 12 inches for twisted pair cables Maximum Cable Pull Force UTP Cables: 25 lbs-f Handling of Cable Boxes Boxes must be stored and handled in an upright position to reduce the chance of twisting and kinking the cable especially if the box is partially used Cable Bend Radius UTP: 4 times the cable diameter or 1 inch Cable Management and Pulling Practices Eliminate cable stress Control tension in suspended cable runs by limiting spans between supports to 5 ft or less Avoid tightly cinched cable bundles Avoid kinking during installation Avoid changing the geometry of the cable 2
Follow manufacturers recommendations for loading of cable trays and j-hooks. The use of tie wraps should be avoided. Staples are prohibited When pulling cable apply pulling force evenly to all conductors in the cable. Avoiding kinking the cable when dressing the cable. Avoid exceeding the maximum bend radius for the cable. Connector Termination Follow the manufacturer s guidelines for termination of connectors and patch panels Plug Installation Guidelines If the direct attach method needs to be used, there are some guidelines for attaching plugs. Following these procedures will help to assure that the plug contacts line up and work properly. But, since there are no standards to attaching plugs other than lining up the conductors to match TIA-568-A or B, each plug design varies between manufacturers. Use these as guidelines, but refer to the manufacturers specific instructions and use their recommended tools: If there is a strain relief (boot), slide it on the cable Trim off 1 to 1 ½ of the jacket and untwist the pairs Align the conductors to match the proper color layout for either TIA- 568A or 568B, depending on the other end of the termination in the TR If there is a load bar or management bar, trim the conductors at a slight angle. If no load bar, evenly cut straight across (to make it easier to load in) Line up the conductors on the load bar and trim the excess wire once pushed through. There should be no more than a total of ½ of untwisted wire from the tip of the housing to the cable jacket Make sure that all conductors touch the end of the housing and are visible when looking thru the end of the housing If there is a strain relief, slide up to the rear of the plug housing Using the manufacturers recommended crimp tool, crimp the plug into place. This is a critical step because if done incorrectly the wires can become loose and lose end to end contact. 3
Testing Procedures for a Direct Attach A Single Connector Modified Permanent Link is the name that is given to the test procedure for a Category 5E or Category 6 direct attach plug-ended configuration where the 90-meter length of horizontal cable is punched down at the near end patch panel and an RJ-45 plug is attached at the device far end. The test equipment utilizes a test equipment cord on the near end attached to a Permanent Link Adapter and is directly attached to a channel adapter at the far end. A Consolidation Point (CP) may be also be located between the near and far ends. The upcoming BICSI-005 Guide for the Design and Implementation of Electronic Safety and Security (ESS) Structured Cabling will be ratified in 2012 and recognizes the direct attach as a viable connectivity for ESS devices. The following recommended test procedures according to Underwriters Laboratories (UL File E349672, Project 11CA44391) should be followed: Configuration 1 Direct Attach A 90-meter length of horizontal cable terminated (punched down) to a randomly selected port of the near end patch panel and an RJ-45 plug on the work area/device far end. The hand-held tester shall be fitted with the permanent link adapter on the near end and a channel adapter on the work area plug far end. 4
Configuration 2 Direct Attach with a Consolidation Point A 90-meter length of horizontal cable terminated (punched down) to a randomly selected port with consolidation point connector (RJ-45) 85 meters from the near end and a RJ-45 plug on the work area/device far end. The hand-held tester shall be fitted with the permanent link adapter on the near end and a channel adapter on the work area plug far end. (Note: UL Testing exhibited results that complied for both passive and active testing. Passive testing included set-ups Configurations 1 and Configuration 2 as stated above and pictured using a Fluke DTX-1800 hand-held tester. Active testing included Configurations 1 and 2 utilizing the Spirent Smartbits SMB 2000 Active Bit Error Rate Tester set-up for 1GBASE- T through-put measurements of the following frame sizes: 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 1280, and For specific test results, contact UL, Reference File E349672, Project 11CA44391.) 5
Obtaining a CSI OASIS Warranty on a Direct Attach Project Security Integrator must have completed CSI training Integrator logs in to and completes the project registration for an OASIS warranty. Integrator will provide BOM/POS from distributor along with the proper test data. This information will be uploaded with the project. Upon completion of the project registration the project is reviewed and processed within 30 days. OASIS Warranty Certificate is issued via to the OASIS Integrator.
