7 -6- CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION 1.1 GENERAL The FLM-2 is a full duplex time division synchronous/asynchronous multiplexer enabling up to 12 terminals to be multiplexed onto a single channel. A maximum number of 3 channels can be chosen to operate either synchronously or asynchronously, while the remaining 9 channels operate asynchronously. 1.2 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION The multiplexer has 6 sub-channels expandable to 12 via channel doubler cables. Various configurations are possible to suit the specific needs of the user: (a) Up to six async data channels with one control signal per channel at data rates up to 19,200 bps; (b) Up to six async data channels without control signals at rates up to 38,400 bps; (c) Up to six data channels, three of which operate synchronously at rates up to 19,200 bps and remaining channels operate asynchronously at rates up to 38,400 bps; (d) Up to 12 data channels at rates up to 19,200 bps, three of which operate synchronously, and remaining channels operate asynchronously. These configurations are field selectable by the user with rate switches and straps located on the main board. Three media options for the main channel interface are offered: (a) Electrical version - 4-wire for transmission over two twisted pairs; (b) Optical version - dual fiber; (c) Optical version single fiber Selection of options is made upon ordering. Asynchronous multiplexing is implemented using an over-sampling technique. Each one of the 12 channels is sampled at 76.8 kbps rate in the electrical option while in the optical option the rate of sampling is doubled. Table l-l summarizes the performance at various options and modes of operation. Note: Whenever possible (i.e. number of channels is up to 6), it is advisable to operate the FLM in the 6-channel mode, which results in less distortion.

11 APPLICATIONS The FLM-2 primary application is for point-to-point configurations where distances of up to several kilometers are involved. A typical application is demonstrated in Figure l-l where a cluster of terminals are connected to a host computer through a single link. For installations involving clusters of terminals distributed in several locations, the FLM-2 units may be installed in a ring-type configuration as shown in Figure 1-2. At each site, the unconnected channels must be bypassed by shorting pin 2 to pin 3 of the relevant sub-channels connector. While operating synchronously, if a bypass is needed for channels 1, 2 or 3. the TC source in the bypassed unit should be placed in RX mode. (Refer to Par ). Not more than two adjacent units should operate in the RX mode. This configuration does not apply to the single-fiber version.

13 CHAPTER 2 - INSTALLATION 2.1 SITE PREPARATION The FLM-2 is installed within 1.5 m (5 feet) of a grounded AC outlet. Any adjustment, maintenance or repair of the opened instrument under voltage should be avoided. If necessary, these repairs should be carried out only by a skilled technician who is aware of the hazards involved. 2.2 SET-UP Any access inside the equipment is only permitted to authorized and qualified service personnel. Four set-up procedures prior to operation are needed: the number of channels available, synchronous channels data rates, TC source and the grounding: Number of Sub-Channels Refer to figure 2-1; unscrew the two upper cover screws located at the back of the unit, slide the upper cover backward and locate the strap marked - select 6 or 12 channels with an arrow. For up to 6 channels with no controls applications, place the strap between center pin, and the one marked 6 for any other applications place it between the center pin and the one marked Synchronous Data Rates Refer to figure 2-1; locate the three data-rate rotary switches marked "CH.1, CH.2, CH.3 as well as the rate table which is located on the left. If the synchronous option is not needed, set the three switches to positions 5, 6 or 7 (Asynchronous mode) according to the rate table. If any of the channels 1 to 3 are to operate synchronously. their corresponding switch must be rotated to the appropriate data-rate position according to the rate table TC Source Refer to figure 2-1; locate the strap marked TC SOURCE. - For normal synchronous operation, i.e. Transmit Clock is generated internally, place the strap below the IN marking. - If loopback timing is needed, i.e. TC is synchronized to the Received Clock, place the strap below RX marking. - If the External Clock is provided by the D.T.E. via RS-232 Pin 24, place the strap below the EX marking. Only channel 1 can accept the External Clock.
14 Grounding Refer to Figure 2-1; locate the strap marked "GND" According to your requirements, select the signal ground to be connected to shielding (chassis) ground or to be disconnected from it. Slide upper cover back to its place, and fasten the screws. Figure 2-1: Strapping Diagram I. The safety status of the UW ports is TNV operating in the limits of SELV. 20 OPERATING PROCEDURE WARNING BEFORE SWITCHING ON THIS INSTRUMENT, the protective ground (earth) terminals of this instrument must be connected to the profebtive ground conductor of the (mains) power cord. The mains plug shall only be inserted in a socket outlet provided with a protective ground (earth) contact. The protective action must not be negated by use of an extension cord (power cable) without a protective ground conductor Make sure that only fuses with the required rated current and of the specified type (normal blow; time delay; etc) are used for replacement. The use of repaired fuses and the short-circuiting of fuse holders is forbidden. An extra fuse is normally supplied with the instrument. Whenever it is likely that the protection offered, by fuses has been impaired, the instrument must be made inoperative and be secured against any unintended operation. Power Turn-On Apply AC power by connecting the AC power cord to an acceptable AC source. Lighting up of the Power LED indicates that the FLM-2 is powered. If the local and remote FLM-2 units are in operation and properly connected via the main channel, no other LED should be ON. If another condition exists, please refer to para Operation The FLM-2 operates entirely unattended except when performing system tests. Power Turn-Off To turn off FLM-2, simply remove the AC power cord from the AC source. Operational field strapping changes Any access inside the equipment is only permitted to authorized and qualified service personnel.
