Amended or additional parts of revised pages will be marked by a vertical black line in the adjacent margin. Issue Date Comments 1 March 1995 Original Document. Responsibilities and distribution Implementation Disclaimer Supply Controlled copies of this standard shall be complied with by all personnel who are responsible for design, installation, maintenance or faulting of a signalling system. The provisions of this are mandatory and shall be complied with forthwith. The Safety & Standards Directorate (S&SD) of Railtrack shall use its best endeavours to ensure that the content, layout and text of this standard are accurate, complete and in line with current best practice insofar as is reasonably practicable. It makes no warranties, express or implied, that compliance with all or any of its standards shall be sufficient to ensure safe systems of work or operation. Railtrack will not be liable to pay compensation to those to whom standards are directed or indemnify them against or make contribution towards any claim made against them by third parties arising out of or in respect to the content or subsequent use of or reliance upon its standards, except where it can be shown to have acted in bad faith or there has been wilful default on its part. 5 Page 3 of 7 Part B 1 Purpose 2 Scope 3 Definitions 4 Introduction 5 Procedure This standard authorises the use of cables to GS/ES 0872 as alternatives to BR 872 and older imperial sized cables which are shown on the design record. This is in order to eliminate the need to specially order obsolete types of cable where there is an equivalent in the GS/ES 0872 range. This standard applies to all cases where the existing design specifies an obsolete cable size/type for which there is an equivalent in the GS/ES 0872 range. Design Authority The Infrastructure Controller or such other organisation as is contracted by the Infrastructure Controller to undertake design work for that system. Infrastructure Controller A Railway Business which is responsible for the railway lines, including the track, structures, plant and control equipment. An Infrastructure Controller may either own or lease the infrastructure concerned. When renewal of cables is necessary previous cable sizes shall be replaced with the nearest equivalent cable from the GS/ES 0872 range using Table 2 or Table 3 as appropriate. Where the type shown in the table does not directly respond to the previous type the conversion is shown in Table 1. All new and altered design work shall show the use of cables in accordance with GS/ES Where it is necessary to replace cables during installation, maintenance or faulting and no stock of the cable shown on the design record is available, this may be done on the authority of this Standard by using the equivalents listed in the tables below. It shall not be necessary to consult the Design Authority for prior alteration to the wiring diagrams where the circumstances exactly match those covered in this standard. In some cases, indicated in the tables below, although guidance is given, the appropriate Design Authority should be consulted. Where the type and size of the cable to be replaced is not listed below, then the appropriate Design Authority shall be consulted. In all cases of on track equipment and other situations subject to similar levels of vibration, Type C (or E) cable shall be used. Where their particular fire performance characteristics have been specified (eg ZHLS - Zero Halogen Low Smoke), cable types D and E shall be used in lieu of Types B and C respectively. The replacement cable shall have a number of cores equal to or greater than that specified on site diagrams. Any spare cores shall either be terminated in accordance with the site wiring diagrams, or insulated in accordance with the Signalling Installation Handbook (SIH 1D 20). Five core cable to type MD3 (or D3) was originally specified for R A I L T R A C K 3
6 Page 4 of 7 Withdrawn Document emergency replacement use only and this therefore does not come within the scope of this instruction. 4 R A I L T R A C K
7 Page 5 of 7 Where necessary for particular identification purposes, the replacement cable shall be of an appropriate colour. Alternatively, coloured sleeves of a suitable material, may be used to mark the cable in appropriate places. Cable to GS/ES 0872 is 650/1100 V rated and is therefore suitable for use in all existing railway signalling cable applications. Prior to the August 1986 issue of BR 872, when cable types A, B and C were introduced, cable types were referred to differently. On some diagrams, cables may still be identified in the previous way, and the current equivalents of these are shown in Table 1. Table 1 Cable Type Conversion Pre-1986 Cable Types *1 MC1 MC2 MD1 Cable Types in GS/ES 0872 A1 A2 B1 Notes MD2 B2, A3 *2 MF1 C1 *3 MF2 C2 *3 *1 The M in Pre Cable Types denotes metric size and therefore pre 1970 descriptions may exclude this (eg. C2, F1 etc.). *2 A3 cable provides a suitable alternative for internal or otherwise mechanically protected cable installation. *3 Type C cable is suitable for tail cable use, having a very heavy duty construction, and can therefore replace wire armoured type F cable that was used for these applications. Type C cable however is not suitable for long term direct burial and may therefore not be a suitable replacement for all armoured cable applications (eg, type G brass taped cables). Table 2 (which follows) shows the equivalent cable sizes for converting former BR 872 cables to GS/ES 0872 cable. For example, 2 core 50/0.25mm type C2 BR 872 cable shall be replaced with a 2 core 2.5mm 2 (f) type C2 GS/ES 0872 cable. Note: In some instances equivalent replacement cables to GS/ES 0872 may require terminations and cable jointing kits etc. which are different to the old cable. R A I L T R A C K 5

In the case of older Level Crossing Flashing Road Signals, which have cable entries of insufficient size to accommodate this cable, 1.5mm 2 Type B2 cable shall be used within the post. The 1.5mm 2 cable shall be through jointed to the 2.5mm 2 (f) cable at a convenient point as near as practicable to the base of the post such that the length of 1.5mm 2 cable is minimised (where circumstances permit, a disconnection box may be provided in lieu of the through joint). See also #2 (below). For all other applications, except where prior agreement of the Design Authority has been received, 2.5mm 2 cable shall be used. In most cases, since the 1/1.53mm cable has a conductor area of 1.85mm 2, it may with the agreement of the Design Authority be replaced by 1.5mm 2 cable to GS/ES #2 2.5mm 2 (f) is the standard notation to be used for flexible 2.5mm 2 cable 6 R A I L T R A C K

The Design Authority shall be advised of the change (within a timescale as determined by the Infrastructure Controller). The master records shall be brought into line within a timescale as determined by the Infrastructure Controller, but not later than the next occasion that a design alteration takes place or a correlation exercise is undertaken. 8 R A I L T R A C K
