2 NEW ZEALAND COMMERCIAL The licence fees paid by each commercial radio station are distributed directly to the works played on that station. PUBLIC The licence fees from national and concert radio are distributed directly to the works played on those stations on a census basis. USED AS BACKGROUND MUSIC Businesses that use music, such as playing the radio in a café, pay us a licence fee to do so. We use the data radio stations provide us to allocate this revenue. MUSIC IN ADVERTISEMENTS From November 2016 a new system is in place monitoring airplay of advertisements broadcast on metropolitan stations, and using Music Recognition Technology (MRT) to identify the music, for APRA's distribution payments. This provides the same level of accuracy as for all other music broadcast on radio and television, and moves the Note: Jingles played in non-metropolitan areas are still submitted by our self-reporting system. MAORI AND STUDENT Each station provides details of the music they play on a sample basis, reflecting the low licence fees involved.
3 AUSTRALIAN COMMERCIAL The licence fees paid by each commercial radio station are distributed directly to the works played on that station. COMMUNITY Each station provides us with details of the music they play on a small sample basis (reflecting the relatively low licence fees involved). The number of logs actually used from each station for distribution analysis (which ranges from 1 week to 4 weeks a year) depends on the size of each station s APRA licence fee. Royalties are split into four genre streams: Fine Music / General / Alternative / University & Independent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian (Main) Christian (RHEMA) ABC AND SBS This includes music on digital channels such as Triple J Unearthed and Pop Asia. 4 NEW ZEALAND TELEVISION TV1 & TV2 The TVNZ licence fees are distributed directly to the works played on TV1 and TV2 on a census basis. PRIME Licence fees are distributed directly to the music and AV productions broadcast by this station on a sample basis. MAORI TV Licence fees are distributed directly to works and AV productions, those that don t auto-match are researched on a 1 week in 4 basis. TV3 TV3 licence fees are paid directly to the music used in the programmes screened by this station/network on a sample basis. NZ TV BRAVO BRAVO licence fees are paid directly to the music used in the programmes screened by this station/network on a sample basis. 5 AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION COMMERCIAL TV Census electronic logs are provided by each Network 7, 9 and 10 capital city station, including related digital channels such as 7Mate, Go! and One. Regional affiliates and some unaffiliated stations provide logs on a sample basis. TELEVISION USED AS BACKGROUND MUSIC Shops, hotels and other businesses often have televisions installed to entertain their customers. They pay us a licence fee for the music played on their televisions and we use the data free-to-air TV stations provide us to allocate this revenue. ABC AND SBS TV Revenue is allocated separately to each network, based on their relative audience size and music content. 6 DIGITAL DELIVERY AND RINGTONE SERVICES Services like itunes provide us with a sales report detailing each track s retail price and sales. Royalties from each track are distributed directly to the track. SUBSCRIPTION AND AD-FUNDED MUSIC SERVICES APRA analyses sales reports from Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, Les Mills & Tidal. Your royalties from these sources are directly linked to the number of times your song has been streamed in a reporting period, relative to the total number of streams in that reporting period. Royalties from smaller services are allocated to the major services. ONLINE ONLINE VIDEO SITES YouTube: Youtube: Royalties are now distributed to ALL identified musical works on YouTube as well as to the Top 1000 general entertainment videos (where the music hasn t been specifically reported, but can be identified by APRA AMCOS staff) Vevo: Royalties are distributed according to playlist data, on a similar basis to ad-funded music services. VIDEO ON DEMAND (VOD) APRA analyses sales/performance reports from Apple, Netflix, Neon and Lightbox. VOD sales are distributed on a similar basis to downloads and subscription services. OTHER SERVICES Playlist and streaming data is used to distribute royalties for music used on other websites like Double J, MCM and Vidzone.
7 OTHER If your royalty statement has an amount attributed to Other, this payment has come from sources such as: Live Performance Returns Promoted concerts, festivals and dance parties, nightclubs, churches, music-on-hold, airlines, schools, fitness classes and ambient music. Royalties from background music suppliers and retail chains such as Moodmedia, Coles and Big W Successful unlogged performance claims CINEMA The distribution is weighted according to each film s box office takings and music duration. NZ PAY TV Programme and/or music and interstitial details for over 20 channels are either provided to us on a census basis or are copied over from related Australian pay TV channels to share in the licence fees paid by NZ Sky TV.
