Chapter I General Information Introduction Obtaining accurate ph values depends on both correct measurement of standard and sample temperatures, and on compensation for any variations in these temperatures. This thermal compensation has generally been accomplished either manually, (by measuring sample solution with a thermometer and then dialing in the measured temperature on the meter), or automatically, (by placing a separate temperature probe together with a ph electrode in the solution). Both actions will modify amplifier gain or change the potential at the input of an A/ D converter, to scale the measurement into temperaturecompensated values. The Model 611 ph Meter requires no temperature dial or separate temperature probe. The meter measures temperature change through resistance changes that occur in the ph electrode, and uses this information to automatically compensate for ph/temperature readings. The Model 611 s temperature measurement ability is based on the relationship of ph electrode resistance to temperature. The log of resistance of the electrode varies almost proportionately with temperature. All ph electrodes have a negative temperature coefficient of about 8% per degree, that is, electrode resistance doubles for every 10 C drop in temperature. Although ph electrode resistance at any given temperature varies from electrode to electrode, all ph electrodes exhibit approximately the same percentage change in resistance with temperature. 10 Chapter IV Measurement Procedures ph Measurement A. Set-Up 1. Leave the Model 611 in STD BY to eliminate warm up and increase component life. Allow one-half hour warm up if meter has been disconnected. 2. Securely connect ph and reference electrodes, or combination ph electrode into INPUT (ph) and REF (ph) on the rear panel. 3. Verify that reference filling solution level in the electrode is adequate. The level of filling solution should be higher than the sample level. 4. Stir buffer and sample during analysis with a magnetic stirrer, if possible. 5. Rinse electrodes with distilled water between measurements. B. Single-buffer Calibration 1. Place electrodes (or combination ph electrode and a thermometer) in a buffer solution with a ph value within three ph units of the expected value of the sample. For maximum precision, stir throughout the measurement. 2. Set % SLOPE to 100%. 3. Turn Function Switch to TEMP. 4. Using TEMP ADJ on the rear panel, set the display to the thermometer temperature reading. The meter is now adjusted for temperatures near the set point. If greater accuracy is desired, use the temperature calibration procedure. Calibrate for temperature whenever a new electrode is installed. 5. Turn Function Switch to ph. 6. Using CALIB, set the display to the buffer value at the temperature being measured. (Check buffer packet or bottle for ph value at solution temperature, or see Table 1.) 7. Remove the electrode(s) from the buffer solution and rinse with distilled water. 8. Place the electrode(s) in the unknown sample. Allow reading to stabilize. 9. Read ph value directly from the display. 6 Measurement Procedures
C. Two-buffer Calibration 1. Select two buffers. The first should be a ph 7 buffer (or near ph 7), and the second should be near the expected value of the unknown (e.g., ph 4 or ph 10 buffer). 2. Place electrode(s) and thermometer in a ph 7 buffer. 3. Turn the Function Switch to TEMP. 4. Using the TEMP ADJ on the rear panel set the display to the thermometer temperature reading. If greater accuracy is desired use the temperature calibration procedure. 5. Turn the Function Switch to ph. Using CALIB set the display to the buffer value at the temperature being measured. (Check buffer packet or bottle for ph values at solution temperature, or see Table 1.) 6. Remove electrode(s) from the first buffer and rinse with distilled water. 7. Place electrode(s) in the second buffer solution. 8. Turn % SLOPE until ph value of second buffer at the temperature being measured is displayed. 9. Remove electrode(s) and rinse with distilled water. 10. Place electrode(s) in unknown sample. After reading stabilizes, read ph value. Temperature Measurement A. Temperature Calibration at Two Temperatures Follow the procedure below for determinations where maximum temperature accuracy is desired. 1. The calibration standards must bracket the sample temperature range. To accomplish this, select an aqueous solution and pour it into two beakers. Bring the first solution to 50 C. Bring the second solution to a temperature that will, with the 50 C solution, bracket the expected sample temperatures. For example, use a second temperature of 25 C to temperature standardize for a sample at 35 C. 2. Place electrode(s) into the 50 C solution to a depth of at least 5 cm, and thermometer to its immersion line. 3. Turn the Function Switch to TEMP. Using TEMP ADJ on the rear panel, set the display to the thermometer temperature reading. 4. Place the electrode into the second solution. Measurement Procedures 7
5. Place thermometer into the second solution. After the reading stabilizes use a small screwdriver to adjust TEMP SLOPE on the rear panel until the display reads the second solution s temperature. 6. Place electrode(s) and thermometer back in the 50 C solution, repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 if necessary. 7. Place electrode(s) in a solution whose temperature is near the expected sample temperature. Use TEMP ADJ to set the display to solution temperature. This will minimize temperature errors at the sample measuring temperature. If unable to perform calibration at two temperatures, see Checkout Procedure. 13 B. Use of ph Electrode as a Thermometer To obtain temperature readings using a ph electrode as a thermometer with the Model Calibrate the meter for temperature reading. See Single buffer Calibration, steps 3 and 4, or Temperature Calibration at Two Temperatures for maximum accuracy. 2. During measurement, with the ph electrode in solution, turn the Function Switch to TEMP and read temperature on the display. Dissolved Oxygen Measurement Dissolved oxygen measurements are displayed in ppm O 2 when Thermo Orion Model Dissolved Oxygen Electrode is used with the Model 611 Meter. Follow these instructions for preparing the meter and calibrating the electrode. 1. Connect the BNC connector of the Model to the O 2 input on the rear panel. 2. Turn the Function Switch to O Display should read 7.00 ± Turn the mode switch on the electrode to BT CK. Good battery operation is indicated by a reading of or greater on the meter. 5. Turn the mode switch on the electrode to ZERO. Use the zero calibration control to set the meter to read Insert the reservoir (funnel) into a BOD sample bottle containing enough water to just cover the bottom of the bottle. Insert the electrode, making sure that the electrode tip is not immersed in the water and does not have water droplets clinging to the outside of the membrane. Let stand approximately 30 minutes to ensure water saturation of air in BOD bottle. This bottle should also be used for storage between measurements. 7. Turn the electrode mode switch to the AIR position. If measurements are being made at sea level, use the AIR calibration control to set the ph meter reading to the prevailing barometric pressure in mm Hg (divided by 100). If the barometric pressure is unknown, if the elevation is above sea level, or, if the sample has a salinity greater than 2 parts per thousand, consult Table 1 found in the Model Instruction Manual to obtain the correct AIR setting. 8. Turn electrode mode switch to H 2 O for sample analysis. Measurement Procedures 9
Potentiometric Titrations Potentiometric titrations can be performed using redox electrodes. Directions for titrations using redox electrodes appear in the Thermo Orion Redox Electrode Instruction Manual or in standard analytical chemistry texts. Plot the curve of millivolts of titrant added against observed millivolt readings using standard coordinate graph paper. The point of inflection on the curve is the endpoint. Calculate the normality of the unknown. Polarized Electrode Titrations A 10 microampere polarizing current is available for Karl Fischer or other titrations where polarized platinum electrodes are used: 1. With the Function Switch on mv, connect the accessory shorting strap (Thermo Orion Cat. No ), between INPUT (ph), and one Karl Fischer input jack KF. See Figure Connect one of the platinum electrode jacks to REF (ph) on the rear panel 3. Connect the second platinum electrode jack to the second KF input jack. 4. Place electrodes in the sample solution and perform the titration. 10 Measurement Procedures
Chapter V Use with Strip Chart Recorders The black and red rear panel binding posts provide an output for strip chart recorders. For recorders with input impedance of at least 1 megohm, the recorder output is adjustable to ± 100 mv for a full-scale display of ± 1999 mv Set Up 1. Connect the lead from the negative side of the recorder to the black binding post and the lead from the positive to the red binding post. 2. Proceed according to the instructions in the strip chart recorder instruction manual. If the strip chart recorder is a fixed-input type, use REC ADJ on the rear panel of the Model 611 to adjust the full-scale to conform to that of the recorder. Use with Strip Chart Recorders 11
