4 1 2 Reduced costs. Compared with high-voltage cold cathode lamps (neon, argon, krypton), LED installations are more economical. While cold cathode lamps and the corresponding control gear have to be replaced at least once during the average usage time of 35,000 hours (8 years at 12 hours a day) because of the faster loss of luminous fl ux and higher failure rates, LED installations are virtually maintenance-free. Moreover, thanks to their higher effi ciency and the associated lower energy consumption, LED installations reduce overall costs. Additionally, for lettering and logos backlit with red, orange and yellow light, the investment costs of the system are in most cases already lower than those for neon technology. Resistance to moisture and low temperatures. LED systems from OSRAM can withstand extreme weather conditions. For modules used outdoors within closed illuminated lettering, the best protection against corrosion through salty condensation is provided by a special, transparent protective coating. This is confi rmed by a long-term salt spray test (according to IEC ), which all the OSRAM BACKlight modules have completed successfully. In contrast to cold cathode lamps or fl uorescent tubes, they can be used in a temperature range from -25 C to +75 C and provide constant light even in continuous operation. 4 Saturated colours and optimum illumination. Coloured LEDs produce light with just one wavelength, which is how they achieve their impressive colour saturation and exceptional brightness. Thanks to their small size, OSRAM LED modules can be installed even in narrow lettering, thus avoiding unsightly shadows and borders for absolutely uniform illumination. 4

5 FIVE GOOD REASONS FOR LEDS 3 Simple assembly and installation. LED modules from OSRAM can be easily fi tted in illuminated lettering because of the compact size of the LEDs, their low weight and their fl exible materials. The long BACKlight chains with their fl exible connection cables offer considerable savings in terms of time and therefore costs in installing the modules from the reel. Electrical installation involves just one central power supply for up to 14.4 metres of light. This means there is no need for time-consuming preparation work. The BL-T adhesive base makes things even easier and quicker: just stick it in the open letters and the job is done. Lighting design has never been so easy. OPTOTRONIC control gear together with the LED modules from OSRAM form a perfectly matched system, guaranteeing optimum quality and operating reliability. All system components are developed within OSRAM to ensure optimum compatibility. The system concept goes much further than this though. One OPTOTRONIC OT 50 for example is suffi cient to operate 60 BACKlight modules BL02 or 30 BACKlight modules BL04 (= one reel each), irrespective of the LED light colour. 5 New design. Thanks to their special design, LED modules from OSRAM fi t closely into narrow lettering, sharp angles and tight curves, opening up design opportunities that are impossible with conventional light sources. Thanks to the LEDs low thermal output and wide light beam angle, acrylic covers can be fi t- ted closer to the LEDs themselves. This makes the letters shine brighter and gives them clearer outlines. Playing it safe with SELV. 11 Razor sharp. Illuminated advertising as exemplified by the Yorkdale logotype. The logotypes for the Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto showcase the impressive performance of LED technology. OSRAM BACKlight modules provide homogeneous illumination, a pleasant lighting effect and a reduction in energy consumption by 74 %. Before: the old Yorkdale cold cathode lamp logotype on the front of the 18 metre high glass atrium. OSRAM offers integrated systems with high levels of effi ciency and luminous effi cacy for creative lighting design. The 120 beam angle of the BACKlight modules allows the modules to be positioned close to the cover. This ensures uniform illumination and a thinner contour for the logotype. Based on calculations performed with the LED designer, a total of around 1,000 BACKlight LED modules and 128 OT 50 E IP64 units (each rated at 50 W) were installed. With the LED designer, OSRAM has developed a useful online tool that helps to select the right module and can calculate the quantity of products for a particular LED design. The LED designer was used successfully for example for the Yorkdale logotype. The integrated calculator lists the necessary system units and provides the relevant order data. Lighting design couldn t be easier.
