2 Our special guest is 4-time Emmy winner and former TV anchor, Jan Fox Jan Fox was a school teacher and college professor, who took advantage of an opportunity to host a television show. That was the start of her successful television career, which included twenty years with CBS television. Many people have the same content, so YOU must do something to stand out! The #1 way to get attention for your business is local television! Television is the gorilla of media - still! But you must find out a way to get their attention. Your press kit is a waste of time. 3 The major way to get on television is to prepare and send something that has a direct relationship with the concept you want to present. Send a bag, box or basket! How to Get on Television 1. Start with your local station Watch the shows you want to be on. Especially watch the morning shows. Send segment ideas to the anchors. The anchors tell the producers whom they want on their show. Present yourself in the right light. Local talk shows are always looking for people. Authors are great guests for morning shows! 5. Local shows have reporters assigned to geographical areas and topics. Find the person who covers the topics you focus on. Pitch your segment to them. info@williejolley.com 3

4 6. 7. Local shows have news feeds that go national. Ask the local show to put your segment on the news feed. Say, I have folks in other parts of the country who may want to see me. Use LinkedIn to find producers of television stations. Watch the shows. Send your best TV segments (with the logos of the network station) to the show producers. 8. After you ve completed the interview, use a clipping service to get a recording of your show. 5 Plan a 3-4 Minute Segment It includes: 1. Introduction 2. 7 Questions (that you can be asked) 3. Where to find you 4. Plant a tease (tz) during the interview, so they will ask you back for another interview! Get Attention of the Producer or Anchor The viewer must See It! Touch It! Smell It! 1. Watch several shows 2. 6 Plan How Your Message Gets Delivered to Anchor or Producer 1. Hand delivered by you 2. Special delivery 3. Unusual delivery Think Through Your Segment People get bored quickly! Break down your information into quick sound bites. Train your interviewer! Know your answers - but do not sound memorized. In every answer, there must be a nugget! Nuggets must be: 1. Retweetable - social media ready 2. Retainable - people remember them 3. Returnable - gets you back on the show 4. Repeatable - others tell others info@williejolley.com 6

7 Before the Interview: 1. Prepare, Plan and Practice 2. Ask yourself questions and then record (video) your answers! 3. Rehearse to sound un-rehearsed! Before You Go for the Actual Interview: 1. Watch the show! 2. Ask who is doing the interview. Watch the cadence of that anchor. 3. Notice the kind of chairs they sit in. Sit on the edge of your seat. Look bright eyed and be ready to pounce. Keep your energy up. 7

8 You must work twice as hard to reach your audience on Radio as you would on Television. With television, they can see you! If producers or anchors say no, Just Keep Pitching!
