4 Type of fibre: Single mode Core diameter/cladding are typically 9/125um Typical light source is a 1310nm, 1550 and 1625nm wavelengths LASER, an acronym - Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

5 Loss Mechanism in fibres MACROBENDING Macro bending loses occur when fibres are physically bent beyond the point of critical angle. In general a bend radius < mm is recommended for any standard fibre. Certain Bend Insensitive fibres do however claim to tolerate a bend radius of as little as 5mm. However this may reduce fibre life due to increased stress.

7 Advantages of fibre optics Higher carrying capacity / increased bandwidth. Less signal degradation - longer distances possible without regeneration Smaller size & lighter weight Interference immunity no EMC issue Transmission security - very difficult to tap Non flammable - no electricity, thus no fire hazard Very flexible cables - endoscopes, inspection

8 Disadvantages of fibre optics Cost: a fibre optic solution may sometimes appear expensive compared to a copper solution Termination of fibre cable is more complex and requires special tools and precision / careful workmanship Fibre optic cables are potentially more fragile than coaxial cables, sharp bends could break the fibre Needs more expensive optical transmitters and receivers Cannot carry electrical power
